Next, they build upon these techniques showing how to create distributable AJAX-enabled controls that include rich browser-independent JavaScript client-side functionality. The authors thoroughly explain both the JavaScript and .NET aspects of control development and how these two distinct environments come together to provide a foundation for building a rich user experience using ASP.NET AJAX. 4 Stars is generous, but I don't want to discourage anyone from this useful, though flawed, work. I want to list here several of the negative things, but not to insult the text; rather, I mention them to prepare a reader for reading this worthwhile book.If one wants to understand how ASP.NET profiles, roles, and membership really work, this book is the ticket. This alone makes reading most of it worth the time. But here is what a reader must be prepared for:The main weakness is that the text spans from reteaching JavaScript to implementing a custom internal service application in .NET. That's just too far. In most technical books the last chapters are tack-ons that are inferior; the authors are exhausted and they just have to include the latest technologies in the X.x release edition. This book is the opposite in that the authors seem to have agonized through introductory material until finally, hundreds of pages in, they got to the part they are passionate about. It shows in the writing quality and presentation. In fact, one would do well to read a good book on JavaScript and perhaps another resource on using the MS AJAX Library then start this book on page 121, Part II.Starting yet later would be even better, but the authors dedicated themselves to a parts-before-whole paradigm, so all the pieces of every level of a technology are introduced first, almost to the point where the forest is lost for the trees, then finally the parts are assembled. This makes skipping around nearly impossible. The introductions do attempt to do a little sign-posting, but usually that just confuses, since without knowing the classes discussed these quick intros just go in one ear and out the other--sort of like reading a lineage passage in the Bible without knowing any of the mentioned kings; then, when the classes really are flushed out a little, the reader has to stop and think, "Hold on, did I see this; should I be remembering more about this?"About twenty more well-designed structure diagrams (not like the very few lightweight diagrams that are included) would have improved readability so much! The examples are good but the text review of each always precedes the example. It might just be that I'm to the point that I really do 'read code' to some extent, but code is a lot simpler than paragraph text for this kind of thing, and so I had to skip ahead to the examples, then back to the paragraphs, trying to resist skimming them lest I miss insight I didn't get from the code. The insight was often there; I'm glad to have learned from these capable people, but it was much more work than necessary.I also felt a little bit left-at-the-altar on the inner workings of the MS AJAX Library itself. That's really another book, I suppose, but I felt teased at times. Finally, the AJAX Toolkit from CodePlex is used as the topic for the final chapters. These are fairly high-level views, so there is really no let's-put-it-all-together server control code anywhere in the book. Kothari, for example, leaves us with a smile and a boost of confidence by finishing his server control book with a quality extended example with lots of code. Not so here, unfortunately. All this said, I came away with a much improved understanding of ASP.NET technology, excited about REST and WCF, and rededicated to improving my JavaScript.

Advanced ASP.NET AJAX Server Controls provides you with unique in-depth coverage of AJAX framework. The book is quite different to any other AJAX book on the market. Most AJAX books start with UpdatePanel as a primary mean for developing AJAX-enabled Web pages. This book doesn't cover UpdatePanel at all.UpdatePanel is excellent tool if you are looking for a quick way how to update content of your Web pages without doing full post back. Unfortunately simplicity of UpdatePanel takes a price. Web pages with many UpdatePanels tend to be too large and too slow. Also, UpdatePanel is just a fragment of whole ASP.NET AJAX story. This book gives you the complete story. The book starts with discussion about JavaScript as a backbone of the AJAX framework. First four chapters cover OOP aspects of JavaScript, AJAX extensions to JS language and extremely important component, behavior and control 'classes' that provide all client functionality to AJAX framework. In chapter 5 you finally enter into .NET world. You learn about extenders, controls, localization support and usage of AJAX in partial postback environment (using UpdatePanel). Next two chapters are all about communication. You learn how JavaScript portions of web controls can communicate with Web services (page methods, WCF, ASMX services) and how to extend you controls with authentication role and profile functionality. Last two chapters provide great intro into AJAX Toolkit as a simpler way how to create AJAX-enabled controls. The greatest thing about the book is writing style. It is simple enough to understand even for those ones who have little experience with AJAX or ASP.NET. I'm not ASP.NET developer, but still everything in the book was clear to me. All you need to know is basics of ASP.NET and basics of JavaScript. I strongly recommend you to read JavaScript Definitive Guide that gives you enough knowledge to understand this book. Examples and source codes are simple but still complete and valid even in AJAX 4.0.Advanced ASP.NET AJAX Server Controls provides fantastic in-depth coverage of AJAX framework that every professional ASP.NET developer should know.
