I've been a fan of Eric Vall since his first book Planet Broker was recommended to me, and as a result I pick up every book he's written. Most of it is in the Fantasy genre, and then this book came out. So I pick up the book because, of course, fan. Then I read what it was about. Doomsday prepping and the like. Not what I normally read, but I put my trust in Eric and he delivered a story about a guy surviving during doomsday that seemed fairly realistic. As a result, I now have to go hunting for more doomsday prepping. Eric, if you read this, I thank you for another outstanding book.

This story has been told a number of times, but with the genre the details can be manipulated in hundreds of ways. In Anya Merchant's last man harem story, a young man managed to get his stepmother into a fallout shelter just before a meteor snacks into the earth, In another a young man emerges from a camping trip only to discover that a strange disease has killed off all makes in a week!The story's are a guilty pleasure and a nice way to pass a few hours. If this sort of tale interests you, then give it a try by all means!

I've enjoyed most of the output if this recent author, and I like this more than the rest. Reminded me of some of the classic scifi "end of the world" books. Tightly written, descriptive, excellent production values. Bit sexier than those times, though, and definitely of the "harem" genre that's become popular. Looking forward to the next book!

Tale of a stressed soldier returning from his walkabout and finding that something has caused the world to change. He finds and saves a small group whilst teaching them about surviving at a small rural college. Multiple encounters with an amoral motorcycle gang indicate trouble is on the horizon.

Great new series and though I don’t want it to replace dungeon master I really enjoyed. Much more of a survival feel to it like MSE tamer series. It’s a different pace than most of the series but it’s very well done and should be exciting to see how things go.

Every book that Eric writes, the better he gets! Great main character, very believable plot and realistic situations for his characters to get through. Waiting breathlessly for book 2!

I look forward to the next book in this series. Overall it had a good balance between action, suspense and humor. Keep up the good work.

Kinda follows the same old tropes, but the MC isnt the 100% secret squirrel operator. Looking foward to number two.

What great Buffalo history and thorough presentation of Olmsted and Buffalo's parks. It's a great coffee table book, but, moreso, it is easy and engaging reading, cover to cover. Not the dry book I feared it might be. I enjoyed it and will probably give it as a gift many times over.

Wonderful! I love my Buffao City!! This book highlights this wonderful park system we have. If you'd like to see how a great planning method can be realized read this book.

A very nice collection of photographs and drawings that highlight and showcase the work of Olmsted and Vaux in Buffalo. It shows both the beginning and evolution of the park system, with wonderful pictures of the times.

What a great story! The best landscape architect with all the great pictures to match! If you love Buffalo and parks, this one's for you!

who knows? I gave to Dad, and as usual i never hear anything back, you give expensive great presents that are even thoughtful (did he give me anything?NO) and then i never hear anything - why do i do this to myself?

Having read the author's biography of Calvert Vaux, I looked forward to this book with its focus on Olmsted, the other half of the designers who collaborated on the invention of New York's Central Park and so many other parks across the nation (although it is Olmsted who must be given the most credit with convincing cities to plan beautiful parks that all their citizens could enjoy). My wife and I were also visiting Buffalo for the first time so that reading this book gave us the framework and history we needed in order to drive around the city and encounter the significant remains of Olmsted's great park system (and really city street design). This book is thorough in its recounting of how the system came to be and satisfyingly descriptive, both in text and visualization, of the park system as it evolved and remains today. The book is reflective itself of its subject, well-planned and executed with great attention to detail. The dust jacket with its sweeping wraparound photograph of one of the park landscapes is beautiful and also symbolic of Olmsted's own vision. The maps and historic photographs are well chosen. But it is the solid research and convincing writing that provides the satisfying foundation for this well-wrought work. .

What is especially nice is that the author gives the full history, and then tells us how the particular park is fairing today. Sometimes, not so well, other times, great. But as readers and citizens, we should know that.

And the last quarter of the book is wrapped in Daniel's search for his own family, culminating in a quietly tense encounter with someone from his long-ago past.Daniel almost seems like a character too good to be true -- unselfish, kind, universally kindly and very intelligent, though possessed of a vaguely searching quality. Gwendolyn is his complete opposite: she has been raised to be selfish, disdainful and immature, but as the book goes on she learns that selfishness doesn't pay -- marriage to the despicable Grandcourt changes her from a selfish little girl into a scarred but stronger woman.The third leg of the triangle is Mirah, who is not given the loving attention that Gwendolyn is, but who is still a compelling figure -- her father tried to sell her, and now she wanders through England searching for her family. And the book is littered with many other striking characters: the sadistic Grandcourt and his creepy servant Lush, the crotchety but kindly Klesmer, the spirited artist Hans, the kindly Sir Hugo and the doomed, strong-willed Mordecai."Daniel Deronda" is a beautiful portrait of a young man's search for his past, and a young woman's struggle with the fruits of her own selfishness. What's more, George Eliot's last novel is a loving, powerful portrait of the Jewish people, in a time when they were caricatured at best.

This is a sleeper of a classic in my opinion. Anyone into classics should give it a read. Of course there are references that you either have to overlook or look up, that have to do with things that were popular at the time. Its Elliot's contemporary novel, her others were set in the past. Her breadth of vocabulary alone takes your breath away, as well as her writing ability and style. I learned more new words in Daniel Deronda than I've learned reading any other single book in the last 10 years. This is really a psychological, philosophical and even political novel, with intense and indelible characters whose inner lives are brought to vivid life. Every character is intricately developed, in all their complexity and contradictions. What I particularly love is author's ability to capture the maturation process, the growth of the characters over the course of events and time. She reveals how even one conversation with a person can cause a change in an individual.

Don't buy this horrible book, or maybe I should say "book". It is a cheap, unreadable digitized version of an 1876 edition. At 11 lines of text per inch, the blurry 6 point type is too densely packed to be read comfortably without a magnifying glass. Some of the pages came out printed at a slant. BiblioLife must know what a poor product this is. If you had the book in front of you and could look at the pages you would never buy it. Of course when you see it online it looks like a normal book. In reality it is useless.

Elliot writes a long, slow-moving drama of character study, tragic marriage, Judaism, family misfortunes with themes of women's liberation and subjection, and personal identity.The novel has two separate stories joined together by Daniel Deronda. Each of them features a compelling woman who is involved with Daniel.I found this much less compelling than Middlemarch, and horribly slow. Most novels this static I would have put down, but this is Elliot and her characters are very well drawn.The novel highlights the repression of women in Victorian society - both of Gwendolen, and Daniel's mother who rebelled. And Mirah herself has been used like a puppet by her father.I'm glad I read it. But it took some time.

Victorian novels are not to everyone's taste with a very leisurely pace, lots of extraneous characters and scenes and endless social interaction, but if you have the patience this is a great book with a couple of great characters, an interesting plot, an author with a great eye for detail, and an eye opening treatment of the place of women and Jews in mid-nineteenth century England. Probably the best defense of Zionism in all of literature and many years before the horrors of Europe's efforts to exterminate the Jews a compelling argument for a Jewish state in the Jews' historical homeland.

"The Miracle Club" is a fantastic work, I would say it is Mitch Horowitz’s best book so far, and I’ve read the majority of his book, and "The Miracle Club" is one of the best books I’ve read in the last decade. In it Horowitz addresses one of the largest failings of the New Age, New Thought, Self-Help, and Human Potential Movement books to be written in recent years, most importantly, the failure of such teachers to encourage their students to look at ethics.I’ve been heavily involved in the New Age and Holistic movement for over a decade now, and have found that there is a serious lack of ethics and moral understanding in much of the modern teachings that are being sold to students. In particular this is very noticeable in the Law of Attraction (LoA) and New Thought movements, as Horowitz points out The Science of Getting Rich, which was used to create The Secret, was a tritest by a socialistic minister on how to use positive thinking to even out the power balance between the Owners and the Works, and now has been used to create a weak and watered down understanding of how to use positive thinking to get worldly goods, without looking at the other aspects of how New Thought/LoA can be used to better the world, along with oneself.This is not to say that Horowitz doesn’t give insight into how to use Positive Metaphysics to gain material goods, however, what Horowitz focuses on is how to dig deep into yourself and make sure what you believe you want is what you want, and then how to go about using Positive Metaphysics, a concrete directed aim, and the knowledge that you may have to apply “real life” skills to help bring about the changes in your life; it’s not just about positive thinking.Horowitz not only stands on the shoulders of giants in the making of this book, but he reaches far above them. He has taken teachings and concepts that are often consider passé or outdated and turned them from dross into gold for new generations of spiritual seekers, giving guideposts and trailer makers for fellow travelers, and more importantly, hope for those who are trying to find ways to live a spiritual life, and yet make change in the world.

This is the first book I have read of the authors, I came to know him from an interview on inspire nation, so I was excited to read this book, I pre ordered it on my kindle and audible, this book is very deep and thought provoking, with mitch being a very well know historian on new thought, esoterics and the like he delves deep into those aspects. I learned a lot from this book he talks a lot about the new thought leaders of the past and with Neville goodard being one of my favorites I got to learn a lot about him and his past. I really enjoyed this book its not your typical woo woo type book but gets to the history of the new thought era and positive thinking. It gave me a lot of new insights. Like Mitch quotes be your own experiment thats the only way you will know and that is point on.

Mitch's work is intelligent, exciting, and thorough. I have spent the last few hours going over his latest offering and it's densely packed with every relevant topic and how to put those topics clearly in motion!

I first heard about this book On Whitley Strieber's Dreamland. It's one of the best of its kind I've ever read. Horowitz lays out his beliefs, techniques, and philosophy is such a clear, straightforward way that I was riveted throughout. What's particularly interesting is that as a former editor, he used to buy New Age - New Thought - books like this. But The Miracle Club is unique.Horowitz provides historical backdrops for the idea that our imaginations and emotions create our experiences. I found the material on Neville Goddard fascinating and was intrigued by the author's inclusion of personal anecdotes about how Goddard's simple techniques have worked for him. Now I'm off to buy Horowitz's other books. This one really deserves 10 stars!

I've been a fan of Mitch and his work for years now. His excellence in telling history knows no bounds. His entry into working with your own thoughts is up to the challenge too. Your thoughts are causative. Yes. The methods described have cousins in many schools of thought and the occult. Those are the places people searched for real methods to gain real results. Mitch brings them here. The directions of achieving proper mental state and what to do with it are worth your price of admission. I found myself highlighting many paragraphs for further investigation. But the book. Read it. Next, Try it!

Faaaantastic.I had to skim through most of it after getting through half of it, but that's because I received what I needed to after many, many hours of this study. I bought this title with high aspirations, thinking of my days as a youth reading the old "Popular Science" magazines and other how-to manuals. Unfortunately, this book fails miserably in living up to the reputation implied by its previous reviews. The book is woefully inadequate in terms of details on "how" to do the projects/activities it covers and mostly looks like someone just photocopied pages out of an old Popular Mechanics or Popular Science magazine and shrunk them down to fit a small book. The illustrations in the book are far to small to be of any meaningful use in recreating the items pictured and like another weekend project book I bought for my boys, this one would be better suited for the coffee table or bathroom book nook than as a "how-to" manual for dads seeking to fill their boy's idle time with practical activities. It's a great book if you're not really looking for a handy how-to book, but I only gave it two stars, as it's clearly marketed incorrectly as a "how-to" manual when it's more of a nostalgic coffee table book. Caveat emptor...

Popular mechanics was the bee's knees as a kid 50 years ago. These little projects seemed to make the amazing possible ... or, most probably, provided the lesson in reality that I was really needing. I think I developed a popular mechanics project worldview for a time. I was on a mission to solve every human mechanical defugalty with a little Rube Goldberg-like solution. MacGyver had to have been a PM and PS reader!These are the originals from PM. One reviewer laments the lack of detail in the projects. That would be correct ... the details are a bit lacking, occasionally the omissions are major but mostly minor. The details, on the other hand, would have spoiled the raw pleasure of the discovery and invention required to complete the project using your own "plan B".I hope my grandkids `get it'!

Too bad Millenials don't know how to use a hammer. They truly are missing out.

It was for my grandson; he likes the projects but needs help from someone closer to him to help him. I live 2 hours away so do not have enough visits to keep him encouraged. I am 80 and he is 10, he needs someone where he lives and his dad commutes too far to be much help.

I bought this book to reminisce about my child hood - It has lots of great project ideas - including a model train layout that a father and son could build. I found this to be more of an idea book - some of the projects would take more skill in machining and a more advance shop than what I have at my disposal. My grandson and I have enjoyed looking at the projects and dreaming about building them.

Fun book to read with many hand built toys and projects your grandpa or Great Great grandfather used as boys! Still viable for today! if you like nostalgic books and your like crafts like making all sorts of toys this is the book. Fun and fun to share with your children / Grandchildren.

I wish I would have learned this stuff growing up.

Middleton has spoiled us with quality books, and "Manhattan Gateway" is no exception.This book contains a well-balanced selection of how and why this beautiful structure came to life, as well as the incredible engineering that made Penn Station possible.I am not a New Yorker or an American at all.. I live in Rome, Italy and the similarities with the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla is daunting.Middleton focuses on technical as well as architectural details and I strongly recommend this book to whoever is interested in either subject.Also noteworthy are the captions of how the Hell's Gate Bridge was constructed and how the "new" Pennsylvania Station will look like, returning this New York terminal to some of the architectural magnificence intended by the great architects Mc Kim, Meade and White (designers of the original station).If you like New York, especially for what was lost menially in this great city.. you will love this book.
