Superb writing, essays on nature that are inspiring, moving, thought provoking and stylistically graceful, integrative, honest, and an island of wonderful writing and thinking. Rare and much welcomed. I am reading all of Quammen's books of essays and am already anxiously anticipating major grief when I reach the end of the lot. Perhaps I shall have to simply start reading them all over again!

This collection was recommended to me by a university instructor and author. I was very confused for the first half of the collection and due to some excellent writing I was totally confused by the end. There are several selections that do not seem to fit however all are extremely well written and insightful. Each selection taken by itself is thought provoking and complete. By that I mean that they have a beginning and easily conclude. Do not cause yourself the brain damage I encountered by trying to tie them together. Enjoy them as individuals and the writing that flows as if it were understandable poetry.

Thoughtful compendium of science and philosophical essays. As I understand it these come from Outside Magazine and maybe other published sources. Well written and easy to read. If you have read These before then take a pass. If not, enjoy.

David Quammen's collections of essays and longer work are all equally fine non-fiction pieces. He compares favorably to some of the very best non-fiction voices—John McPhee comes to mind.A slight warning, though. Quammen is slightly pessimistic in his view of mankind's impact on global ecology. His message can be a little discouraging on occasion.

Quammen has proved once again why is one of my very favorite authors; he covers a wide variety of natural history topics (all interesting) with humor and clarity

You’re probably wondering why a man is reviewing a book that was so clearly written for women. For starters, you’re not the boss of me. Secondly, body positivity is universal. If you’ve ever been given a sideways look while eating in public, had a complete stranger offer advice on how to “fix” you, or skipped a school function because you’re afraid of how your size will deflect ridicule to your child; you’re in this group, and this book is for you. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s why EVERYONE should read this book; men, women or otherwise. I flipped to the first page expecting all the things I have come to appreciate from reading Brittany’s blog, following her social media posts, and meeting her in person: willful irreverence, period-specific pop culture references, and slightly cringe-worthy discussions of the hornet’s nest that is the female existence (read: periods, boob sweat, and the like). And I got it. I got all the hilarious, foul-mouthed, sexy, movie reference-fueled perspectives and narratives that I was hoping for in a Brittany Gibbons book. As a fan, I’d have been satisfied with that. What I didn’t expect was a series of life stories, experiences, and supremely human moments, all of them told with such a stark honesty that I found myself tearing up on a crowded airplane wondering what the hell was happening with this “comedy” book I was reading. Reading Fat Girl Walking as a man is like spying on all girls sleepover; not the adolescent fantasy replete with baby doll nighties and pillow fights, but the real, raw, unguarded emotion that only women communing with women feel comfortable sharing. This book will shock you. Not in the normal boring, “did she really just say that” kind of way, but in the devastating frankness and transparency Brittany shows in the recounting of her life experiences, her rise to “internet famous”, and the long hard road behind her as she defined and refined her message into becoming the resounding voice, smirking face and gorgeous body at the front of this movement This book will make you cry. There are moments of such humanity and realness that the only response that feels natural is a physical one. Brittany weaves these between humor and levity in a way that never lets you fall too far. I found myself cheering for her and screaming at her as she fumbled through the missteps of her youth and early adulthood as they resonated a little too close to home. Eventually landing right where she belongs, and lighting the path for those behind her. Maybe, just maybe, this book will inspire you. I feel like I was inspired by Fat Girl Walking as a byproduct. If someone tells me a book is inspirational, I immediately reject it as drivel or something conjured by a distant PhD or B-list celeb that wants a summer home. Brittany set out to tell a story, in her inimitable voice, and entertain the hell out of anyone lucky enough to pick up a copy. This book is inspirational, but I don’t think it meant to be. Sometimes the fat girl gets cast as the funny friend, and ends up being the star.

This book was FUN. I've been heavy and I've been unhealthily thin, but have managed to find a comfortable, healthy life in the middle. Most importantly, I feel comfortable in my skin. A lot of women have not found that, though, and between hilarious outtakes from her life, Brittany Gibbons tells how she found a life in which she's happy just "being". Not the grand quest to change, or the promise of being happier "just if", but loving yourself and your life right now. It's a powerful story. And hilarious. I'm glad I read this book.

If you read nothing else, I implore you to get Fat Girl Walking by the great Brittany Gibbons. There's a reason she's a writer and I'm not because I can't even form the words to tell you how good this book is. I laughed. I cried. I shouted me too! repeatedly. Trust me when I tell you the only disappointment you'll feel upon finishing it is that her next book isn't out yet.

This was a v.ery relatable book for this plus sized woman. I guess I should have grasped the idea that she listed sex first in the title because it was that important to her. A bit too raunchy, detailed, and crass for my taste. Her description of being "curvy" was extremely relatable and I would recommend it for anyone who grew up in the 80s or 90s.

I love Brittany’s writing style. She’s witty, funny, smart, relatable, and it’s reasuring and some how validating when someone else’s life so closely mirrors your own and the humor you heard in your head comes out on her pages. Definitely a must read for the plus sized. It was finished way too soon, inspired binge-reading and then I had to go buy her first book!

Awesome memoir! I love the author's relaxed and friendly writing style. It makes me feel like I know her personally. We learn about Brittany Gibbon's childhood, her struggles with weight and social life. She recounts her time in college and her relationship with her then-boyfriend now husband Andy. She also recounts her time having three children and her ever changing body. Throughout the memoir, she extols the importance of body love and acceptance. She is brave and happy and makes you want to be like that too. I'm on my second time reading it, it's that good!

What can I say. From one fat girl to another.... I LOVE Brittany Gibbons. We have similar personalities. I absolutely love the way she looks at the obstacles in her life and has overcome them. If you aren't afraid or *gasp* offended by someone who cusses a little bit, tells it like it is, and are a "Fat Girl Walking" or even if you're a Skinny Girl Walking.... you'll want to read this book. You'll definitely laugh and I'm almost positive you'll relate to a few obstacles she's been through in her life.

Infinitely relatable and incredibly entertaining. I wasn't sure how much this book would apply to me as I am smack dab in the middle of the size range, a few sizes from plus but also several from small. Ms. Gibbons makes excellent points about body acceptance while refusing to cut down anyone of any body type. I downloaded this book based upon a review written by a man and I completely understand now why he enjoyed it so much. This is a book for everyone: small, big, male, female, and anywhere in between.

JEAN CARROON, FAIA, LEED AP, leads Goody Clancy's highly regarded preservation practice, based in Boston. She has earned national recognition for her expertise in applying sustainable-design technology to historic buildings, including more than a dozen National Historic Landmarks. She has directed the adaptive reuse and preservation of signature buildings in a broad range of sectors, including educational, civic, and cultural projects for clients such as Harvard University and the National Park Service. Carroon has been overseeing renovation of more than fifty historic structures on the St. Elizabeth's West Campus in Washington, D.C., which will become the home of the Department of Homeland Security. A member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Sustainability Coalition and the Advisory Group of the AIA Historic Resources Committee, she helped draft the Pocantico Proclamation on Sustainability and Historic Preservation.

While there is a ton of popular press (National Trust, for one) about the connections between preservation and sustainability, and there's a good number of factual studies, there isn't a lot that strikes the balance between the two -- what you need to know about these two inter-related fields to practically apply the information to your professional life. This is a worthwhile read for those in CRM, preservationists, engineers, architects, building scientists, and students of all those fields (and probably a few more). If we are not sustainable, we soon just will not be.It's also incredibly readable for a textbook. Carroon's writing is never dry.

Jean Carroon has hit the right note with her timely book. She helps those of us in the world of preservation and sustainable design thread the not always easy path between the regulatory conflicts inherent in two areas of practice which often are at odds. Her writing is clear and convincing and will be of value to the profession and the public. A whole new book with more examples and more narratives of conflict resolution is called for as the recent years have seen so many noble attempts to not only "beat the drum" but also to "go to the mat" for best practices in this complex game for owners, architects and regulators.

This wasn't for me but some fellow employees. They found this book to be very informative and helpful. They really enjoyed it.

I bought this for my mother years ago, thinking it would be a good way to get her to talk about her life. It really worked, and I filled out the book for my sons. Now I have my first grand daughter, and I bought it again. I love almost everything about it, but I am noticing that women's work is ignored. The statement is My father worked at, but there is no mention of what work mother did/ does. In today's world, it is pretty unusual that only the dad works.

This was a gift for my mom for Mother's Day. Her mom filled out a similar book, and I wanted to give my mom the same opportunity.The quality of the book is nice. There is a lot included in the book that is interesting (wedding day, childhood, etc. that are fun to look back on for children and grandchildren). It was a great chance to record memories for herself and the rest of the family. I wish there was more space to write about these fun moments though. There are only a couple of lines for a lot of these milestones, which doesn't leave a lot of room to reflect.Despite that, I would recommend this book for mothers and grandmothers. It's probably more ideal for older moms who can write about their grown children. Either way, there is nothing cooler than having something for family to savor.

I wanted a good quality book to stand up for years to come. I received the Grandmother Remembers: A Written Heirloom in the 1980's for a Grandchild, and found it very well made and laid out very nicely. It is easy to write on good quality paper. It begins sentences and that was helpful to me. Blank pages would give more room but not provide interesting questions to prompt memories. I am buying four more today for grandchildren who are young adults now.

I purchased 2 of these for Christmas for my mom and mother-in-law to complete for my daughter. I have an older version that my grandmother did for me over the course of several years and now that she's gone, it's one of my most prized possessions. I look forward to my daughter getting to know her grandmothers through these pages.

I looked at several of these books, and liked the questions and layout of this one best. I ordered this one for my grandmother, however, I ordered the "Grandparent's Legacy" for my parents (soon to be grandparents). The "Grandparent's Legacy" is a lot nicer and looks much higher quality. I really like the layout, and it is a lot more in depth than most. But, that one might be a little too lengthy or in depth for an older grandparent. "Grandmother Remembers" is shorter, simple, and to the point. With my 90 year old granny's failing eyesight and health, I felt it was a more appropriate book. For someone who is still capable of filling out the journal style layout of the "Granparent's Legacy" book, it is definately the way to go and comprable in cost. I feel you get much more for the money.

I have given this particular book as gifts many times. I first bought 2 of these books for my mom to "remember" her history for my niece and nephew. She did not get to finish her memoirs before she passed away but she did leave a wealth of notes and photos. The book is so nicely laid out that rereading her entries bring her back as if she were telling the stories. I just gave 2 more of these books to a friend who is thrilled to give them to her mother and mother inlaw. Just give the wonderful grandmas enough time to write, rewrite - their memories are family treasures.
