Amazon.com Review

If you don't get home until six or later and still need to get dinner on the table, this is the book for you. The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet pares down ingredients to their simplest and most flavorful form. "Keeping things simple takes the frantic quality--and pressure--out of preparing a meal," says author Nava Atlas. "Simplifying helps you to slow down and enjoy the process of cooking." Atlas devotes a whole chapter to tofu and soy products, including seitan and packaged products like soy "hot dogs" and "sausage." She also has a chapter on "Rudimentary Wraps," which includes recipes for Avocado and Ricotta Soft Tacos, Goat Cheese and Red Pepper Wraps, and the ever popular Black Bean Burrito (spice them with green chiles). Pasta is a quick and easy favorite. Keep jarred sauce on hand and you have the beginnings of Pasta with Triple Red Sauce or Pasta with Olive Sauce. Serve veggie burgers on whole-grain buns with a side of Creamy Coleslaw or Baked Barbecued Tofu and Potato Kebabs for an easy weeknight meal. Or try Asian Sesame-Soy Noodles paired with Broccoli and Tofu in Peanut Sauce. Every recipe includes a nutritional breakdown including calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and sodium. Nearly every recipe has suggestions for what to pair the dish with and on what page to find it. This is an especially handy cookbook for time-crunched families. The food is easy, quick, healthy, and doesn't require great concentration to prepare. --Dana Van Nest

From Publishers Weekly

Vegetarian expert Atlas (Vegetariana and Vegetarian Express) offers a slew of simple, quick recipes, most of which make use of packaged and canned foods. A few unusual soups stand out, such as Rice, Lettuce, and Mushroom Broth, and Cold Curried Cucumber Soup made tangy with a dose of buttermilk. Salads include Chickpea Salad with Roasted Peppers, made with canned chickpeas and jarred red peppers, as well as a more upscale Warm Potato Salad with Goat Cheese. Some recipes, Pinto Beans and Corn, for instance, involve little more than warming up and stirring together the contents of various cans. Although this is not a vegan cookbook, many of its recipes do eschew butter; Ravioli or Tortellini with Sweet Potato Sauce calls for ricotta ravioli, but replaces butter or oil with nonhydrogenated margarine. Each recipe carries a suggested menu Atlas encourages readers to match Mixed Olives Pizza (made with a store-bought crust) with Corn Slaw and nutritional information. A chapter on wraps offers some nice alternatives to sandwiches, such as Eggplant Parmigiana Wraps. Desserts are fruit-based, such as Miniature Fresh Fruit Tarts made with packaged graham cracker pie shells, applesauce and yogurt. Many of Atlas's recipes are already familiar, but will be useful for beginning vegetarians, as well as for those who lead busy lives. 100 b&w illustrations. (June 19) Forecast: The Use-As-Few-Ingredients-as-Possible genre may be reaching saturation, so the title could backfire. On the other hand, Vegetariana sold more than 100,000 copies, and clearly huge numbers of health-conscious people are pressed for time, so this book stands a good chance of finding its niche.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

My wife and I recently decided to try eating a mostly vegetarian diet. This is one of the books we purchased to help guide our new diet. The book is great if you are busy and don't have a lot of time to prepare meals, or shop for groceries. I also really like that she offers pairing options for the meals so you aren't just making one standalone dish. The dishes are often best described as "fresh." However, I do feel that many of the dishes are always missing something. It feels like in an effort to limit the meals to 5 ingredients, you often feel like an additional ingredient or two would really make the dish a lot better. The dishes just feel incomplete. We now use the book as a guide, and try to determine what could be added to each recipe to make it complete.

This book was assigned as a supplemental text for one of my University vegetarian/nutrition classes. What I particularly appreciated was the simplicity of the recipes and the ease of a quick meal. The recipes are easily adaptable and include suggestions that help the novice cook expand his/her culinary repertoire. Now everyone has the time for a freshly prepared basic meal that is also nutritious. I highly recommend this simple book for anyone considering vegetarianism or just a quick meal. All of the students in my class gave an enthusiastic thumbs up.

If you're shopping for a fancy hard cover book, with beautiful photographs of sumptuous meals, this is not the book you are looking for. The only photographs are on the front of the soft cover. It does have many line drawings to illustrate and this does keep down the price of producing the book.Instead, it's a practical and a very helpful guide to preparing a multitude of delicious, simple, and nutritious vegetarian foods. It does make use of dairy products, which is great for me, but many vegetarians don't eat dairy products.I appreciate the way the book starts with suggestions of the many things to stock in your pantry for simple meals. After a few pages of these the author, Nava Atlas, moves on to discuss weekly planning and includes a set of guide sheets that can be copied and designed to write in using categories of products to stock. Such guide sheets might be handy to look over before going shopping - or to take with you.The book contains 250 health promoting, simple to prepare, recipes. There are many - from soups to salads, to main dishes. Besides the recipes, the book speaks on such topics as handling beans and other foods that beginners might not be familiar with. And the last chapter has suggestions for handling fruits.I think I've made a practical choice for my first vegetarian cook book.

Bought this for my husband who pretty much can't cook to save his life. This actually got him excited to start making dinners more. The recipes aren't super creative (what do you expect with 5 ingredients) but even an experienced home chef like myself can use them as a starting-point for customization. Good basic cookbook.

I ordered this shortly after my wedding, hoping to expand the dinner repertoire. My husband and I had fallen into the same old routine because we didn't have a lot of time, and we weren't exactly always eating healthfully. We were looking for a way to eat better and cut down on meat in our diet. This book is so basic and easy, yet the recipes are delicious. Nothing takes a lot of time, and it provides simple ways to add nurtitious foods into your diet. This has also been nice to have on the shelf as many of our friends are vegetarians, and I can easily whip something up for them when they come to dinner now.

I read a review that someone wrote saying "I'm not the most gifted cook around, but this was a little too basic even for me." I have to disagree VEHEMENTLY with that comment. I, too, can cook. But coming up with easy vegetarian dishes with my ultra-busy schedule was so hard before I got this book. I carry this book around with me, and when I don't know what to make for dinner, I just pick a recipe, stop at the store for an ingredient or two that I might not have, and then go home and whip it up. My husband loves these dishes, and he's a carnivore!Sure, there are quesadillas with refried beans that would seem like a no-brainer. But the author always puts an interesting twist on the dish that I wouldn't have thought of myself. And there are a lot of recipes that I would have NEVER thought of myself.5 Ingredients is all I can really handle most week days, so this book is PERFECT for me. I have it with me today and I'm going to try the Green chilie and ricotta rice tonight with one of the quesadilla recipes. Yummy!

I love this book! I have had it for a couple of months now and use it 3-4 times a week, no repeats yet, and I have liked everything I made! My meat-loving husband has liked everything too and that's saying something. True, everything is very simple and you are not going to get complex, truly "gourmet" flavors from these recipes. But if you are like me (someone who loves to eat, but finds cooking boring unless I am in the mood) this book is perfect--everything is really easy, quick, cheap (only 5 ingredients!) and also very colorful and so very visually appealing-- for simple, healthy everyday food I don't think you can really ask for more. You could also easily add in ingredients to make the recipes more interesting-- I have done this successfully several times. I also really like the menu suggestions since I don't always like thinking of what foods go with what.

Most of the text is in a very light font/print. I find it very hard to read. I don't understand this type of a design choice. I will be able to use a lot of the recipes, but don't have experience with tofu, seitan, and the other soy ingredient (can't remember the name right now). Wish I'd seen this at the library before buying a copyl

This is a beautifully written and extremely helpful book for anyone interested in English Transferware. The illustrations are not in color and they are pale. But it is a wonderful book. It is the only book I've found which discusses the lush and beautiful borders on china plates in detail, providing -- with the illustrations -- a vocabulary for describing the various intriguing elements that make up the countless exquisite borders. Many other books don't even mention the borders on transfer ware plates, though the borders are as lovely and as fascinating as the central pictures on the plates. I would so love to see an update of this book with all the illustrations in color. But that may never happen. Meanwhile, it is well worth studying. I've ordered volume II and I am searching for volume III. My deepest thanks to the author for the great care taken in this book. (Maybe some day a devoted collector will provide a study of borders on English china of this period).

I don't know how I have missed owning this book. It is incredible. Wish it was all in color though.

Interesting AH concept, very well developed with absorbing and accurate details of the time and the institutions and people. But above all, the book sings. With emotion and feelings and real poetry, the language sings. That is extraordinarily difficult to accomplish, but here it's done deftly. A book that brings your emotions out. Most highly recommended, and very much looking forward to the next volume.

Lupus has done a very sophisticated book on the 1930's looking at many overlooked opportunities within British naval technologies, British national and local politics, the Spanish Civil War, etc. that converge for a quite different World War II in Europe. Engaging characters, very realistic and plausible plots developing, excellent feel for quite varied times and places, it's a great read and I'm very much looking forward to the next book. I'd have given it 5 stars if the first one wasn't truncated.

Very interesting contrast between the Hood and the Bismark. Well written, but a bit too much deep diving into British political manoeuvring.I did not give it five stars as both part one and part two should have been a single book. There was not a logical stopping point at the end of book one.

A fascinating look about some possible outcomes from a collision between two Royal Navy battlecruisers. This tale goes far beyond the story of HMS Hood, but goes into the Spanish Civil War and efforts to alleviate the Great Depression in a shipyard town in England.

A well written, fast paced style, racing through history. good character development. Disappointed that it ended but looking forward to an "Extra Knot II" which I guarantee you I will buy!

If you think ships have souls, you will love this book. If you like well done alternate history, you will love this book. The author takes a very minor change, a historical event happens slightly differently, and the history starts to change.

Interesting.

I used this in my classroom. My students and I both enjoyed the book.

We're using this book for a home school curriculum. The book does a great job of explaining maps and the artwork is cute, however for a book about maps, they mixed up two states on the United States map (p. 11). Alabama and Mississippi are switched. If you're using this book to teach, just be aware. I went and double checked all the other states that are easy for someone not from that region to mix up (the rectangular states, and maybe N.H. and Vt) and they're correct. A map book should have accurate maps...

Reynard the Fox: A New Translation

Review

“When I read Reynard the Fox for the first time…I instantly knew that Reynard could be enjoyed by everyone over a certain age: the literary pleasures of this work are instantly accessible to all lovers of great narrative…We are all political animals who need to survive, whatever we do. And all of us like laughing. And all of us are fascinated by animals, not least because we are ourselves animals who need to pretend otherwise.” - James Simpson, from the introduction“[Reynard the Fox] is clearly a satire, one that exposes the greed, corruption, and lying that poison institutions and social relations, above all at court…It helps, of course, that this is an animal fable, so what might otherwise seem like pages taken from King Lear or Othello come across as episodes from a "Road Runner" cartoon or an episode of The Itchy & Scratchy Show. Still more, the literary artistry of Reynard the Fox―its pace, its deft twists of plot, its zany characters, and its savage humor―persuades us that to survive in this world it is more important to pretend to be good than actually to be good. To this extent at least, Reynard is the secret twin of his great contemporary Niccolo Machiavelli.” - Stephen Greenblatt from the foreword“Reynard…is one of the defining documents of a vast tradition in Western art, indeed, in Western consciousness: the trickster tale…. [James] Simpson says that his version is the first readily accessible English translation to appear in almost a hundred years. I am glad that he rescued it.” - Joan Acocella, The New Yorker

I was absolutely surprised to find out what a page-turner REYNARD THE FOX is.Here we have mythical animal characters playing out their struggles in a kind of antique vernacular, but involving obviously human issues: power, rebellion, trust, betrayal, gullibility, and of course slyness and scheming. It is like one long Aesop's fable, but with plot twists and turns that make it hard to put down. The author has done a tremendous job in bringing this ancient text to modern readers. Through all the characters, you have the sense of how people lived and thought at the time, and can see that the original was in many ways a great satire of its time.Reynard is wonderfully portrayed as the amoral survivor and, from the way he talks to his few loyal friends and nephews, we get to see how he thinks, how his moral universe works, which mostly boils down to this: fools are to be taken advantage of. Reynard also knows that he is as much the hypocrite as anyone else, and says so, also saying that his only hope is redemption somewhere in the afterlife. This is what I mean by satire -- everyone in the tale explains what they do through piety, in the end. Some caution that the story is occasionally too gory for children, but I would disagree. I don't see this as anything the average 12 year old cannot handle, and the lessons of how much of the world still works today are too valuable to keep from them, if you ask me.One reviewer seems to have gone on a purely academic rant, claiming the translation is some kind of travesty. Well, a translation is a translation -- and is ultimately also an interpretation. Simpson's instinct for interpretation for our times is top-notch. Those who think they have a better one should publish it, and leave the bitter criticism for their small circle who already agree with them. I suspect Simpson has achieved something that they could not.Thank you, Mr. Simpson, for reviving the source of so much legend about this enormously influential character throughout all our folklore. It is a great pleasure to see the origins of timeless stories, and to know that our ancestors understood the world in ways we might have lost.

A tale for our time.

Tricky trickster

Excellent historical research here. The man knows his business. Anything about crafty old Reynard is first-rate here.

A very fun and colorful use of stories and verbal treachery from the 13th century ! Pre dates Machiavelli ! 😈

I own a small anthology of medieval literature which has a small poetic translation of a French poem about Reynard the Fox and it is hilarious. Honestly, the translation is not great shakes, but it does communicate the Wile E. Coyote crazy humor which I assume made the original so popular across Europe.James Simpson has translated a middle English prose version of Reynard the Fox and while he claims he aimed to please the reader, this translation has all pitfalls of awful academic translation. Simpson has not even mastered elementary English composition. Again and again he writes run on sentences full of "thens" then he goes back edits the "thens" out! His prose falls completely flat in a deadened chamber of too much explanation. I will quote a short passage--chosen completely at random--to illustrate the aggravation of reading this incompetent prose. This is Reynard talking:"I've also tricked Isengrim the Wolf more times than I can count. I called him 'uncle', for example, but that was only to deceive him, for he's no kin to me. I made him a monk at Elmare, where I myself also became one. That trick ended up hurting him and profiting me, for I had the bell rope tied to his feet. He so much enjoyed the ringing of the bell that he wished to learn how to do it, for which he ended up having a good deal of grief. He rang so loudly that the folk in the street were afraid of the noise and were puzzled as to what might be in the bell. They arrived before he had a chance to be made a monk and so he was beaten almost to death."I am almost at a loss to begin to explicate the dismality of this passage! The entire passage (as is the entire book) is written in a childish Dr. Suess prose, utterly devoid of any irony or comic effect.. The passage contradicts itself moronically (did you notice the wolf was "made a monk" at the beginning of the paragraph only not the have the "chance to be made a monk" at the end?) Simpson does not even know how to write simple English prose. He writes the wolf "enjoyed the ringing of the bells" which implies the wolf liked to actually pull the ropes to ring the bells. Yet the next clause mentions that the wolf wanted to "learn how to do it" which means Simpson meant to write the wolf "enjoyed hearing the bells ring." (Or to channel my inner English professor, the wolf "enjoyed listening to the ringing of the bells.") And you call the towns people "the folk in the street"??? Can we find a clumsier phrase? The simple prose robs the passage of whatever dynamic feeling it might have and so the reader doesn't imagine a wolf going mad at bell ringing, maybe panicking the townsfolk into thinking an invading army was imminent, and turning into a wolf beating mob--no--you just have a stuffed teddy wolf being beaten senselessly by some faceless "folk in the street."Thanks to the incredibly bad translation, the entire Medieval Age is libeled! Truly, this book was a runaway bestseller on Amazon's list about 1324, and from this translation a reader is left thinking the entire age reveled in strange mean cruelty. This cannot be true, as it is not reflected in anything else I have read from the age, including the poetic excerpt I read of Reynard and it is only Simpson's drecky prose which maligns an entire civilization! IF a epoch could sue in court, Mr. Simpson would be in the dock and found guilty guilty guilty! To make the entire book worse, Simpson occasionally puts on his professorial cap and writes footnotes. One example will suffice. Simpson footnotes a passage "the priest's wife Julocke came with her distaff--she'd been spinning" (and by the by what exactly was Julocke doing with a distaff if she was not spinning? Were good vibrators so rare in the middle ages you used whatever came to hand?) with the moronic note "In Catholic Europe, of course, priests were forbidden to marry. The picture of parish life given here falls far short of the doctrinal ideal." This note has two problems: 1) It is obvious and 2) it completely passes over the complexity of medieval Europe, where the clergy were often not well educated and the celibate priesthood is still a bit of a novelty. (It was only introduced, against a good deal of resistance (duh!) around 1000.)On the bright side, this is a very pretty book with some very nice drawings. I like holding it. The paper is very good.I imagine the editor published this book because she figured Simpson, one of the editors of the infamous Norton Anthology of literature--the one with the microscopic type and tissue thin paper--would be able to insure sales to classes of bored English majors. This book is a travesty.

First published in the 15th century, this book is a parable illustrating animal characters whom portray human traits to convey a philosophical message. It is an animal fable that not only resonated in medieval times, but albeit in today's age of the 21st century, humanity still suffers from age-old human character flaws. The main antagonist of the story is a fox who is cunning, clever and deceitful to the degree of manipulating his "victims," through trickery. He is assisted by a wolf and a lion. All conspire against the protagonists of a dog, cat, hare, badger, cock, bear, rabbit, crow and a ram. The fox blinds the listeners so that his lies are taken for truth. The gradual acceptance of the fox's deception, allows covetousness, falsehood, hatred, envy to extinguish virtues of hope, justice and honestly. This is a beautifully rendered translation and should be read by both adults and children alike. The metaphors are brilliant.

This is the 2nd book to the peculiar children series, the 1st book was a bit "normal" and the ending is where things start to get peculiar. This book is full of all the peculiar children...and adults peculiars I've been waiting for. It is full of action and it is where Jacob starts getting into the full abilities of his abilities though truthfully his full ability does not come out until the last book (its awesome). His love for Emma grows, his relationship with the peculiar children gets stronger and he becomes the "leader" that helps save and rescue them and he kind of takes over for miss peregrine after she disappears. If you read the 1st book and found it interesting but a bit lacking or boring you will not be disappointed with this one because it where the action of them traveling the world (through loops so they don't age forward) in order to stop Carl and save peculiardom. This book is where I just couldn't put it down and stayed up late at night thinking just one more page. You will not be disappointed!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was an excellent first novel. Of course it had its limitations and growing pains of a fledgling book, but I appreciated the new story and unusual gang of characters. There is a sideshow, vaudeville theme combined with creepy photos from history. The main character is dealing with tragedy and new found extraordinary life. Young adults, of a sort, coming of age, of a sort (oooo--mystery), while they travel across South England. These ragamuffins are actually quite endearing. The second book is even quite the improvement on the first gaining it an easy 4.5 stars. This is not a horror story; this is not a pee-your-pants, bone-tingler; this is not for those who wish to shut the book in the freezer. Perhaps for this reason the books have been getting a mix of praise and abysmal reviews. Know what you are reading before you rate it in the trash bin. The book is about a group of teenagers. If you expected it to be anything but a tad bit creepy and chock full of odd, then shame on you.The adventure continues on directly where the last book left off. This beginning is not made to just walk right into; you will need to read the first novel to understand the plight the children find themselves facing. As the story develops, we get to meet even more peculiar children and even a few peculiar animals, and the pacing for the whole plot is quite right. There is a deadline to this story, and we are certainly pushed along (while also getting to enjoy the scenery). The writing develops quite nicely in this sophomore novel as well as the plot. I can really feel this author getting his feet under him.The book abruptly ends as with the first novel. The story itself is wrapped up nicely, but we are then presented with so many new questions. Excellent form of cliffhanger. I look forward to the third novel.

It was also so much more too. Like excitement, adrenaline pumping scenes, and a little fear. Oh, how I liked this story. And more than the first book. This book picks up exactly where Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children left off. Which is a good thing. You are left wondering what happened to them and did they succeed in helping Miss Peregrine. Well, you stop wondering in this one. You get so many more answers than you had questions, but in a good way.I liked this one so much I am reading Library of Souls as soon as I can. Seriously. Then I will watch the film.If you haven't read this series, make sure to start on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. You will get kinda lost if you start on Hollow City. But be sure to read it soon. Probably the most original series I have ever read, and I even have the hubby reading it too.One of a kind reading you can't miss out on!

Set during the 1940 Blitz of London, this second book in the Miss Peregrine series is even better than the first. The first book, while fascinating, relied on the reader's sympathy for its nebbishy protagonist, Jacob Portman, who risks seeming like just another wannabe Holden Caulfield. For those of us who have never been teenage boys, that sympathy was a tad hard to maintain. But the second volume concerns the whole gang of peculiar children, plus other people whom they meet on the road. The first book was delightfully open-ended but somewhat uneven in pace, while the second clicks along briskly from danger to rescue to danger to escape to danger. Riggs always maintains a humane perspective, and doesn't dwell too long on gore. His main problem is that every once in a while, he has to insert a big chunk of background information to keep his story going in the direction he chooses. Sometimes his choices seem arbitrary rather than organic. The theme of "Hollow City" -- resistance against world domination by racist, soul-splitting bad guys -- is not so new or fresh, but Riggs creates an interesting world peopled by sympathetic characters. He is much better at this than Philip Pullman! While suitable for some mature middle-school students, the Miss Peregrine books are grittier and far less comic than the Harry Potter books, and not for young children. As an adult reader, however, I look forward to the third (and final, I hope) volume next month.
