This is mostly a picture book with no descriptions or information on the yants. Thought it might be some sort of reference, but it is not. Photos are OK, but not great. Good to let gather dust on the coffee table.

Although the photos are excellent, I was expecting more text and information than a short preface. I feel slightly cheated, but fortunate to have seen the photos.

The book showed photos. But FAILED to show means behind the tattoo. Anyone can take photos, create a book. But the meanings behind the yant tattoo mean everything. To someone who's interest is getting a tattoo.

Stay Up with Hugo Best: A Novel, by Erin Somers

Review

“A zippy debut…June’s quick wit keeps the banter flowing over a bizarre Memorial Day weekend…the millennial and the magnetic celebrity are surprisingly well suited, two sardonic souls who find themselves connecting…magnificent…a devilishly fun ride.” (Vogue)“On the surface, Somers' debut is light and breezy, but the narrative is deft, controlled, and deadly smart. She mines depths out of Hollywood's propensity to look the other way when beloved men behave badly without a hint of preachiness. Instead, she's interested in complicity... What could be a straightforward novel about a young woman and an older man taking mutual advantage of one another is instead a brilliant study in how rarely we seize opportunities to grow and change for the better—especially if we're lucky enough to get more than one. An outstanding comedic debut about the deeply unfunny trials of growing up in and out of the spotlight. Somers is a writer to watch.” (Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review)“I was honestly surprised to find so many funny one-liners in a novel with the unlikely subject of comedy writing, which is usually a bruising, neurotic enterprise. Erin Somers is a clear-eyed and clever young talent who has mastered the special art of dissection with affection.” (Carl Hiaasen, author of Razor Girl)"Our whole culture desperately needs Stay Up with Hugo Best. A book so relevant, and yet so incredibly funny." (Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story and Lake Success)"Funny, sharp, and very fun. A contemporary story that follows a complex set of characters so self-aware that they become even more vibrant on the page.” (Weike Wang, author of Chemistry)“Stay Up with Hugo Best is sharp, funny, and moving. By the time I finished, I felt like I’d taken a weekend trip to comedian Hugo Best’s mansion myself, taken a dip in his pool, smoked with his son. Erin Somers brilliantly and beautifully captures the life of June Bloom, an ambitious young woman at the point of her career where she feels like anything might happen, and also nothing might, and is driven by curiosity about what’s to come. An extremely winning, relatable, and convincing debut.” (Annie Hartnett, author of Rabbit Cake)"An older man, a younger woman, show biz, nakedness--but wait!  This is the hilarious version with characters so sympathetic you root for them all, even the guy." (Patricia Marx, New Yorker humorist and author of Him Her Him Again the End of Him)"Somers sidesteps the predictable path the reader might expect this weekend to take, instead meandering into subtle, surprising territory. Within the strict temporal boundaries she has set herself, Somers depicts two equally lost souls unable to connect on a deep level. This is a winning debut."  (Publishers Weekly)"A timely comment on sex and power in the entertainment industry... There are some great laugh-out-loud moments and one-liners, and the pace is steady throughout." (Booklist)"Ingenious… With Hugo Best, Somers deftly teases out the muddled and sometimes inappropriate relationship men like him have with fame, aging and the women who get caught in their wake… Somers does a great job balancing June's competing feelings… Somers shines when depicting the little moments between the two, which are funny and poignant... Stay Up with Hugo Best itself never feels unsure: Somers knows exactly when both the laugh lines and the cringes should hit." Loved it! Somers is a smart and exciting new voice.

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review. After reading a number of dark murder mysteries, I wanted to take a break and read something lighthearted and comical. This was definitely not lighthearted, and reviews calling it hilarious had me fearing I was devoid of any sense of humour. To me, it was the opposite of hilarious, being depressing, poignant and full of melancholy, and with uncertain motivations on the part of the leading characters. It was well written, with much to be said about modern sexual politics, but am unsure of the book's aim, or what conclusion I was supposed to draw.June Bloom is a 29-year-old who comes across younger in many ways. Her goal in life is to be a comedian along with the fame it could bring. She was performing stand-up comedy at a dive bar. I got the impression that her goal in comedy is probably futile. I can take vulgar stand-up comedy if it is funny, but the snippets of her routine were just plain vulgar. She seems unfocused, yearns to be a celebrity, but sometimes feels unworthy. At other times she angrily states that she deserves the fame. It is unclear whether she has the talent to achieve her ambitions. She is broke, and not taking productive steps to reach her goal or to find another field of employment. She is merely floating through life. After the open mic show, where many seats were empty and the few in the audience ignoring her routine, she encounters famed celebrity, Hugo Boss. June worked as a writer's assistant for his late night TV show and had a childhood crush on him. She still idolizes him and is in awe of him. Hugo's show has been cancelled, putting them both out of work. Hugo claims to be 65 but is actually a few years older. He seems sad and unexpectedly invites June to his home in Connecticut for the Memorial Day holiday. She accepts, standing up a date with her current boyfriend. There is a lot of sarcasm and complaining in their dialogue, but they gradually seem to build a tentative bond during her time at his luxurious home. June is able to boost his shattered ego caused by his fate as a celebrity has-been. June is impressed by his mansion, his fleet of cars, his staff, and the luxuries she sees that fame can bring. I wasn't able to connect with the flawed characters or the situation. It was not what I expected, but others may enjoy this character-driven story.

This is the most boring, pedantic book I have ever read in my entire life. Oh my god. I got to about 20% on the Kindle and almost threw the small black brick across the room out of frustrated boredom.A writer's assistant loses her job when the late night TV show she helps write for has its last episode. She is resolved to going back to stand up but when she finishes her set at the local Comedy Cellar-esque dump, she finds herself face to face with the host of the now shuttered show, Hugo Best. He invites her to accompany him to his house in the *someplace I don't care about outside of New York City* as a way to pass the time while the reality of the show being over sinks in.Oh jesus the whole first quarter of this book is them talking to each other. CONVERSING. First in the chauffeured car to his house, then at his house. We're treated to a description of an empty fridge with mustard jars that have crusted on caps and an unopened Sodastream in the cabinets. My brain is melting just thinking about it. This mundane bullshit just absolutely misses me by a mile. WHERE IS THE STORY IF I WANTED TO READ DIALOGUE THAT GOES NOWHERE I WOULDN'T BECAUSE I DON'T WASTE MY TIME WITH NON-STORY STORIES.NO. Just...no.

Stay Up with Hugo Best can't help but bring to mind comparisons to other, real-life late night hosts. The world of the rich and famous is shrouded for those of us who have no ties to it, and this book manages to feel like you are getting a bit of an inside peek into the world of a washed-up comedian. That brings about funny, sad, and poignant moments, all helping to remind readers that money cannot necessarily buy happiness, but it can buy a lot of other things.I struggled to feel attached to the main protagonist, June. She's 29 and decides to spend the weekend with Hugo, and it seems she would understand what that implies. However, she often feels like an aloof character, both proclaiming her desire to be successful in the world of comedy, but also bumbling around with no real idea of how to go about that, other than maybe spending the weekend with an aging comedian. Her character felt a little one dimensional and lost at times, which would pull me away from the story. I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

What has June gotten herself into? A lifelong fan of her boss, the comedian Hugo Best, she accepts his impulsive invitation to visit his home in Connecticut and then enters his world in a way she did not expect. This isn't a funny book-it's thoughtful and in many ways quite sad. Hugo's son Spencer, a teen awash in the world, has Hugo nailed and can manipulate him in ways no one else can. June finds herself attracted to Spencer, appalled by some of Hugo's behavior, and totally in his orbit. Things don't happen the way she expected, not at all. Somers has done a nice job with the characters (including Laura, Hugo's manager and Julian, the very needy writer). It's well written and plotted with enough twists that it didn't feel trite. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. A very good read. AND, you might think you know who Hugo is meant to be but it's not.

I was not interested in this book from the start. I really did try to get into it. Maybe it was just not my type of read! Many thanks for the ability to read and review!

A heartfelt thanks to the author for making me smile. Ms Somers wrote a touching, funny, first novel. I can’t wait to read her next book!

Smart, funny, and a great read!

I have been teaching Spanish for 29 years. This is an excellent, basic resource which I use as a supplement to my Spanish 1 and 2 courses for remediation and enrichment. My students seem to gain confidence in their skills and enjoy the new vocabulary presented in the activities. I highly recommend any of the Cynthia Downs titles! For the elementary and middle school level I recommend. Spanish, Grades K - 5: Elementary (Skills for Success). and. Spanish: Middle / High School (Skills for Success)

It does build vocabulary in Spanish for children.

very helpful

I liked this product very much! It covered a great deal of vocabulary instead of the same handful you find in other workbooks.

The Anchor Book of Modern Arabic Fiction, by Denys Johnson-Davies

From Publishers Weekly

This sweeping anthology is as eclectic as the nations it represents. Johnson-Davies, called "the leading Arabic-to-English translator of our time" by Edward Said, collects work from 79 writers across 14 countries. Among those included are Mahmoud Teymour, widely regarded as the father of the Arabic short story; Naguib Mahfouz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature; and Hanan al-Shaykh, a female writer in Arabic whose work in translation has far outsold copies in her native tongue. The quality of these short stories, novellas, and novel excerpts vary, but there are many standouts, including Jabra Ibrahim Jabra's emotionally dynamic excerpt from the novel In Search of Walid Masoud; Nawal El Saadawi's brave treatment of sex, slavery and women; Yusuf Idris's morally resonant excerpt from City of Love and Ashes; and the lyrical entries from Al-Shaykh and Mahfouz. Though some readers might grow tired of the religious piety and conservative thought offered up in most of the work, readers who are interested in dipping into a contemporary literary canon very different from the West's will find this an illuminating resource. An introduction by Johnson-Davies provides a lucid yet brief overview, as do the short biographies preceding each author's work.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. It is a book of short stories by many authors, so it is not suited for your rating system, though the stories are well written. For the most part, the stories relate circumstances which give a picture of people oppressed by governments or mores or poverty and with little relief. It feels despairing.

The West has so little access to Arabic literature, and there are few translations available, except for perhaps a handful of writers. So this incredible collection is a much-welcomed -- and much-needed -- addition to my library. If we want to understand, and connect with, the Arab world, getting a glimpse into the culture is an important step, and this terrific collection goes a long way toward helping with that goal.

A great collection of short passages from recent fiction in the Arab world. A wonderful window into this culture and way of life.

Rather than getting a true sense of each writer, what one gets is a mere glimpse. Most of the entries are just excerpts. And many of those excerpts are a stingy 3-4 pages long. It's like riding in a car and seeing a brief image as you pass by. The editor should have included fewer writers and given them space enough to have their work truly represented. Further, there is no organization that is obvious to my eye. I settle in too briefly with the prescient and modern vision of the Yemeni writer Abdul- Wali (deceased) then jump to the agitated voice of young Yahya Taher Abdullah (also felled before his time) then jump again through the sharp eye of social commentator Abouzeid and over two wisps from other writers before finding the Arabic Saki (Al Amir). Whew! All that in 23 pages. A whirlwind, for certain, but not what I was hoping for. Perhaps a vol 1 and vol 2 would have allowed space for greater inclusiveness without sacrificing content. This anthology is a great idea, but it needs to be re-thought and re-released.

Book in great condition.

I enjoyed this collection and was introduced to a great many writers I'd never heard of before, but I have a major complaint about this collections, and that was that the selections are too short. It would have been better to have half as many writers represented with longer selections. You don't really get a taste for a writer's style in 3-4 pages. This is more like dim sum, little bite-sized packets that whet the appetite but don't fill you up. It's a good idea, but there need to be fewer writers included. That said, I enjoyed these stories and novel excerpts. The range of styles and subject matter is impressive. Normally I'm a reader of science fiction and fantasy, but I like to read literary and contemporary works from time to time for something different. I wish more fantastic works had been included in this collection; one thinks of the collection "The Last Storytellers" from Morocco or Naguib Mahfouz's work "Arabian Nights and Days." The Middle East has a rich imagination, and I would have liked to have seen more djinnis, dancing girls, and arrogant princes included in this collection. Maybe that's another book? If you're looking for short bites from a lot of authors, this is your resource. You'll be exposed to the writing of a great number of writers and can decide whose writing to pursue independently from there. Good luck, and good reading!

This is a very comprehensive collection of modern Arabic language fiction, in English. My only complaint, if it could even be called that, is that some of them are not really short stories but chapters taken from popular novels. That in and of itself is not bad as it can inspire the reader to seek out the novel. The problem is that a couple of them seemed uprooted in that there was not enough background information. Some of these stories are political dealing with wars, partitions and colonialism. One deals with a so called honor killing, another the harshness of desert life, others with forbidden and lost loves, conflict between allegiance to custom and a desire for individual fulfillment. A few were satirical, like the excerpt from Alaa Al Aswany's The Yacoubian Building. This reminded me very much of Nawal El saadawi's Woman at Point Zero. A young woman with pride, principles, and a degree loses several jobs because she refuses to put out. Finally, one of her neighbors sets her straight by telling her to wise up and realize that her degree is useless and that putting out is part of every job, that the smart thing is to learn how to negotiate. What's daunting about this satire is that Saadawi's Woman at Point Zero was written in the 1970s and The Yacoubian Building is was written in the last few years. So, there hasn't been a lot of progress.

I agree with the reviewer who complains that some of the excerpts here are too short. It's impossible to know whether this is due to the publisher or the editor, though. Johnson-Davies' workload included being the translator of several stories in this anthology so one might assume that his workload didn't give him the chance to create a longer anthology or a two-part work. The strengths and characteristic styles of each author generally come through, though, so this book does serve its purpose as a sampler. After reading it, I was able to make a short list of about ten authors that I would like read more of.
