I nearly finish reading the John MacCornick book and I must say it is an excellent written book. Everyone could recommends or excludes some of the algorithms that he describes --values are choices, they aren't properties of the algorithm themselves-- but no one could say that any of them are worthless or with no impact in actual computational systems. The author style approach readers with a moderate level of understanding in computation. That said to remark my astonishing look reading to some Computer Science professional reviewers alleging difficulties understand it. Even to an experience programmer as myself, this book is an enjoyable journey through one of the most fascinating and essential areas of Computer Science: algorithms.(Let me qualify myself. I'm an IT consultant with over 15 years of experience. I have two Microsoft certifications (MCDBA and MCSD, both VB6 and .NET), and a Master degree in Information Science. The discovery, invention and application of algorithms in Object-oriented programs with a dense use of design patterns is one of my lines of investigations.)

An algorithm is a well defined procedure for performing a task. A household example of an algorithm is a recipe -- for example, the list of ingredients together with the sequence of instructions needed to bake a pie. In order for a computer to perform a task, it needs ingredients -- the data -- and instructions -- the algorithm.Author John MacCormick, currently Professor of Computer Science at Dickinson College, has chosen nine important tasks performed by computers and explained the algorithms that are used. In a chapter devoted to each, he explains:* The development of search engines -- how to find information on the internet.* The PageRank process used by Google to produce highly relevant search results.* Public-key cryptography, enabling secure transmission of secret messages -- such as your credit card number -- over open communication channels.* Methods for detecting errors in data transmission and automatically correcting them.* Several pattern recognition techniques, illustrated by classifying handwritten numbers, facial recognition, and decision trees.* Data compression. Storing text, music, and images efficiently.* Databases. Storing and retrieving information efficiently. Techniques for modifying databases reliably, even when computers crash while the modification is in progress.* Digital signatures. How to be certain data is trustworthy.* Deciding what is computable.Even though the techniques that enable these algorithms are complex, Dr. MacCormick explains them in a clear and interesting manner using well constructed examples.I highly recommend this book for a fascinating and easily accessible look at the core of computer science and its application to everyday lives.

If you are already an Expert in any of the 9 Areas explored here. then this is probably not for you. For those who complain that more interesting algorithms are not discussed - the Author does an excellent job explaining his rationale for what he includes and excludes (and I agree with his thesis - it would be hard for me to explain how recursion or shell short changed the world, But public key encryption - not a problem). This explains the fundamental concepts and it does it in a clear way requiring no advanced mathematics etc. and for that I appreciate and applaud this book. I Have read Other explanations of these topic sand have not come aware with a clear an understanding as I obtained from reading this slim Volume. Many authors seem to be obsessed with showing you how clever they are and how well they understand a topic - rather than help you reach the same level of understanding. For this reason I would rate this Volume as Excellent.

I'm a computational biologist and a self-taught programmer, meaning that I'm always looking to improve my knowledge and understanding of computer science (CS) and how to apply it to my research. This book is a great introduction to general algorithms, although I've already encountered most of them in my studies, and the language is a bit too simple for my background. With that being said, I think it's really good for those who are either complete CS newbies, or those who are marginally interested in how the world of computers works without wanting to delve into technical language. I certainly would have gotten interested in CS long before I did if I had read this before college!

An excellent choice of algorithm that made great part of the word that we now live in. The book tries to present these ideas without assuming any programming or mathematical knowledge on part of the reader. As is to be expected, this becomes a bit awkward in the case of asymetric criptography but succeeds amazingly well in other cases. I am using this book for developing an introductory class for computer science and I am very satisfied with the book, because it gives me the material to explain what computer science really is instead of having me dig through the papers myself. The author chose to concentrate just on the algorithms and not on the economiceco-system in which software lives, so there is no real explanation why Altavista did not survive in the top three search engines, forexample. Considering on your view, this is a feature, not a bug. For the general reader, this book suffers from all the advantages and shortcomings of books that try to explain a feature of a science to people without the necessary aparatus. I remember reading a book by - I think - Dirac on quantum physics in high school and not making to much out of it, but as far as the genre goes, this is a really good book.

The Girl Who Fell to Earth: A Memoir, by Sophia Al-Maria

From Booklist

The writer was born in Seattle to an American farm girl and a Bedouin father, and he soon returned to Qatar, where he started a second family. As a young teen, Sophia is on the classic quest to find her father (and herself), and her wry, eloquent narrative does a great job of blending the viewpoints of the 12-year-old then and the adult writer now, while the intersection of contemporary cultures explodes the comfortable stereotypes, old and new. The girl is shocked by backward Bedouin traditions and deep sexual segregation, but she also remembers her American school segregation of jocks, geeks, and freaks, and very clearly by race, and she discovers that love in a culture of arranged marriage and sexual oppression can be “far more complex than anything on MTV.” As the action moves from the Nile delta to Cairo, her commentary gets it exactly right, and without a heavy message. The day was so full of these “exotic” people doing, well, “normal” stuff. Families like hers had the “nouveau” part without the “riche.” Great for reading aloud. --Hazel Rochman

From the Back Cover

When Sophia Al-Maria's mother sends her away from rainy Washington State to stay with her husband's desert-dwelling Bedouin family in Qatar, she intends it to be a sort of teenage cultural boot camp. What her mother doesn't know is that there are some things about growing up that are universal. In Qatar, Sophia is faced with a new world she'd only imagined as a child. She sets out to find her freedom, even in the most unlikely of places. Both family saga and coming-of-age story, The Girl Who Fell to Earth takes readers from the green valleys of the Pacific Northwest to the dunes of the Arabian Gulf and on to the sprawling chaos of Cairo. Struggling to adapt to her nomadic lifestyle, Sophia is haunted by the feeling that she is perpetually in exile: hovering somewhere between two families, two cultures, and two worlds. She must make a place for herself—a complex journey that includes finding young love in the Arabian Gulf, rebellion in Cairo, and, finally, self-discovery in the mountains of Sinai. The Girl Who Fell to Earth heralds the arrival of an electric new talent and takes us on the most personal of quests: the voyage home.

When Sophia Al-Maria's father was a boy his family still lived a traditional Bedouin lifestyle, traveling around the deserts of Qatar and Saudi Arabia and sleeping in tents under skies dark enough to be filled with stars. After being forced by boundary-loving authorities to settle in a gender-segregated family compound her father's wanderlust remained, which is how he ended up in Seattle unable to speak English but still managing to meet and marry an American girl, giving Al-Maria the dual or maybe triple or even quadruple cultural heritage that makes this memoir so mind expandingly and eye openingly interesting.Al-Maria spent part of her childhood in her grandmother's small, isolated house in rural Washington state, where the protective paranoia of her mother made Al-Maria feel more trapped than when she stayed in her father's crowded multi-generational and now stationery home in Qatar. Even though while in Qatar there were substantial cultural and religious restrictions on her ability to move around freely and meet with whomever she wanted, being part of a larger family crowd felt liberating. While she lived in Qatar Al-Maria spent her time getting to know her substantial Bedouin family, attending an international school mainly for foreigners, brawling with her male cousins in the wrong side of their gender divided home because she couldn't stand that being older meant she was no longer able to play Mortal Kombat with them (well, this happened just once), assisting her uncle's carefully choreographed subterfuge as he sneak-courted a non-Bedouin girl unacceptable to their family (which helped her figure out how to spend forbidden time with her boyfriend when she fell in love), and attending rowdy, sexually charged all female parties that seemed to be part of the insular culture of women. Al-Maria also got to experience a little of her traditional Bedouin heritage when the whole family would take off to camp in the desert.Several of Al-Maria's perspectives and insights on hot topics like burka wearing are not what I've encountered anywhere else, and she experienced class divides I knew nothing about. The book presents a fascinating almost disorienting set of interrelated worlds and Al-Maria's vivid energetic writing sweeps the story along, allowing me the deep pleasure of being able to visualize that wide, star-rich desert sky but leaving me hanging a little at the end wondering what she did next. I'm hoping for a follow up book.

Being a Qatari, the book was a bit shocking! The story is fresh and touches the heart, but I'm not convinced of many details that the author highlighted. Her Bedouin Grandma speaks English?! No way! The family was happy to see their son suddenly married to a stranger with two kids? Impossible!Although I can relate to many cultural things she mentioned, I never felt I was immersed in the narrative. Most importantly, I never felt that painful attachment when you finish reading a book, mainly because the end was abrupt and uncreative. You may read it, but don't think of it as your "guide" to the Khaleeji culture, habits or lifestyle. Think of it as the "case study" of Sophia Al-Mariaa and her family because her life is quite unusual.

I felt this was a very interesting and telling tale of a girl struggling to fit into two very different cultures. Living in Qatar, I was able to relate to a bit of what she was experiencing. I found it a very interesting comparison of two very different, yet similar groups of people. One being the Bedu people of Qatar, and the other the "Bedu" (redneck/country) of America. Both have very similar qualities but are worlds apart. We all hear about how rich and extravagant Qatar is, but this book takes you behind the scenes of those Qataris who are barely scrapping by. I do wish the ending had a bit more substance. It felt a bit rushed. I would have liked to know more about her current situation and what happened after Cairo. Also, more of her current relationships between her parents and her Qatari family. The writing style was very good, and it had a nice flow without feeling rushed or unorganized. Overall, I would recommend this book to all memoir readers!

Or perhaps I should say, "an important and beautiful" book.It is important because it tells the tale of growing up between two very different, yet tightly connected, parts of the world. Gulf Arab culture is often stereotyped as either "Rich Oil Baron", "Scheming Terrorist", "Repressed Woman" or "Noble Savage". These cliches are miles away from the truth, which is far more nuanced, detailed and humane. Sadly, such texture gets lost in most contemporary accounts, which can lead to ignorance at best and disastrous misunderstanding at worst.Yet growing up a young person in America is often stereotyped and clichéd, as well. Abercromie and Fitch paint a pretty picture, but the reality of growing up in the States can be far more awkward, anxiety-ridden, and bizarre. "The Girl Who Fell to Earth" brings these two worlds together in a way that is touching, intimate, and true. Both American and Gulf readers would do well by reading this journey of self-discovery and acceptance, which touches on all the most important parts of growing up and experiencing life's many contradictory transitions. It will be particularly resonant for young women growing up in contemporary Gulf society, stretched as they can often be between competing demands and desires. But the book is also beautiful because it does so with humor, tenderness, and bravery. The author does not flinch from sharing some of her most embarrassing moments, yet does so in a way that is relatable and familiar. This is powerful and touching. While the circumstances may be different for each of us, I have no doubt that almost everyone can relate to her tales of growing up and not quite fitting in. It is this very similarity, in worlds that appear so different, that gives this book its power."The Girl Who Fell to Earth" is wonderfully written; I literally couldn't put it down after starting it. I can't recommend it highly enough, but those growing up in or around Gulf / American cultures will find it particularly moving.

"The Voyage of the Dawn treader" may be my favorite book in the "Chronicles of Narnia". Many of the other reviewers have made comparisons, however I see it a little differently. I am reminded of Swift's "Gulliver's travels" and its imagination and satire. Obviously, the Lewis has updated the satire and changed aspects of the story - but both have the same sense of adventure. Another added bonus to "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is the humor. Several of the chapters are very, very funny. The land "of the invisible people" comes to mind as an especially funny section. In truth, Lewis has included all of the ingredients for a fine novel, humor, high adventure, coming of age, and moral decisions. The plot is nicely woven together and doesn't seem to jump as much as "Prince Caspian" and some of the others, so in my opinion "Voyage" may also be the best written of the books in the series.Final tally- Humor "A"Adventure "A"Writing style "B+"Overall - "A" - a very solid read and sure to be one of your child's favorites!

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (text only) by C. S. Lewis,P. Baynes I bought this copy because for one, I personally did not want a "movie tie-in" version, I wanted to have a hardcover edition that contained all of the books in one that I could keep for years and pass down to my children - in short, good quality, tasteful, with pictures. It was described as being "Used - Good", but it arrived in excellent condition (no noticeable tears on the book itself with only slight page wear). This version came with a book jacket which is identical to the hard cover itself, so I threw away the jacket which was well worn. Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon).I feel like I hit the jackpot with this purchase and I highly encourage everyone to get this copy ASAP, because I've noticed the price of the "all-in-one" books skyrocketing lately (Barnes and Noble used to have a "leather"-bound copy for $20 three years ago which is $100 now). I sure hope these books don't go out of print, but if they do, you'll be glad you purchased this particular version, because it'll be passed down the family.

This is a beautiful paperback box set of the Narnia collection, that so many of us grew up with. The covers are nice, thick and protective of the pages inside, which are of good paper stock. I have no print fading or errors that I've noticed. The art on the outter box is beautiful on all sides, with a little read up at the top. For paperbacks, I believe this is the way to go! Highly recommended!

This is a really lovely storybook collection based on all seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Those include: “The Magician's Nephew”, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair”, and “The Last Battle”. As the coloring book is slightly longer than average size and there are seven books covered, each is only touched on lightly. The coloring book can be used as an fun addition while you are reading the stories but it does not replace them. The designs are based on the original artwork by Pauline Baynes from the books written and published in the 1950's. In some cases, the artwork has been turned into what I call “wallpaper” style designs with repeated patterns. The designs include considerably more black in shading than usual for coloring books. That is because the original artwork was just that – artwork and not coloring designs. I've found that utilizing the black as shading is what works best for me with this type of design. I've run across it before when original artwork has been presented in this format. On a personal note, the designs bring back memories from my own life. I was a big fan of these books as a child and I would read them over and over again. Once I had children, I would read books to them before bedtime each night and this was a favorite, especially of my late son. He also would read the books over and over again on his own.I am now looking forward to reading them to my grandchildren and I will now also have a book of designs that I have colored to go along with them. I will admit that coloring these designs is a bittersweet experience as I spend as much time thinking of my son as I do in coloring. This is what I found as I colored in this book and tested the paper with my coloring medium. I'll include a list of my coloring medium, which I use for tests and for coloring, in the comments section below.96 pages of Designs based on original artwork from “The Chronicles of Narnia”Printed on both sides of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth and non-perforatedGlue BoundMany Designs merge into the binding areaSome designs spread across two pages with integral parts merging into the binding areaAlcohol-based markers bleed through this paperWater-based markers, gel pens, and India ink pens do not bleed through the page.Colored pencils worked well with the paper. I was able to get good color with multiple layers of the same shade. I was also able to layer multiple colors and blend well using a pencil style blending stick. Both oil and wax based pencils worked well.

Love these books, but the font size is much too small on the Narnia Box Set (with movie pictures on box, linked below). It is advertised as for Grade 3 and up, but likely only Jr. High and older would be comfortable with this small of a Font Size. We are surprised that Harper Collins would publish such a small text Font Size, knowing that many children would be their audience.***It would be very helpful if Amazon would include the Font Size in the product description for books and other literature.*** (Surprised that they don't already include this.)Chronicles of Narnia Box SetWe are sending this box set back regrettably, and instead ordering this 2000-published box set, which is a couple inches taller, hoping it has an adequate font size for young readers (link below). It costs $8 more, but should hopefully be the solution we need for the too-small font. The Chronicles of Narnia Box Set: Full-Color Collector's Edition

WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS COPY. I ordered this book to read more on Engels' philosophy and, first of all, the publishing is atrocious. Pages are not numbered and the book looks like it was printed on computer paper from Microsoft Word. But here's the kicker: right in the middle of the book is a 12 page fundamentalist and homophobic christian pamphlet titled "The Marriage Bed - Can the Marriage Bed be Defiled?" In this excerpt (which Amazon did manage to number the pages!), the author goes on and on about "fornication", "unnatural acts", and even compares "sodimites" (referring to LGBTQ people) to dogs. Shame on you Amazon. One purchases a book with the reasonable expectation that you are receiving just that product, not an anti-gay pamphlet literally printed within the book. This is doubly offensive because I am a gay man. I will avoid Amazon's in-house publishing from here on out and stick with more reputable publishers.

This little book is the most concise summary of the ideas of Socialism that I have found so far. Engels does a brilliant job in laying out an outline of the evolution of capitalism from feudalism through the guild system to the industrial revolution. He also describes the evolution of thought as practiced by the Ancient Greeks into the dialectic of Hegel, which made thinking about processes and change possible and, consequently, the evolution of Socialist theory. The burning question in my mind with regard to Socialist theory has been, "How exactly will social ownership and control of the means of production create a fairer distribution of wealth and capital?" Unfortunately, this question remains unanswered. Control of capital cannot in and of itself provide the knowledge of the behavior of markets necessary to predict and control them for the good of all. The recent failure of the Federal Reserve and other worldwide central banking, using interest rates, to control the inevitable boom-and-bust economic cycles points up this flaw in capitalism, and no Socialist answer appears in this book either.

Engels provides a history of Socialism before Marx explaining the groundwork set out by the likes of Saint Simon & Robert Owen and the push of a more scientific form of socialism spearheaded by Marx. This book is basically a call to us and future generations not to deify Marx & Engels but to learn from them and their predecessors & to look at today in order make a new socialism, one that would benefit our needs and desires & the needs & desires of nature.

Excellent seller! The book also provides informative insight into what socialism really is. I highly recommend this to anybody with a philosophical mind!It will only strengthen your knowledge of the human condition, and broaden your understanding of Social democracy.

Or if you’re already a Socialist this a highly recommended read.If you rather listen to the audiobook then LibriVox has it for free.

This particular print of Engels's work is riddled with typos. Marx and Engels are both very influential thinkers of the 19th Century and I feel these typos serve a disservice to the Engels's work. I liked the substance of the book but the typos were annoying.

Classic. For everybody who wants to change the world.

Rescued is the 17th Andy Carpenter mystery and another winner for sure. Even though it’s a mystery, there is laugh out loud humor throughout this imaginative book. I have read and loved all the books in the series but I’m sure you can jump right into this one and have an enjoyable read. Loved it.

Reading an Andy Carpenter Mystery is a lot like eating a box of delicious chocolates. You tell yourself to go slow, and to savior. Butbefore you know it, you have lost all control, and are gobbling the chocolates with both hands. This is a good read: all my favoritecharacters are present:Andy, Laurie, Hike, Sam, Edna, Marcus, Willie, Pete, Vince, and the Bubalah Brigade. And of course, for Wagsthere is Tara and Sebastian and sixty-one assorted rescues.

I just love the Andy Carpenter books. I would like if one came out a week! No pressure!! The characters are so life like. And the stories are interesting and complex. Being from New Jersey, I identify with the venues and with the excellent narrator’s accent. Not that you have to be from New Jersey to enjoy the books; but it brings another element for me.

I love the Andy Carpenter series, and drag my reading through the books because I hate to have them end. This story was really exciting, with a complicated plot made up of several threads which Mr. Rosenfelt wove together in an intricate and wonderful story. It's so much fun seeing the characters again. Only complaint: Can't the books be longer??

I love all the characters and I've really become invested in them. As soon as I see a new one released, I buy it and read it the same day! Then I pray that David is working hard to ring us the next one. I highly recommend it!

I loved "Rescued" -- Andy Carpenter is a great protagonist and David Rosenfelt has set up another "whodunit" with Andy rescuing the dogs and finding the bad guys. I love the characters in this series and Rescued delivers another set of great characters, some returning from the previous books (I love the Bubalah Brigade) and some (especially the bad guys) new to this story. Well worth the read!

Perfect combination - intrigue and humor! Mr. Rosenfelt is an expert weaver of characters committing crime and our favorite sleuths to solve it. I have read most of his books and each is a very enjoyable read without the nightmarish scenarios. And I am sure his favorite pooches help unlock the mystery during their walks. Enjoy!

I have read most of the Andy Carpenter series and have really enjoyed, them, especially as I come from the area in which these stories take place. I especially enjoyed this one, just a really good read, kept my interest throughout. I also listened to the audiobook, which was great with the talent of Grover Gardner. Definitely recommend this book!
