This book always send me on an emotional roller coaster every single time. I read this book four or five times. Each time I read it, I don't put it down with dry eyes.The book tells the story how one can either overcome the fast life (Netta), live by it and die by it (Black), or succumb to it (Mimi).This was an emotional tale of three youths, two girls and a boy who became products of their environment. I'm stopping my review right here. A review cannot even begin to describe how well written this novel is. Holmes did a fantastic job. This book will make novice or reluctant readers become avid readers overtime.Holmes character development was on point. He made me scared of Black and I was just reading about him!!I'm stopping right here. Awesome, awesome job Mr. Holmes!
B-More Careful was a raw and gritty account of what takes place in the life of the streets. The premise of the story was based on betrayal, deception and treachery.I would have rated this book five stars had it not been for the excessive typos and grammatical errors I came across. Nevertheless, Shannon Holmes is an exceptional and talented writer.B-More Careful was fast paced. I was able to visualize and feel everything as if I was there.I admit, I had a difficult time getting through this story. The characters and content felt so real to me. In reading this story, which took place in Baltimore, I came to understand the realities of the streets. The game is certainly not a lifestyle I would want to be a part of, because of all the danger, backstabbing, jealousy, envy, betrayal, greed and revenge which is paramount.B-More Careful emphasized the life of drugs, money, sex and murder. There is nothing glamorous or attractive about it based on what I read. This story made me sad.Shannon Holmes did not sugar coat anything. He gave it to you straight and to the point. The characters who stood out for me were Black, Netta and Mimi. Black and Netta being the most ruthless of them all.Unfortunately, there was no happy Hollywood ending either. All in all, B-More Careful taught me a great deal and opened my eyes to the harsh realities of a world I knew very little about.
The thing that I liked most was that, no matter her circumstances or wrong decisions, Netta never gave up, she kept moving forward!!! What I like least was how so many lost their lives over revenge and jealousy, which happened in the past and continues to happen in the present, and if no change comes about will carry over into the future of our society and continue to claim so many precious lives!
I am an avid reader of urban fiction and non-fiction African American literature. This book offers an exciting mixture of the two. For instance, the gritty truth of hard-core living in poverty- stricken urban cities mixes with the exciting story of sex, greed, betrayal and lies, friendships,and family. His plot is dynamic and his characters are ego-driven. I read this book twice (both in a matter of days). Shannon Holmes is an excellent writer as he keeps reader's interest throughout every page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone seeking a release from the ordinary looking for an exciting world to imaging oneself in.
I didn't read this for a great piece of literature but rather to be entertained by a novel concerning a different life than I normally see, girls growing up in the ghetto dating the players and all the problems that implies. Actually, I read the first 100 pages and left my book at an airport. After a week I was interested enough in the characters that I had to buy another.This book narrates the lives of two girls growing up in the ghetto trying to break out of past patterns and how they are drug back in. They recognize what their value is and become determined to use it to their advantage. But sometimes when you play with fire you get fire, and that's exactly what happens.I found this an interesting read that in the last quarter of the book has some interesting plot twists that make the book even more interesting. If you are interested in reading a book of growing up in the ghetto, even though there are stereotypes and exaggerations, I would recommend this book.
This book will get five stars from me. I live in the Washington, D.C./Balitmore Area so everything felt like home to me. The mentality, the clothing, the locations.....everything. I am not really into reading books, but when a girlfriend referred this book, I decided to read it. And let me tell you, from the beginning to the end I was stuck. Found my self reading it in bed at night. So if you enjoy REALNESS within a book, this book is for you. I will admit there were errors in the writing of the book but that made it even better...to show the rawness at stake. I am going to promote this book!
This is my first time reading this story in years. Tone & Netta deserved a happier ending but then that would mean the story would be over. Black got less than he deserved & that damn Mimi is just needy. I love the story but there were a lot of mistakes in the book.
I flat out returned my digital copy of this book because of the errors, grammar, ​and bad writing. I could not get past the first few pages. I'm all for self-publishing and supporting urban authors but if I'm spending $9.99 on a book from Amazon I expect it's run through a qualified editor. The plot in the first few pages I read was semi-interesting so I decided to give it two stars rather than one.
