The story is more than interesting, but at times I felt the authors got bogged down in meaningless detail (do readers really have to know every street address of every character?), and the way narratives describing individuals in the book were embedded in stories-within-stories was, at times, confusing. I frequently lost track of characters. About half-way through I definitely thought it a three star book. Three things changed my mind: the remarkable (and remarkably written) final paragraph, which sent me a shock of recognition of the implications of the tale, the final pages, which placed the tale in context, and the afterward to the second edition, which describes the art of doing and writing history so well.

This was a fun read! I enjoyed learning about this small occult that formed and disbanded. This book provides the narrative of someone suffering from severe mental illness who begins to believe he is God. Intertwined throughout​ the narrative are themes of slavery and the role of women in society.

Although I am an academic with expertise in the Second Great Awakening and Early National Period of US history, I had never heard of the Prophet Matthias until a colleague suggested I read this book. "The Kingdom of Matthias" by Paul Johnson and Sean Wilentz is an extraordinary study in what happens when enthusiastic religion and mental illness combine in one individual to tip him and his followers over into the unhealthiness of a personality cult.The Prophet Matthias stands in a long line of deeply eccentric American religious figures whose stories are compelling and frightening, yet who remain on the fringe of American religious history. He is David Koresh without an explosive encounter with BATF, a cult leader who demanded that his followers submit to him in every segment of their existence, including sexually.But perhaps the most important and powerful story in this book is the story of his most devoted and loyal follower, who went on to play a significant role in US history in her own right. I decline to reveal her identity in this review because if the reader knows who she was, it will dramatically dilute the book's final paragraph and, ultimately, its full impact. Suffice it to say that you will never look at her the same way again after reading this book.I'm seriously considering assigning this book to my undergraduate students in "Christianity in America" this fall. It is very readable, very provocative, and will make you think about the issues it raises long after you have finished reading it.

This book had me hooked from the start. Although at times it reads like a soap opera it tells the true story of Robert Matthews also know the the prophet Matthias. Although a highly researched history book it captures the excitement of a major hollywood film. Johnson and Wilentz manage to weave the sotry in a manner that flows perfectly and tells detail by detail how Robert Matthews became the prophet Matthias and the subsequent fall of his kingdom. This book painst a vivid picture of the conditions that Americans lived through in the second great awakening.For many Americans who felt left out by the rapid transformation of the era men with ideas like Matthews seemed to merit some consideration. For a populace that was rapidly shifting from a localistic and agrarian way of life to an urban market driven one Matthews' ideas of hyper paternalism were attractive.I reccomend this book to anybody not just people interested in history. It brings together religion and history in a very exciting and enjoyable way.

I bought this to read about Sojourner Truth's role in the Kingdom of Matthias. But it sets out the whole story of that scandal. It reads like a novel!

I am a student of American History and Religious Studies. This book was fantastic, the Historians who researched and wrote this did a fantastic job. An awesome surprise awaits at the end of this book!One of my History Prof. recommended this book to me. You don't need to be a student to enjoy this book. It is a great, easy, short read.

I would first like to say that this was a required reader for me for my US history class, but so far, I'm a little over 1/4 way through it and I actually enjoy it. Had it not been required, and someone gave me an overview of it, and I actually read it, I would still enjoy it. I would recommend this book even if it's not a required reader. It's very interesting. Excellent descriptions of the lives of the people in this group/cult. I am excited to finish reading it here soon.

Not only is this book well written, it is written on a very interesting NRM. One of my favorite subjects in Religious Studies are the NRMs out of the Second Great Awakening and The Kingdom of Matthias is one of the most obscure and interesting. I would definitely recommend this book for a good, fun pleasure read, or as a classroom book in a Religious Studies class about the Second Great Awakening or New Religious Movements. Honestly, this is a book that was hard for me to put down. The authors did a great job of making the story interesting.

I am having bad luck finding epic romance, I had hope with this book, but, alas it was not to be. I did not like Kate, at all, I did not feel any true love between the characters, at some point I thought we'd get that feeling, but it did not happen, perhaps it was the subject matter, the royal intrique or perhaps it was the Tudor period, seldom a favorite of mine. Robert's character and story never fully developed we never got a full sence of him, we understood his home in the Highlands meant everything to him, but we got barely a taste of why it was his sanctuary or his holy ground as it were. Kate was her mothers daughter, and it took more from her character develpment rather than enhance it. I can't recomend this book, it just did not have enouh heart, it did not make feel....

Half Spanish and experienced in their tortures as well as their pleasures, he'd been a pirate and had incurred both the praise and anger of Queen Elizabeth, who has now seized him for another assignment: The Queen wants him to wed Kathryn Kentyre who, he is told, is Queen Mary's illegitimate daughter.Kathryn ("Kate"), now 16, has been raised in seclusion by a vicar who is going insane and beats her. This wasn't a favorite of mine and I don't really read it anymore.....but it was enjoyable while reading.When Princess Kathryn Kentyre is snatched from a life of captivity by the mysterious Black Robert of Craighdhu, she is torn between absolute terror and soaring hope. He had been chosen to protect her from the dangers surrounding her, yet the moment he swept her away she knew this rogue of a Scottish laird would prove a greater threat than any she faced from her enemies.Sensuous as sin itself and wild as his native Scottish Highlands, Robert MacDarren had no intention of settling down with one woman. Yet the agreement he'd struck to keep the peace required he marry the orphaned beauty and bring her back to his castle at Craighdhu for safekeeping. It was to be a marriage in name only—and only for one year. He never suspected that the meek hostage he had been promised would prove to be this firebrand of a woman who would challenge his mind, arouse his passion, and lay siege to his heart.

The story told in this novel was of love and sacrifice. It helped me to better understand the meaning of real love! Love for God and love for family!

Really enjoyed the book. Was stuck in an airport and read reviews and decided to start reading it. Found it very enjoyable and pretty much read the entire book in one day. This was my first book of this author. I may try reading another one of her books soon.

I don't know any other author but Iris Johansen who can write a steamy romance where well-known figures in history (this time Queen Elisabeth, Mary Stuart) play an active part and the story still sounds believable. How does she do it? I liked everything about this book. And the same goes for her books called Wind Dancer/Storm Winds. I definitely recommend these if you like history and romance.

I am an avid historical romance reader, and have probably read hundreds over the years. I must say that this is one of my top 5 favorite novels. I have read and re-read this book multiple times, and will probably read it again in the future. With a few misses, in general, Iris Johansen in my opinion is a fantastic writer. I have read almost all her books, and this is my favorite. Fantastic story, amazing heroine and hero, nice side characters, satisfying ending, just a wonderful book that I would highly recommend.

Queen Elizabeth forced Robert to marry a redheaded termagant named Kate. With her he took on the job of keeping the secret of Kate's birth from King James. Robert knew Kate was a danger to his beloved Scottish fortress. She was a time bomb waiting to go off if anyone found out who she was, Queen Mary's iligitament daughter. Or at least that is what Elizabeth has intamated. And what her guardian believes and goes to James with his so called proof.. James set the hounds after Robert and Kate only to have them turn on him. After all why settle for helping James be King when he could take Kate and gain both Scotland and England with what he found.But he had not counted on Kate and Robert falling in love and fighting back.

Every since learning of this book I have been looking forward to read it simply because it involved traveling in Yemen, a country that has a long and interesting history and is a place that is not accessible to much of the world's citizens currently. Having had the opportunity to visit Sana'a, Yemen for a week in 2009, and knowing that it was a rare and unique experience that I will not have again for a long time, I have become interested in what the country is like outside of Sana'a. Reading the news lately, it really seems like it is the "wild west" out there. I can only imagine what it is truly like.Eric Hansen's book reveals so much of the culture of life in Yemen in the late 20th century, and I am truly grateful to him for this gift of wisdom. Plus, what an adventure. He went through many wonderful travel dreams that many of us have thought of, but in reality they are probably just as dangerous or even more so than what happened to Hansen during his first trip to Yemen. I still focus on his description of the beauty of living in solitude after the shipwreck with his companions and, for a certain time, being free from the constraints and expectations of the outside world. How many of us have not dreamed of spending some time on a deserted island?What also resonated with me was the basis of his return to Yemen ten years after the shipwreck. Ever since reading "Into the Wild", I learned of the possible utility of burying valuables and coming back for them later. This was beneficial and successful for McCandless, but for Hansen it turned in to a adventure that by necessity gained him access to the colorful spectrum of Yemeni culture that could only be experienced by a "Westerner" years ago, and even then it was fraught with difficulty.This was the second book I have read by Hansen and I am truly impressed and fulfilled by the way he creates the narrative. This book is a beautiful and brilliantly unique journey and it was amazing to experience it through his eyes, ears and spirit.

"Khat ... also known as qat, gat, chat, and miraa ... is a flowering plant native to tropical East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula... Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant which causes excitement and euphoria... Traditionally, khat has been used as a socializing drug, and this is still very much the case in Yemen where khat-chewing is predominantly, although not exclusively, a male habit... Khat consumption induces mild euphoria and excitement. Individuals become very talkative under the influence of the drug and may appear to be unrealistic and emotionally unstable. Khat can induce manic behaviors and hyperactivity... Here in MOTORING WITH MOHAMMED, accomplished travel writer Eric Hansen immerses the reader in North Yemen. (Where, you say?) North Yemen squatted next to the Red Sea just to the south of southwest Saudi Arabia, and joined with South Yemen in 1990 to become the Republic of Yemen.Hansen's narrative is served up in two parts. Well, three, actually. The first takes place in 1978 when, after a 7-year period of wandering in other backwaters, the author is shipwrecked in the yacht "Clea", on which he was part of a five-person crew, on the uninhabited North Yemen island of Uqban. The first four chapters describe this experience, during which, for safekeeping, he buried on the island the wrapped journals of his previous adventures. The trouble is, he forgot to take them along when he and his companions were eventually rescued after fourteen days.The book's second part - thirteen chapters - takes place during a ten-week period a decade later when Hansen returns to North Yemen to retrieve his cached journals. Unbeknownst to him, however, is that Uqban Island lay in a security zone virtually inaccessible to foreigners. This fact becomes frustratingly clear as he unsuccessfully conspires with local help to cross the twenty miles of water separating the mainland from the island. Meanwhile, he cools his heels exploring, and falling in love with, much of the rest of the country. It's this developing love affair with North Yemen that's the basis for most of MOTORING WITH MOHAMMED.Whether he's tiptoeing across a precarious slope in the interior mountains, or witnessing the execution of a murderer, or participating in a communal qat chew, or sweating in a bathhouse, or feasting on stewed sheep's heads, Eric has a talent for observing the details that enrich the subsequent tale:"There is a trick to cracking open the skulls. I never gave much thought to or knew much about Yemen but, thanks to Hansen, I have a new and positive view of it. His willingness to get out and experience many facets of this country enriches his descriptions. His good humor and sensitivity to its people are gratifying. But this is more than just a travelogue. Hansen's quest for his buried notebooks is a compelling story in itself. That plot and this venue combine to make this an irresistible and meritorious book. I look forward to reading more from this intrepid and gifted writer.

I read this book nearly at one sitting, literally sitting, up in bed one night when I should have been sleeping. Four or five times I awakened my husband, shaking the bed with my laughter, especially when Mohammed moved a sheep into the back seat of his taxi for the next five days, saying, "The sheep won't mind."Eric Hansen has scored with this book, and I've recommended it to probably 40 people and given it as a gift to 5-6.Read it and enjoy in - on many levels.

The author has written an engaging, entertaining, beautifully discriptive book of Yemen. I visited Sana'a about 15 years ago and his book really hits the mark. I particularly enjoy how Mr. Hansen captures the culture and attitudes of the Yemen. He knows that that that culture is 180 degrees from Western culture and he treats Yemeni religion, customs and attitudes with respect and openness - yet does not patronize as do many other travel books.His writing is witting, self-deprecating and honest - completely enjoyable.

I received this book from the Goodreads First Reads Program in exchange for an honest review.If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch is a haunting read that will stay with you long after it's done. The novel stars Carey, a teenaged girl who has been living in an abandoned camper in the woods for years with her younger sister, Jenessa, who she has taken care of, while her druggie mother has been in and out of town and eventually, missing, for the past two months. The two girls get discovered by social services and Carey's father, whom she hasn't seen for a decade, and what happens next is a revelation, both for her and her new adoptive family.I don't want to give away too much about the plot, because it is so wonderful to discover all of the intricacies as you read yourself. The characters are deftly drawn, beautifully written, and poignant. Carey, the protagonist, carries the piece, which is vitally important to the success of this novel. She is very likeable and sympathetic as a character. Her younger sister, Jenessa, is the perfect combination of sweet and loveable, and mystery, since we know there is a reason why she hasn't talked for years. The supportive cast of characters is also wonderful, including Carey's father, Melissa, their new stepmother, Delly, the jealous new stepsister, and Pixie, an odd, whimsical new friend for Carey. The prose is gorgeous, and the description spot on. The plot races along at a perfect pace, and I was gripped from start to finish. As you can tell, I was greatly impressed by this novel.If I had anything less than positive to say about this novel, it has to do with the boy in this piece-- his part seems a little too easy, too perfect. But that's about all I can say about it-- it obviously didn't change my opinion about the book.Overall, a compelling, heartbreaking, and beautifully written first novel-- Murdoch is an extremely talented writer, and I will be watching for her future work.

Those are the perfect words to describe If You Find Me. The story might seem very complex with a lot of twists and mysteries seeing that the MC lived in the woods for most of her childhood, but it's really not. If You Find Me is a very simple, straight-forward story about a girl and her 5 year old sister trying to adjust in a civilized life after being raised in the woods by their mother. And such a horrible mother at that, but there no point in discussing her because then this review will turn into a rant. Moving on, I described the story as beautiful because of the precious sisterly bond between Carey and Janessa. Oh my god, I loved them! I loved that even though they didn't have everything, not the best clothes or enough food, they had each other all the time and none of them let the other down. Carey was basically Janessa's mom, she fed her, taught her, took care of her and maybe that's what made them so special and beautiful overall. There are a lot of WHYS in this storyline. Why did their mother took them in the wood? Why did she leave them? Why did Janessa stopped speaking? And the answers to those questions were completely heartbreaking. I knew something bad had happened for Janessa to act that way, but never in my life did I imagine what really went down. The last part was so hard for me to read, I couldn't see beyond my tears. It is surprising that such a short length book (250 pages) ended up touching me so deeply. In few pages, I learned a lot about family, strength, hope and love. There's this funny thing Carey always did that I thought was so sweet; whenever she wanted something, she prayed on a can of beans or actually the creator of fava beans, Saint Joseph because that's the only stable (I guess) food she had in the woods. Ahhh, I loved those parts, they made Carey so genuine. My favorite quality in Carey, besides her strength, innocence and her overall confidence was her respectful nature. She was so polite to everyone, her father, stepmother and even the annoying/immature step-sister, but she wasn't naive at all. If someone was rude to her, she'll gave them back in her own unique way. How awesome is that! I loved Carey! There are so many other things I want to share about this wonderful book, but then I'll spoil everything and we don't want that. In short, If You Find Me is a MUST READ! Highly recommended to anyone who loves contemporary and realistic reads. I do want to point out that this book is not about how Carey survived in woods, but more about how she's adapting to the new changes. Within few pages, she's rescued by her father, so we get to see the woods scenes in form of flashbacks. Though they still end up making such a powerful impact in the overall storyline. I don't think I'm going to forget Carey and Janessa anytime soon. They truly left a mark on me and I'll be revisiting their story again. Go pick up If You Find Me, you won't regret it.

An interesting book but not especially well written or organized and therefore rather hard to read. However, I found that once I got into the book, I wanted to struggle to the end since the material discussed is quite engrossing. I can recommend the book with reservations to anyone who is interested in the piano and how it evolved and carried romantic music with it. Chopin’s life is relevant to this as perhaps the supreme “poet of the piano”.

I loved all the details about Chopin's actual life, and the fascinating saga of the modest little piano on which he composed some of his most famous works, and the mystery of where it is now. I also really enjoyed learning more about how pianos evolved over the 19th and 20th century. I just couldn't put the book down!

It's mainly a very entertaining review of Wanda Landowsky-her life as a musician.

I appreciated the historical significance of Wanda Landowska to this story but would have appreciated a deeper analysis of Chopin's lover, George Sand, who propped him up while he composed 10 preludes on the piano, the focus of this book.

The book’s most powerful essays (“Men Explain Things To Me” and “#YesAllWomen”) are intelligent, clear-sighted looks at a massive, difficult, dangerous topic. It’s saddens me to applaud Solnit for her courage in writing this, if only because that acknowledges the typical backlash against women who speak out against misogyny, but she IS courageous and that alone warrants commendation.The book starts out with a funny, almost playful anecdote about being mansplained to by a pompous idiot at a party in Aspen, but then quickly moves into darker waters. Solnit goes on to use politics, art, history and new media as springboards for discussing the interconnectedness of cultural misogyny and how mansplaining and rape can be viewed as existing on a continuum. Towards the end of the book she summarizes this nicely: “It’s a slippery slope. That’s why we need to address the slope, rather than compartmentalizing the varieties of misogyny and dealing with them separately.” (p. 134) It’s a new way of looking at an ancient problem, articulated in a way that I don’t think I’ve heard before, and Solnit rounds out her case by anticipating counter arguments (i.e. men being falsely imprisoned for rape) and responding to them to the degree that they deserve.So here’s the part where I complain: While her arguments are culturally important and her writing is strong, Solnit’s rhetoric seems, at times, deliberately hyperbolic and meant to divide readers. On pg. 57 she describes the case of Ariel Castro, a man accused of imprisoning, torturing and sexually abusing three women as being “a vicious version of the traditional [marriage] arrangement.” Later on in the book (p. 153) she takes a similar swipe at capitalism: “There’s more that we need to be liberated from… a system that serves environmental destruction and limitless consumption…” And beyond that there’s a general celebration of revolution, (non-violent) anarchy, as well as Solnit’s insistence that this is, indeed, “a war.” In other words, if you’re traditional / conservative / old-fashioned, then chances are you’re probably going to feel pretty alienated while reading this, if not all out attacked. I don’t consider myself conservative, but there were still times when I felt myself getting defensive. With that said, I was less annoyed with this on ideological terms than I was by what felt like a tactical mis-step. Simply put: This is a wise book. This is an important book. A lot of people should be reading it and absorbing it's message. And I could suddenly feel thousands of readers— good people who’s minds are ready to be expanded— fleeing from it’s very positive message, because they were being lumped in with rapists and murderers. I was frustrated because I felt like the book was preaching to the choir and, in-so-doing, entrenching conservatives deeper into their current belief systems.One could argue that this book isn't intended to convert and so it's unfair to judge it by those standards; that it’s a celebration and reminder of what’s already been accomplished in the fight for gender equality, and that now it’s up to someone else to write the gentler, more palatable book that eases The Other Side into progressive thinking. And you know what— that may very well be the case. In the meantime, I encourage conservative thinkers who are interested in reading this to do so with an open mind instead of just looking for things to disagree with. Because the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of what’s discussed in this book really has nothing to do with superficial left / right politics and everything to do with how we want our nieces/daughters to be treated as they grow up in the world. And that feels like something we can all agree on.

Written to the point and to the heart of the matter. Don't explain things to me that I understand better than you and don't tell me to smile. These seem like small things, but follow the thread. They are significant parts of a much larger picture. I have said these words for YEARS and it's nice to read someone else's thoughts that echo my own. Highly recommended reading for young women who weren't around when this fight began. Perspective is everything in finding our path forward.

I grew up in the 50's and so have lived through the last 60 years of the ongoing struggle for equality, equal rights and equal pay--and the every day ongoing struggle simply to be treated as a human being with free will. And, of course, beyond the equality issue, there's always the inherent danger involved simply because you are born female. I was continually warned and told what I could do, what I could wear and where I could go. I lived in a 3rd World country as an adolescent, and believe me, we young women paid attention to the advice to "dress like a lady" "don't go out after dark alone" "don't meet anyone's eyes" etc. etc. Being female, for much of my life, has been been like having, through no fault of my own, a target painted on my back. Long story short, this book connects a whole lot of dots, with a clear-eyed glance through history and from there into the realities of the present, where not much below the surface gloss has changed. Everyone with a HS or college age girl -- or boy, for that matter - should purchase a copy of this fierce, beautifully written, TRUE book and then preach on the text. In 149 pages, Ms. Solnit turns my gaze toward a better, more honest future in which both sexes can claim power and respect.

Brilliant book. It changed my perspective. It starts with an amusing story about mansplaining. Solnit then ties the dynamic behind mansplaining to a web of much more sinister problems including all angles of men exploiting women and nations exploiting each other.
