Love this book. We started to make the houses and our cats and kittens love them. We work with a rescue group and plan to make these for our fellow volunteers and for craft fairs.

I knew my cat (donâ€™t laugh at her name) Sweetiepie prefers low ceilings and I only had one box, a nornstrum box, so I saw what I could make. It turns out my cat likes that better than my big project, an actual castle I tried to make for her from online. The point is, the book has good ideas and is very inspirational. And to the person who said â€œno exact measurementsâ€ is a bad thing, their wrong because all cats or kittens or tiny puppies are most likely different sizes and shapes. Yay Cat Castles!

I had the pleasure of golfing with Carl several years ago in Charlotte, North Carolina. Those two experiences changed my entire approach and outlook on golf. One day he walked up to me and asked if he could join me on the back nine. Of course I obliged him without knowing a thing about him. During the next ninety minutes I came to realize how fortunate I was to be in his company. I solicited any suggestions he might have to improve my irons game. His suggestions were based on his extensive golf experiences and explained in a very pragmatic way. To my surprise, he invited me to join him the following day at a very upscale country club in Charlotte. It is a day I'll never forget. At the end of the day he gave me his phone number and an invitation to call anytime I am in the area. The minute I returned to NJ, I ordered his book. You will enjoy the book from many different perspectives. The book makes you realize what we already know...golfers never stop learning or trying to improve their game. This book will keep you on the right path!

Carl focuses on the details of a proper setup as a prerequisite to making the trigger move he introduced in his earlier book. Using Carl's setup fundamentals makes a proper start to the swing almost automatic. I highly recommend this book.

Mr. Lohren is the greatest golf instructor in the history of golf according to Deane Beman, and now I see why.He doesn't guess because his theories have been tested under the highest level of pressure when he played tournament golf.I believe if Tiger Woods had Carl Lohren as his mentor and instructor he would have already won 30 Majors.

This book dispels some of the methods the pros teach because we don't swing like the pros. It does not have allot of information to digest, just a little change in basic setup and it helps !

There is really nothing new here. Like all other beginning golf instructional books, this covers the basics like grip, stance, posture, alignment, etc. The only difference in this book is the author's suggestion that the backswing has to start with a turning of the left shoulder. If you are a raw beginner there are many other books on the market that go into more detail and cover all aspects of the game. If you are an experienced golfer I really don't think you will learn anything new from this book.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Any one of the volumes of HoME (History of Middle Earth) is intended for those who are interested in having a glimpse of Tolkien's creative process and how his characters and the world he created developed and evolved. They are not really intended for those casual readers that perhaps loved the Lord of the Rings but were not really thrilled by the Silmarillion.That being said, I am a Tolkien lover and I love these books. I even bought two editions of each HoME volume, the hardbound for keeps and the paperback mass market edition to read and make notes. They are well worth the money!

I bought this volume hoping to learn more about how Tolkien developed the Elvish script (Sindarin?) , that is the Elvish "writing" as is shown on "The One Ring" and the front cover of some editions of The Lord of the Rings as well as inside the trilogy in a few places. To me, at least, this (admittedly invented ) writing is beautiful to look at. In that respect, the book let me down, but that is not a fault of the book or the writer as I should have researched that more carefully prior to ordering. The book does cover the Elvish words, their development as well as the process Tolkien went through over the years to flesh out some of his writings. This book will fascinate the Lord of the Rings "historians" and especially budding and professional linguists, but I am not among the ranks of either group. I give the book five stars for satisfying the readers for whom it was intended-it is a painstaking and thoroughly researched book for those two groups mentioned above, whom I think will like it very much. Lastly, I wanted to mention that in the written Elvish script Tolkien seems to have "borrowed" from several other languages including Hebrew. At least one Elvish vowel looks very much like the Hebrew vowel "Segol" ( the "eh" sound) except that he places the dots on top of the consonant and inverts the dots. An interesting history of Tolkien's writing process, however.

It doesn't get better than this if you're interested in Lisp and/or language implementation. You can read this book on a few different levels and get plenty of mileage. First of all, you can look through the features implemented, which are generally progressive in terms of complexity and implementation, and go straight to the topic that interests you the most.I would caution you that this shouldn't be a first book on language implementation. I couldn't enumerate off hand, all of the documents that I've read on the topic - including quite a few that were Lisp specific - and I'd rank this one pretty in terms of difficulty. But the great thing is that the author is methodical about incrementally introducing and explaining the features. That still requires a lot of rumination from me to build the necessary framework inside of my skull.

I love lisp. This book provides even more wetware for my enthusiasm for this niche language.While this book may seem expensive, absorbing even a portion will improve you coding techniques.Good book, good price, seller is A++++++++++

This book is excellent. It is clear but not superficial at all.Queinnec explains from the basics of Lisp implementation (evaluation of S-expressions) to techniques for compiling into C. You will find very good advice on how to implement macros, continuations and higher-order functions. If you want to implement Lisp, Scheme or any other language actually, buy this book!Besides being an excellent technical text, the book is also a great pleasure to read, because of Queinnec's writing style.Also, there are exercises -- with answers! :-)

This book is right up there with SICP and LoL. If you are serious about understanding how Lisp works and why it works that way then this book is one of the best.

Pretty much the only book on how to write a Lisp / Scheme VM - saves months of trolling through online boards...

I don't have much experience with LISP and Scheme, butI enjoy reading that book because the author gives a deepinsight into the inner workings and structure of compilers/interpreters for the whole family of LISP languages and beyond.It's a hard read (at least for me) - mostly because it containstoo much information and you need to follow the code sectionson almost every page (written in Scheme), but it deserves everyhour you'll dedicate to reading it.

This book is fantastic for filling the gap between a SICP-level understanding of how to write a Scheme (or LISP) compiler and actually getting the full language together. You know all of those "almost full R5RS" Scheme-to-{Java,.NET,JS} compilers? This book would help those authors fill in the last few pieces and actually implement the whole language.Where this book falls short is as it approaches final code generation --- after you've generated the first working intermediate representation and want to start producing code you'd actually want to compiler. I recommend Appel's first book (Compiling with Continuations) for some tips on the basic optimization phases required in a functional compiler.

Also at the back of the book, readers find the complete song with written music.What I Like: I LOVE the illustrations! Kadir Nelson is one of my favorites; his work in this volume lives up to my expectations: vibrant, colorful, life-like, expressive ... absolutely striking. Also, the size of the book is great. It's large enough to read over two or three laps. My kids enjoy pointing out their favorite animals and making the appropriate praise noises.What I Dislike: I wish the book included a CD. This is the book I really wanted! I've heard the song done by Celtic Thunder and never knew it was a story until hearing it in church in Juneau, Alaska this summer. A wonder book to read to kids and a great little song too. The book arrived in excellent condition just as it had been described by the seller. *S*

I love children's books. I play in a small musical group, and one of our members brought this little gem to practice for us to read. I loved the illustrations, and the simplicity of the message. I knew that my grandchildren would enjoy the pictures of the animals and the repeating part of the lyric. It also worked well for a children's message that I had to give in church. I bought an MP3 file of the song, and just turned the pages as the lyrics were sung. We had a brief chat about how God made us all unique, because we each had a special purpose in creation. I'd recommend it for people of all ages.

This is a super cute book! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the fold out pages look like the crease is too creased and will probably rip off very soon. I don't this this as a mistake, I just think its a consequence of fold out pages. I will just reinforce them with tape, but I hate to put tape on such a pretty book. It would be better (as some mentioned) if it had a CD with it so we could learn the song. There is piano music, but then you have to be able to play the piano. That being said, I did find this site [...] that has the music and lyrics.

This animated and colorful book is based on the Bill Staines Song from the 1970's "All God's Critters". I sang this as a kid, so was delighted to find it published as a children's book. Kadir Nelson brings the lyrics to life with his delightful collection of animals performing the song on a Broadway-like stage. The words and music are in the back so you can sing the song to your child as you make your way through the book. The important lesson is now each animal, even those who might be less than lovable has something to contribute to nature's choir. My son is 10 months old and since he was 5 months old has always sat still for this book. He likes picking out his favorite characters, turning the pages and clapping with us when we sing "and some just clap their hands, or paws or anything they got, now". It's a great way to read to your child while helping them learn to sing, clap, and identify animals. It was a gift, but even if it hadn't been, we will be keeping it for his memory box.

This is one of our new favorite books. I really wish I could give it more stars somehow. We borrowed this book from the library then ended up buying it on Amazon after two days. I recognized the words from the song we used to sing at camp growing up. Now my almost-3-year-old son loves to sing along as we read. I've even heard him singing it to himself while he's playing. I also love that the music (just the treble clef) is included on the last two pages of the book for those that can read or play music. The illustrations are fun and happy. I can't read it without smiling.

Every child should have access to this song and beautifully joyfully illustrated book that gets the Soul and spirit of the song totally.

What a fun book! The illustrations are gorgeous, the rhyming is fun. It is very enjoyable to read, the pages are not sturdy so I can't let the Grandsons handle it too much. The only thing that would be better is a CD of the song to make it easier to sing along. My 4 year old grandson knows all the words and the tune!

Lying on a grassy patch, the Arctic wind roared around me as the runaway horse, trailing a broken harness, skidded down the rocky incline and disappeared from sight. It took a while to catch my breath. When I sat up, searing pain shot along my left arm, and it was shock enough to knock me flat again. The Vikings found me that way, cradling my arm, cheeks cold and wet from the autumn squall. Sindri, Siggi, and Agnar clustered around. One of them held my taciturn mount. “Come on,” Siggi said gruffly. “Best thing is to get back on the horse.” “Something is wrong with my wrist,” I replied. “It may be hard to stay on.” We were in the glacial highlands, miles from the nearest road. Agnar tossed me into the saddle and led the horse along the steep track while cheerfully recounting how many bones he had broken wrangling Icelandic stallions. Two front teeth, ribs, a shoulder—the same one twice—and a leg. I think he was trying to distract me. No one had told me how hard it was to herd sheep. The same applies for pulling taro corms out of a pond in a Hawaiian valley or fishing with a hand line on a dhow drifting along the coast of East Africa. But, throughout our travels together on several continents, photographer James Fisher and I were lucky enough to see what life is like for people who are firmly rooted in their culture and landscape, in some of our most isolated or marginal communities, where keeping the food chain vital remains a daily chore. Each profile in this book—as well as James’s remarkable images—represents a distinct tradition or practice not often witnessed by outsiders, some of which are millennia old, reaching far back into the collective culinary memory. It took us almost ten years to locate them all; the search involved a lot of knocking on doors, lurking around farmers’ markets, begging invitations, and detouring from more mainstream assignments into what the poet Robert Service called “the map’s void spaces.” Why go? Researchers claim certain people have a variant DNA sequence, specifically identified as DRD4-7r, which has been tied to the traits of curiosity and restlessness. It is sometimes cited as the underlying predisposition for exploration that drove the first humans to migrate out of Africa. Popularly called the wanderlust gene, it’s as likely a rationale as any for why some of us wind up in fringe places, happily poking into kitchens not our own. Many of the following stories also focus on rituals where hospitality plays a key role. A wedding feast. A luau. Afternoon tea with refugees. A boy’s ascension to warrior. Food for the dead. Food for the gods. Being asked to witness, and occasionally participate in, these celebrations was worth the time and effort it took to get there. Some days, it even involved risking our lives. (James fended off a leopard attack in the Maasai Mara—his camera still has the scratches to prove it.) In creating this book, we didn’t fret over an omission of Southeast Asia, or the Middle East, or more easily accessed communities closer to home. Instead of rushing around in an attempt to be geographically inclusive, we got to sit longer in one green valley and watch a quiet man with such a heightened sense of place that he knew exactly where to position a child’s pinwheel to catch an odd little breeze for his own amusement, while everyone else around him was yammering away, oblivious of this exchange with nature. The recipes in Far Afield are souvenirs of this long journey. They are a highly personal reflection of meals shared in the moment. Most are dishes intended for the family table, eaten with the hand where customary, skewered with a worn but favored utility knife, or scooped with a banana leaf from a cooking pot. The occasional meal at a street stall, a dive bar, or a modest restaurant, often the only one around for miles, easily adapted. Comforting food after a hard day’s labor. They are as simple as a scorched chapati smeared with chile paste shared by goatherders on the verge of the Thar Desert in India; as lavish as a birthday asado (barbecue) on the pampas of Uruguay, with a whole lamb roasting on hot coals and wine flowing like a river. You will note the lack of cookies in this book—but there is amazing pie. And doughnuts. Lime pickle that takes over a month to macerate will become a favorite; the okra dish that will convince you to finally appreciate this slimy member of the mallow family; tangy preserves made from wild rhubarb; and some kickass cocktails. A recipe for Peruvian cuy (guinea pig) didn’t make the cut. Neither did a kaiseki dinner at one of Japan’s most venerable ryokans. Umami, that most elusive flavor, so difficult to translate or transport, is occasionally lost somewhere back on the road. “This isn’t how sheep are mustered in Australia.” During the roundup in Iceland, James offered another perspective on what we were experiencing. (He grew up on a sheep station in the Outback, where penned grazing is the norm.) All day we’d sighted one or two animals at a time, skittering away from the shepherds who hunted them through mossy bogs and rain-slick ravines. We only had smoked lamb on flatkökur bread, the local equivalent of peanut-butter-and-jelly, smashed in our pockets. Hunger made me cranky. “Keep hunting,” I said. “There must be a reason for doing it this way.” Eventually, the two of us learned why Icelandic sheep wander the island at will, but not before my arm wound up in a plaster cast and James played drinking games with singing Vikings. Travel should be about expanding your universe, even if that means venturing beyond other people’s comfort zone. (Not everyone has that variant DNA sequence.) If you’ve chosen this book, however, your appetite for the map’s void spaces is just as insatiable. We’re glad to have you along for the ride.

Far Afield is much more than a cookbook + coffee table book. The writing is fantstic, more descriptive than effusive, yet evocative of a moment and place in time â€œfar afield.â€ Itâ€™s as though you are really there. The sights, texture, scents and flavors all described perfectly with the full-page photography. After living in Polynesia when I was younger, I especially enjoyed the chapter on taro farming/farmers in the remote WaipiÊ»o Valley on the Big Island of HawaiÊ»i. The beautiful photos really brought my experiences back to me, and the text was just like how it was when I lived there.The accompanying recipes throughout may require a trip to an ethnic market or an online order, but the flavors are rich and fulfilling, like the goat curry from India, or the Icelandic caramelized potatoes with lamb & mushroom gravy. If National Geographic decided to become a cooking magazine, they could only aspire to such beautiful imagery and writing.
