I bought this book when I was less than 200 pages into The Lies of Locke Lamora. I adored it; the world, the characters, the intricacies of the cons. It was something I didn't know I was looking for until it was in my hands.I'd regard the second book as highly if the story that was built up within the first 200 pages is the story we got. The first chapter was brilliantly written, and spurred me to shirk my adult responsibilities as I was drawn deeper into the narrative. Fans of the first book knew there was plenty of room for raising the stakes, and it seemed as though Red Seas Under Red Skies would deliver on that.Unfortunately the main plot - as well as all the characters I'd grown to care about - were told to bugger off around 300 pages in while Locke and Jean meandered out to sea.I'm torn. I don't hate everything about the middle section of the book, and though I wish the story had gone in another direction (primarily because there were too many plotlines and too many things that weren't followed up on or not given nearly as much development as I'd have liked), I can see why Lynch went in the direction he did.The book's biggest problem is that you could cut around 200 pages of content and wind up with a much stronger product. All the time spent on explaining sailing and nautical terms and this and that was time I'd have rather spent reading about the intricacies of a new con, or delving deeper into Locke's backstory.It didn't help that time skipped about however it wished. There's a particularly bad instance at the beginning of chapter eleven where the narrative jumps forward by several hours following the last chapter, but then the second scene goes right back to the end of the last chapter without warning, and it took me a minute to figure out what was happening. Confusion mixed with long passages about things I don't care about do not make for a pleasant time.I'll say this - Lynch did a marvelous job of describing things I don't care about. He simply couldn't make it interesting in a context where it ground the main plot to a halt.I can't help but get the feeling he felt so much pressure to up the stakes following a first novel where things went to hell in fantastic fashion that he went too far with this one and couldn't keep the plot focused as a result. It's not a bad book by any means, but the best parts largely copy the formula from the first book, and the second act lull is long and dull enough I had to flip back to earlier pages to remind myself what was going on when the plot kicked back into gear.If you haven't read The Lies of Locke Lamora, pick it up. It's well worth your coin. If you enjoy the banter between Locke and Jean, Red Seas Under Red Skies is worth a look. The dialog is as sharp as ever, and despite my overall feelings about the tale, I love the characters more than I did going into it.If you enjoyed Lies more for the con, the consistent pacing, the gradual escalation of the main threat, and the steady build that led to an explosive (and immensely satisfying) conclusion, you'll find some of that here, but it's not going to thrill you half as much as the first book. You could skip from chapter seven to chapter thirteen or fourteen and not miss much of importance.Lynch is a solid writer and world builder. He has a great vision for this series, but for whatever reason things didn't quite gel in this entry. I'm going to read the third book despite seeing several middling reviews because the characters and the world are strong enough to keep me hooked despite the flaws, but I have to admit parts of Red Seas Under Red Skies were slogs nearly on par with the sections of Lord of the Rings where Tolkien was so charmed by a particular arrangement of stones or trees he had to write about them for several pages, or have characters sing for whole chapters. This isn't a book for the casual Locke Lamora/fantasy enthusiast.

Book 2 is just as thrilling as Book 1. One must love Locke and Jean because while they are thieves, they are honorable, good guys who appeal to the heart. They take but give, receive and offer. They fight alongside their friends and take down their enemies. Yet, for all their thievery, they are loyal, nice guys. It's bizarre to say but they are really charming.In Book 2, they voyage from land to sea. Their loss of friends remains heavy on their hearts but they continue on as the notorious, "Gentleman Bastards", true priests of the Crooked Warden, the 13th God. Locke leads the way as the mastermind with Jean at his side.Jean and Locke find themselves in the company of pirates after they are forced to aid a rogue leader. The Bondsmagi are still pissed over their fingerless and tongueless comrade so they continue to plot against Locke and Jean by exposing their identities and whereabouts to men who may come across them. Their watchful eyes puts them on the archon's radar. Again Locke and Jean are taken out of their comfort zone of masterminding cons for financial gain to masterminding cons in order to stay alive. This time, the hustlers get hustled.Brilliantly written! Great story, with two lovely and fierce female protagonists joining the men. The ending is endearing but heartbreakingly sad.I love Locke's compassion, how easily wounded he gets when insulted and Jean's sensitivity to loss and the ease at which he cries. Their friendship is one of a kind and so very admirable. What remains present when reading their story is that both men didn't choose to be thieves, they were made thieves. They don't play honest but they play gentle unless forced into a fight. They are an unforgettable pair much like Holmes and Dr. Watson in that they are entertaining and work well together on the opposite side of the law.

For me, this was a let-down after the first Locke Lamora book. Where the first captured and held my attention from the first moment, this one was slow to gain speed, and, once it did, was so full of complexities and plots within plots and characters within characters that I had a hard time staying with it. Once the main characters get on the ship and develop interesting relationships with the interesting characters there, it speeds up and becomes interesting, but it takes half the book to get there. And then, before it's over with again, the reader is forced to return to the mind-exhausting complexity of plots within plots in order to make sense of the ending.I still give it 4 stars because I love this character and several of the secondary characters, and the good parts were worth wading through the meh parts. However, I will probably not read the third book, as I fear it is likely to be equally or even more complex, and ... I'd rather spend time with characters than plot twists.

The first book was a fun adventure everyone should read. This second book reads like the author had no plan and the editor said, “whatever, we need to release something.”This is a classic problem of an author who wants to widen the world they’ve created, but doen’t know how. Think Robert Jordan or Martin after a few books ... except this is book two.The crux of the issue here is that there isn’t a coherent main arc. The book is a group of scenes where it looks like the author got bored about a third of the way through. The reader could skip the beginning of the book and just start mid way through maybe.The pirates or kind of endearing, but it’s far too long of walk to get there. The character changes aren’t earned and really don’t make sense.I started skimming about 100 pages in and just burnt though the last 100 pages because I was so far in. This book is a skip and it reflects very poorly on the author, editor and publisher after a fantastic first book.

It's a very small, thin book. It has just a couple of templates to make these tiny, tiny shoes. When I say tiny, I mean like small even for a cupcake topper. However, if that's what you're looking for, then this book is great. I did not think it was worth the price.

I actually bought this book to get some ideas for clay items that I wanted to make. I has quite a few ideas that can be used with cakes or clay. I only wish there were more.

It's like 6 pages of plane pictures... Pointless

My two year old son loves this book. He studies the illustrations carefully, and points out every little detail. He carries around the book with him everywhere, even to the table for lunch. Good thing the book is a board book, because I can wipe it clean when he gets it dirty. I will order more books from the author because I know he will enjoy those too.

This is just a picture book...no story to go along with the pictures. Before I bought it I thought it was similar to Cars and Trucks and Things that Go, which my son loved.

Not the best book ever, it's not a story, just named planes. The kids like the book, but they like stories more.

Absolutely love the author. Love the illustrations. I had his books when I was young. Going to pass them on to my child. Hope he loves them as much as I did. Would recommend to anyone.

my boy is crazy for airplanes (up planes) and this book is great. perfect size for a 2yo, he turns the pages, we point to objects and colors and try to say the words. i come up with silly 2 sentence stories for each page.

Not a story - just pictures of different planes, but my 2 year old son loves planes and it was great to have on our 12 hour plane trip!

As another review mentioned, reading this book is like sitting down at the kitchen table and learning about reef aquariums from a good friend. I wanted to catch up on any changes in the hobby since back when I started, and picked this because of its 5-star rating. I've read many books on reef aquariums, fish and coral over the years and this is easily one of the best. As someone who has had a reef aquarium for over 20 years, I can tell you that his information is accurate and his advice is spot-on. If you're just getting started with a reef aquarium, this is your go-to book.

I recently decided to start a saltwater tank and bought a Biocube 29. During my initial days of research, I combed the internet and found way too much information out there that was either contradicting or confusing (for a noob). I started searching Amazon for a book to read that kept it simple as possible and presented a reasonable amount of information for the money. I decided to download a sample for this book, and really liked the tone (not overly serious and sometimes quite funny), plus it covered everything a noob like me should know (without major overkill or information that might scare you from starting the hobby), so I decided to buy it.I read the entire book over the course of a couple days and LOVED it! The information presented was full and easy to understand, and fun to read. I highly recommend this book if you're thinking about starting a hobby or are in the initial stages of starting. I've gone to it a few times afterwards to re-fresh also, so it's a good point of reference to have on hand later on. I joined the author's blog and found it to be informative and he's very open to help anybody that might have a quirky question (like me!). Totally worth $8...don't hesitate especially if you enjoy the sample Kindle provides.

This book was a great introduction into the hobby, offering a great foundation for diving into the saltwater world. It was entertaining to read, and flowed well. This is hardly a comprehensive (or advanced) resource, so I would recommend this book as one component of your saltwater fish keeping library.

With a few decades of old school Amazon fresh water aquarium husbandry, I was encouraged to go salt water with a nano 20 gallon all in one tank. I needed a starting point resources, and found it 5 star in this book. Thank you for writing it!

As a beginner in the world of saltwater I've been reading every book I can find on the subject. This book and the other two written by the author have by far been the most informative and interesting as a beginner. The information in all three books have been to the point, realistic, and very easy to comprehend. A few books I've read you would need a degree in marine biology to understand but the author does a great job translating the never ending information needed to know for this hobby. I consider all three books a must read for anyone interested in the hobby, the authors knowledge mixed with his humor makes all three books an informative and easy read.

Most helpful of all & i've purchased & read 15 now. Many of the others are filled with great information it's just that this book gives you confidence to start & the desire to do a good job of it. He keeps it simple & gives you the rationale which makes you want to learn more. wish it was bound & not just an e-book...

Clear, simply terms and explanations for all of the basics in setting up and maintaining a salt water aquarium. I loved the humor throughout - it took what could have been a dry topic and made it entertaining!!! Thank you Al!!!

If you are a dedicated Warhammer fan this book is most certainly for you. Though on the expensive side, I would argue that this one is worth the price tag. Unlike some of the novellas that come out demanding similar amounts of money. If you want to understand the idea of Chaos in Warhammer this is what you need. If you are more interested in the art then the substance it REALLY has you covered. The art in this book the styles of the fonts and the pictures of the minions of Nurgle, Slaneesh ,Tzeentch and Khorne are simply amazing. This book is certainly full of color and a great read to boot.Loved every second of it.

This book carries a steep price but in my estimation is more than worth picking up. I've been a fan of Warhammer since I was 8. I love the old system and this new system. If you have never seen any of the info presented in the old (1st edition) Chaos books then this book is for you. It covers all four Chaos gods. There is a little bit of Warhammer 40K presented here. Most of the info is WFRP. The artwork is as impressive as ever and this book is filled with it. Now for the FAIR WARNING. This book does NOT contain ANY statistic info. Any number junkies out there would want to avoid this book. I though it would be nice to have all the info on Chaos in one book including stats but oh well. It is a good read. It is written as if it is an actual book of research about chaos. Quite fun to be reading something in it and see the researchers hand writing in different ink making notes to things he referenced earlier or correcting himself or even getting a nose bleed while trying to figure out choas calculations. On the nose bleed page there several drops of blood that stain the page. It is a massive book, well bound, and in hardback with a soft cover flap.

Im more of a Warhammer 40k fan. (It covers a little of that) It it is am excellent read. It gives much insight into the world of Warhammer.

Book arrived in good condition - one minor dent which occurred during postage but otherwise fine. Arrived in a decent timeframe too.

This is the best book about the Chaos Gods and the second best book about Chaos in general after «Tome of Corruption» (WFRP). Extremely well narrated and very well thought. The author have succeed to present the nature and aspects of the Chaos Gods and their followers like never before. This is a classic for Warhammer.One could think that the Chaos and the Chaos Gods of Warhammer would present the perfect setting to get stories of anti-hero in abundance. However, so far I found none that was very satisfying. «Palace of the Plague Lord» and «Blood for the blood god» are set in the Chaos waste, but they are not that much sinister because they are rather conventional after all. The second one is not totally boring, but not that great either. It give you a fun trip, but nothing more.To get a proper fix of vileness and horror from the Ruinous Power, the Warhammer fan will have to find it outside the Black Library novels. The coveted heretical manuscript lay with this book. Lucky you, Black Library reprinted the book in november 2009 in hardcover, so that it can endure more mistreatment and compulsive reading usage.I can't recommend this magnificient book enough. Like I said, it is the best book about the Chaos Gods and their symbolic ever written so far. It's not a novel, but it is neither a book for the tabletop game or the roleplaying game. There is no statistics and such into this book. It content and structure are purely literate. The goal of the book is to develop and to dig the symbolic and the meaning associated to each Chaos Gods. It also cover their minions and followers, but they are used as a mean to explain and to push further the psychology and implications associated to the the four Chaos Gods motto (Blood, Pleasure, Decay and Change). It present the information as if it have been written by different characters and scholars who would have collected thoughts, interviews reports and evidence on the topic. In that sens, it is a little bit like a collection of short fictions on a common topic. If you like the universe of Warhammer or if you are a fan of fantasy literature, you will enjoy this reading for sure.

Wow. That's really all I can say to sum up this collection. Wow. I did not purchase the individual volumes and only became aware of the series recently when I found a listing for this book. As the description states, this book is essentially an overview of Warhammer's four Chaos gods. Now, there have been several books released covering similar territory, but never have I seen one so well done. The twin Realms of Chaos volumes put out by Games Workshop in the early 1990s are almost as good, but Liber Chaotica just oozes a style, atmosphere, and character unlike anything I've ever seen in a gaming suppliment. It's worth mentioning that this book contains absolutely no game rules for either Warhammer Fantasy Battles or Warhammer 40K (in fact, it makes no mention of the 40K universe). This fact makes it more a resource for players of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay than the wargaming crowd. But my god, what a resource! The whole book is written as if it were penned by the Imperial scholar Richter Kless, a device that worked quite well in the old Earthdawn and Shadowrun suppliments from FASA. The idea is that you get an educated overview of Chaos from the perspective of a character who lives in the Warhammer world. What makes it work so well in Liber Chaotica is that Kless actually goes back and adds handwritten annotations to his work. Over the course of the book's five volumes, readers get to watch his sanity slowly deteriorate as he exposes himself to the subtle, corrupting influence of Chaos. The Horrors Sourcebook for FASA's Earthdawn was written (and written well) in the same fashion, but that book's relative brevity robbed it of the impact that Liber Chaotica manages to achieve.The book itself is a work of art. It is well bound and lavishly (and, at times, disturbingly) illustrated. I simply cannot recommend it enough to anyone who has an interest in the forces of Chaos in the Warhammer world. Buy it before it goes out of print, you will not be disappointed.
