The Girl Who Fell to Earth: A Memoir, by Sophia Al-Maria

From Booklist

The writer was born in Seattle to an American farm girl and a Bedouin father, and he soon returned to Qatar, where he started a second family. As a young teen, Sophia is on the classic quest to find her father (and herself), and her wry, eloquent narrative does a great job of blending the viewpoints of the 12-year-old then and the adult writer now, while the intersection of contemporary cultures explodes the comfortable stereotypes, old and new. The girl is shocked by backward Bedouin traditions and deep sexual segregation, but she also remembers her American school segregation of jocks, geeks, and freaks, and very clearly by race, and she discovers that love in a culture of arranged marriage and sexual oppression can be “far more complex than anything on MTV.” As the action moves from the Nile delta to Cairo, her commentary gets it exactly right, and without a heavy message. The day was so full of these “exotic” people doing, well, “normal” stuff. Families like hers had the “nouveau” part without the “riche.” Great for reading aloud. --Hazel Rochman

From the Back Cover

When Sophia Al-Maria's mother sends her away from rainy Washington State to stay with her husband's desert-dwelling Bedouin family in Qatar, she intends it to be a sort of teenage cultural boot camp. What her mother doesn't know is that there are some things about growing up that are universal. In Qatar, Sophia is faced with a new world she'd only imagined as a child. She sets out to find her freedom, even in the most unlikely of places. Both family saga and coming-of-age story, The Girl Who Fell to Earth takes readers from the green valleys of the Pacific Northwest to the dunes of the Arabian Gulf and on to the sprawling chaos of Cairo. Struggling to adapt to her nomadic lifestyle, Sophia is haunted by the feeling that she is perpetually in exile: hovering somewhere between two families, two cultures, and two worlds. She must make a place for herself—a complex journey that includes finding young love in the Arabian Gulf, rebellion in Cairo, and, finally, self-discovery in the mountains of Sinai. The Girl Who Fell to Earth heralds the arrival of an electric new talent and takes us on the most personal of quests: the voyage home.

When Sophia Al-Maria's father was a boy his family still lived a traditional Bedouin lifestyle, traveling around the deserts of Qatar and Saudi Arabia and sleeping in tents under skies dark enough to be filled with stars. After being forced by boundary-loving authorities to settle in a gender-segregated family compound her father's wanderlust remained, which is how he ended up in Seattle unable to speak English but still managing to meet and marry an American girl, giving Al-Maria the dual or maybe triple or even quadruple cultural heritage that makes this memoir so mind expandingly and eye openingly interesting.Al-Maria spent part of her childhood in her grandmother's small, isolated house in rural Washington state, where the protective paranoia of her mother made Al-Maria feel more trapped than when she stayed in her father's crowded multi-generational and now stationery home in Qatar. Even though while in Qatar there were substantial cultural and religious restrictions on her ability to move around freely and meet with whomever she wanted, being part of a larger family crowd felt liberating. While she lived in Qatar Al-Maria spent her time getting to know her substantial Bedouin family, attending an international school mainly for foreigners, brawling with her male cousins in the wrong side of their gender divided home because she couldn't stand that being older meant she was no longer able to play Mortal Kombat with them (well, this happened just once), assisting her uncle's carefully choreographed subterfuge as he sneak-courted a non-Bedouin girl unacceptable to their family (which helped her figure out how to spend forbidden time with her boyfriend when she fell in love), and attending rowdy, sexually charged all female parties that seemed to be part of the insular culture of women. Al-Maria also got to experience a little of her traditional Bedouin heritage when the whole family would take off to camp in the desert.Several of Al-Maria's perspectives and insights on hot topics like burka wearing are not what I've encountered anywhere else, and she experienced class divides I knew nothing about. The book presents a fascinating almost disorienting set of interrelated worlds and Al-Maria's vivid energetic writing sweeps the story along, allowing me the deep pleasure of being able to visualize that wide, star-rich desert sky but leaving me hanging a little at the end wondering what she did next. I'm hoping for a follow up book.

Being a Qatari, the book was a bit shocking! The story is fresh and touches the heart, but I'm not convinced of many details that the author highlighted. Her Bedouin Grandma speaks English?! No way! The family was happy to see their son suddenly married to a stranger with two kids? Impossible!Although I can relate to many cultural things she mentioned, I never felt I was immersed in the narrative. Most importantly, I never felt that painful attachment when you finish reading a book, mainly because the end was abrupt and uncreative. You may read it, but don't think of it as your "guide" to the Khaleeji culture, habits or lifestyle. Think of it as the "case study" of Sophia Al-Mariaa and her family because her life is quite unusual.

I felt this was a very interesting and telling tale of a girl struggling to fit into two very different cultures. Living in Qatar, I was able to relate to a bit of what she was experiencing. I found it a very interesting comparison of two very different, yet similar groups of people. One being the Bedu people of Qatar, and the other the "Bedu" (redneck/country) of America. Both have very similar qualities but are worlds apart. We all hear about how rich and extravagant Qatar is, but this book takes you behind the scenes of those Qataris who are barely scrapping by. I do wish the ending had a bit more substance. It felt a bit rushed. I would have liked to know more about her current situation and what happened after Cairo. Also, more of her current relationships between her parents and her Qatari family. The writing style was very good, and it had a nice flow without feeling rushed or unorganized. Overall, I would recommend this book to all memoir readers!

Or perhaps I should say, "an important and beautiful" book.It is important because it tells the tale of growing up between two very different, yet tightly connected, parts of the world. Gulf Arab culture is often stereotyped as either "Rich Oil Baron", "Scheming Terrorist", "Repressed Woman" or "Noble Savage". These cliches are miles away from the truth, which is far more nuanced, detailed and humane. Sadly, such texture gets lost in most contemporary accounts, which can lead to ignorance at best and disastrous misunderstanding at worst.Yet growing up a young person in America is often stereotyped and clichéd, as well. Abercromie and Fitch paint a pretty picture, but the reality of growing up in the States can be far more awkward, anxiety-ridden, and bizarre. "The Girl Who Fell to Earth" brings these two worlds together in a way that is touching, intimate, and true. Both American and Gulf readers would do well by reading this journey of self-discovery and acceptance, which touches on all the most important parts of growing up and experiencing life's many contradictory transitions. It will be particularly resonant for young women growing up in contemporary Gulf society, stretched as they can often be between competing demands and desires. But the book is also beautiful because it does so with humor, tenderness, and bravery. The author does not flinch from sharing some of her most embarrassing moments, yet does so in a way that is relatable and familiar. This is powerful and touching. While the circumstances may be different for each of us, I have no doubt that almost everyone can relate to her tales of growing up and not quite fitting in. It is this very similarity, in worlds that appear so different, that gives this book its power."The Girl Who Fell to Earth" is wonderfully written; I literally couldn't put it down after starting it. I can't recommend it highly enough, but those growing up in or around Gulf / American cultures will find it particularly moving.

"The Voyage of the Dawn treader" may be my favorite book in the "Chronicles of Narnia". Many of the other reviewers have made comparisons, however I see it a little differently. I am reminded of Swift's "Gulliver's travels" and its imagination and satire. Obviously, the Lewis has updated the satire and changed aspects of the story - but both have the same sense of adventure. Another added bonus to "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is the humor. Several of the chapters are very, very funny. The land "of the invisible people" comes to mind as an especially funny section. In truth, Lewis has included all of the ingredients for a fine novel, humor, high adventure, coming of age, and moral decisions. The plot is nicely woven together and doesn't seem to jump as much as "Prince Caspian" and some of the others, so in my opinion "Voyage" may also be the best written of the books in the series.Final tally- Humor "A"Adventure "A"Writing style "B+"Overall - "A" - a very solid read and sure to be one of your child's favorites!

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (text only) by C. S. Lewis,P. Baynes I bought this copy because for one, I personally did not want a "movie tie-in" version, I wanted to have a hardcover edition that contained all of the books in one that I could keep for years and pass down to my children - in short, good quality, tasteful, with pictures. It was described as being "Used - Good", but it arrived in excellent condition (no noticeable tears on the book itself with only slight page wear). This version came with a book jacket which is identical to the hard cover itself, so I threw away the jacket which was well worn. Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon).I feel like I hit the jackpot with this purchase and I highly encourage everyone to get this copy ASAP, because I've noticed the price of the "all-in-one" books skyrocketing lately (Barnes and Noble used to have a "leather"-bound copy for $20 three years ago which is $100 now). I sure hope these books don't go out of print, but if they do, you'll be glad you purchased this particular version, because it'll be passed down the family.

This is a beautiful paperback box set of the Narnia collection, that so many of us grew up with. The covers are nice, thick and protective of the pages inside, which are of good paper stock. I have no print fading or errors that I've noticed. The art on the outter box is beautiful on all sides, with a little read up at the top. For paperbacks, I believe this is the way to go! Highly recommended!

This is a really lovely storybook collection based on all seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Those include: “The Magician's Nephew”, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair”, and “The Last Battle”. As the coloring book is slightly longer than average size and there are seven books covered, each is only touched on lightly. The coloring book can be used as an fun addition while you are reading the stories but it does not replace them. The designs are based on the original artwork by Pauline Baynes from the books written and published in the 1950's. In some cases, the artwork has been turned into what I call “wallpaper” style designs with repeated patterns. The designs include considerably more black in shading than usual for coloring books. That is because the original artwork was just that – artwork and not coloring designs. I've found that utilizing the black as shading is what works best for me with this type of design. I've run across it before when original artwork has been presented in this format. On a personal note, the designs bring back memories from my own life. I was a big fan of these books as a child and I would read them over and over again. Once I had children, I would read books to them before bedtime each night and this was a favorite, especially of my late son. He also would read the books over and over again on his own.I am now looking forward to reading them to my grandchildren and I will now also have a book of designs that I have colored to go along with them. I will admit that coloring these designs is a bittersweet experience as I spend as much time thinking of my son as I do in coloring. This is what I found as I colored in this book and tested the paper with my coloring medium. I'll include a list of my coloring medium, which I use for tests and for coloring, in the comments section below.96 pages of Designs based on original artwork from “The Chronicles of Narnia”Printed on both sides of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth and non-perforatedGlue BoundMany Designs merge into the binding areaSome designs spread across two pages with integral parts merging into the binding areaAlcohol-based markers bleed through this paperWater-based markers, gel pens, and India ink pens do not bleed through the page.Colored pencils worked well with the paper. I was able to get good color with multiple layers of the same shade. I was also able to layer multiple colors and blend well using a pencil style blending stick. Both oil and wax based pencils worked well.

Love these books, but the font size is much too small on the Narnia Box Set (with movie pictures on box, linked below). It is advertised as for Grade 3 and up, but likely only Jr. High and older would be comfortable with this small of a Font Size. We are surprised that Harper Collins would publish such a small text Font Size, knowing that many children would be their audience.***It would be very helpful if Amazon would include the Font Size in the product description for books and other literature.*** (Surprised that they don't already include this.)Chronicles of Narnia Box SetWe are sending this box set back regrettably, and instead ordering this 2000-published box set, which is a couple inches taller, hoping it has an adequate font size for young readers (link below). It costs $8 more, but should hopefully be the solution we need for the too-small font. The Chronicles of Narnia Box Set: Full-Color Collector's Edition

WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS COPY. I ordered this book to read more on Engels' philosophy and, first of all, the publishing is atrocious. Pages are not numbered and the book looks like it was printed on computer paper from Microsoft Word. But here's the kicker: right in the middle of the book is a 12 page fundamentalist and homophobic christian pamphlet titled "The Marriage Bed - Can the Marriage Bed be Defiled?" In this excerpt (which Amazon did manage to number the pages!), the author goes on and on about "fornication", "unnatural acts", and even compares "sodimites" (referring to LGBTQ people) to dogs. Shame on you Amazon. One purchases a book with the reasonable expectation that you are receiving just that product, not an anti-gay pamphlet literally printed within the book. This is doubly offensive because I am a gay man. I will avoid Amazon's in-house publishing from here on out and stick with more reputable publishers.

This little book is the most concise summary of the ideas of Socialism that I have found so far. Engels does a brilliant job in laying out an outline of the evolution of capitalism from feudalism through the guild system to the industrial revolution. He also describes the evolution of thought as practiced by the Ancient Greeks into the dialectic of Hegel, which made thinking about processes and change possible and, consequently, the evolution of Socialist theory. The burning question in my mind with regard to Socialist theory has been, "How exactly will social ownership and control of the means of production create a fairer distribution of wealth and capital?" Unfortunately, this question remains unanswered. Control of capital cannot in and of itself provide the knowledge of the behavior of markets necessary to predict and control them for the good of all. The recent failure of the Federal Reserve and other worldwide central banking, using interest rates, to control the inevitable boom-and-bust economic cycles points up this flaw in capitalism, and no Socialist answer appears in this book either.

Engels provides a history of Socialism before Marx explaining the groundwork set out by the likes of Saint Simon & Robert Owen and the push of a more scientific form of socialism spearheaded by Marx. This book is basically a call to us and future generations not to deify Marx & Engels but to learn from them and their predecessors & to look at today in order make a new socialism, one that would benefit our needs and desires & the needs & desires of nature.

Excellent seller! The book also provides informative insight into what socialism really is. I highly recommend this to anybody with a philosophical mind!It will only strengthen your knowledge of the human condition, and broaden your understanding of Social democracy.

Or if you’re already a Socialist this a highly recommended read.If you rather listen to the audiobook then LibriVox has it for free.

This particular print of Engels's work is riddled with typos. Marx and Engels are both very influential thinkers of the 19th Century and I feel these typos serve a disservice to the Engels's work. I liked the substance of the book but the typos were annoying.

Classic. For everybody who wants to change the world.

this explains Why Socialism came about and how !

Rescued is the 17th Andy Carpenter mystery and another winner for sure. Even though it’s a mystery, there is laugh out loud humor throughout this imaginative book. I have read and loved all the books in the series but I’m sure you can jump right into this one and have an enjoyable read. Loved it.

Reading an Andy Carpenter Mystery is a lot like eating a box of delicious chocolates. You tell yourself to go slow, and to savior. Butbefore you know it, you have lost all control, and are gobbling the chocolates with both hands. This is a good read: all my favoritecharacters are present:Andy, Laurie, Hike, Sam, Edna, Marcus, Willie, Pete, Vince, and the Bubalah Brigade. And of course, for Wagsthere is Tara and Sebastian and sixty-one assorted rescues.

I just love the Andy Carpenter books. I would like if one came out a week! No pressure!! The characters are so life like. And the stories are interesting and complex. Being from New Jersey, I identify with the venues and with the excellent narrator’s accent. Not that you have to be from New Jersey to enjoy the books; but it brings another element for me.

I love the Andy Carpenter series, and drag my reading through the books because I hate to have them end. This story was really exciting, with a complicated plot made up of several threads which Mr. Rosenfelt wove together in an intricate and wonderful story. It's so much fun seeing the characters again. Only complaint: Can't the books be longer??

I love all the characters and I've really become invested in them. As soon as I see a new one released, I buy it and read it the same day! Then I pray that David is working hard to ring us the next one. I highly recommend it!

I loved "Rescued" -- Andy Carpenter is a great protagonist and David Rosenfelt has set up another "whodunit" with Andy rescuing the dogs and finding the bad guys. I love the characters in this series and Rescued delivers another set of great characters, some returning from the previous books (I love the Bubalah Brigade) and some (especially the bad guys) new to this story. Well worth the read!

Perfect combination - intrigue and humor! Mr. Rosenfelt is an expert weaver of characters committing crime and our favorite sleuths to solve it. I have read most of his books and each is a very enjoyable read without the nightmarish scenarios. And I am sure his favorite pooches help unlock the mystery during their walks. Enjoy!

I have read most of the Andy Carpenter series and have really enjoyed, them, especially as I come from the area in which these stories take place. I especially enjoyed this one, just a really good read, kept my interest throughout. I also listened to the audiobook, which was great with the talent of Grover Gardner. Definitely recommend this book!

This was pretty slow and dry in places but still an interesting story. I came to know and like Otto, the main character, and though some of his escapades and narrow escapes were rather hard to believe, it was still interesting to read about a relatively unknown part of Austria’s history.I have to say I learned a lot about the Austria/Hungary dynasty that I’d never heard before. I recommend it for that, if nothing else. Just know that it is a little dry and dull in places, but they’re easy enough to skim over. The descriptions of submarine actions were well written and made me feel what submarine warfare was really like. It makes me think of the old German language movie, “Das Boot.” Definitely not the life for me!By the way, I didn’t notice any formatting errors in my Kindle version like some have mentioned in the past so evidently they’ve got all those bugs worked out now.

As a student I had no interest in history, staying awake through the class was success. 40-some years later a very good friend of mine, who, as long as I had known him WAS a history buff, spent several days touring Civil War battle fields with me brought a whole new view if history to me.Today I find history an interesting topic and must admit to being ALMOST an addict, certainly a "buff".I rank this well told story second only to the presentation that opened my eyes those years ago and LOUDLY proclaim it to be a MUST READ to history buffs AND to those who have not yet discovered history to be something more than merely a class.Thank you for a most enjoyable trip through a period of history with a well told story and a view of its impact on the lives of those who experienced it.

Wait, landlocked Austria had a navy? Why, yes it did, back when it was an Empire. This historical novel details the adventures of World War I submarine captain Otto Prohaska as he witnesses the birth of submarine warfare and the death of that Empire. Like Thomas Berger in the classic Little Big Man, John Biggins has Prohaska turning the sardonic eye of age on that period as he tells his story to an interested caregiver in the present-day nursing home where he's spending his last days. It's amusing and filled with interesting historical detail. For example, Prohaska tells us, the earliest subs ran on the surface on petrol engines, which leaked so badly that sailors had to watch each other for signs of madness caused by inhaling the fumes. If the book has one weakness, it's a lack of a single strong plot. Instead the book is a series of anecdotes, taking Prohaska to the end of the war and the rapid disintegration of his country. (I don't think this is a spoiler, since we all kind of know there's no Austro-Hungarian Empire any more). Needless to say, the ending is a bit depressing, but the journey's a lot of fun. Recommended.

I particularly enjoyed reading this novel because I am a fan of history from The Great War, which set the stage for much of what is going on today throughout the world. Biggins tells an entirely convincing tale and for the most part it is factually accurate (except for having an imaginary protagonist commanding a boat with a notional U designation) as to the historical events and places described. He has even included a handy reference showing the current names and countries that he mentions - using their old names - in the story. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys military history and historical fiction!Edit: I forgot to mention that Mr. Biggins has written a few more novels featuring this novel's protagonist that I intend to read soon.

My grandfather was a man who--though I was in his company a number of times when I was a boy--never spoke of his experiences in France where he had fought as a doughboy in the trenches of WWI. I thought of him as I read this book, wishing he were still alive so I could ask him about it. This book, to me, is a story of multiculturalism run amok. It's protagonist spoke seven of the eleven official languages of the Hapsburg empire. How it ever hung together as well as it did baffles me. Why anyone was willing to fight, let alone die for this chimera of a country remains the chief mystery of the book to me. Anyway, I enjoyed it. The final pages were moving and sad, as the narrator approaches his one hundred and first birthday, and the scenes and ghosts of his soon to be all but forgotten life revisit him.

I have just finished re-reading* the four book series on Otto Prohaska by John Biggins:* A Sailor of Austria (1991)* The Emperor's Coloured Coat* The Two-Headed Eagle* Tomorrow The WorldThis is an excellent historical fiction series laid in the last years of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The hero is a naval officer (surface, submarines, air) who was a contemporary of the real Georg von Trapp (an actual naval officer who won Austria-Hungary’s highest honor in addition to becoming the head of the “Sound of Music” story. This series strongly echos a similar, perhaps even better series, the George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman books. Both series are strongly recommended!* this time in chronological order rather than publication order

A fictional memoir of the captain of an Austro-Hungarian Navy submarine during World War I, as he and his crew ply the Adriatic, battling bureaucracy, boredom, leaky hulls, and the occasional enemy ship. It's extraordinarily well-written with great humor and suspense, without ever being farcical, and so detailed in its account of every aspect of life and war above and below the surface that it's hard to believe the author didn't live through it himself (he's too young to have done so). It was hard to put this one down, while at the same time I learned a lot about an unknown (to me) aspect of the Great War and its fighting men.

First World War naval fiction is scarce. First World War naval fiction dealing with the Austro-Hungarian Empire? Unheard of! Biggins covers the rather tragic efforts of a naval officer of the Hapsburg Empire to fight the Allies - and the cranky bureaucracy of a truly dysfunctional state. An excellent read, and well researched. Highly recommended.

Book received was used, but like new, with very minimal sign of wear. I purchased this book for a journalism class which reference the book quite often. It is a great resource to introduce you to the fundamentals of graphic design, and is done in such a way that will age well as technology advances. The principles outlined are not specific to a certain time, and will be just as helpful a few years down the road as it is today. My only disappointment was, shortly after ordering I found the book available for free as a pdf online. Had I know that I probably wouldn't have purchased the book, but I decided to keep it as I like having a hard copy for study materials.

Overall, the text of this book is good, but the design and examples contradict it. Just look at the cover--there's hardly any white space! The example designs are very busy and don't lead the eye well. They make it hard to learn what they're teaching. Even the text, which in general is good, has grammar mistakes that distract from their message. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who is trying to develop a design sense since it is a little misleading. It's too bad, this could've been a good book.

I bought this book to break down a beginning graphic design course that I will be teaching. The outline of the book is smart, the right order and good beginning materials to cover. Someone somewhere commented that the old cover of the earlier edition made more sense. This cover has no real white space! It's nothing really. The inside layout is better and much improved and more "user friendly"= readability - from the older edition. Great book, I'll be keeping my eye on the authors for future works.

There are some interesting practical tips, but this book is not for beginners. It glosses over the principles of good design, and it contains a trite list of what not to do. I found the advice rather vague--a lot of "don't do this" without many tips or examples of what TO DO to fix common issues. "Use your judgement" is not helpful advice. Also, in case you're not sure what book you're reading, the text will frequently remind you: white space is not your enemy (in italics). For beginners, I recommend reading The Non-Designer's Design Book for a firm foundation on the core principles of alignment, proximity, repetition, and contrast. WSINYE might be useful for intermediate designers and web developers or freelancers who are looking for professional production tips.

I had to get this book for a Graphic Design course I was taking. First thing I'll say about this book? What a great price! Good change from all those hundred dollar textbooks I always dread to buy. Some say that price is an indication of the level of information provided. True, but it isn't always a terrible thing. This book is geared towards those who are beginners, and I should know I was a complete beginner in this topic! The chapters are organized so they build upon the knowledge you gain from the previous one, however if one were to skip ahead you won't be lost. I'm sure you can start from the end, but that takes the fun away from starting at chapter one. This book teaches you the do's and don't's when creating designs. Starting with the mistakes every beginner will most likely make, duh. While you won't be creating some professional looking brochures or posters, you will have knowledge of what makes a design pleasing to an audience. There are several devices it presents that are useful and can be built upon should you proceed in that direction. I like to look back at the book too, I usually just skim the pages. The images themselves are nice to look at and can get those creative juices flowing. And always remember that white space isn't your enemy.

Books like this is so crucial for artists, it's even required to understand how and why layouts are constructed. The fundamentals of why it's important to not cram everything together, and leaving s-p-a-c-e as is, too. Some of the worst things in web design, for example, is what is considered logically placed by creators, yet isn't. You see it at countless websites, it looks e-v-e-r-y bit like a programmer made the site. He's proud of his ability to code everything right, it even has function, but the site is hard to read, text doesn't flow and is cramped, and god forbid if he placed those freaking ads himself. In short: It's an eye sore. This book aids you in appreciating the dos and don'ts in working with white space. How to use it to your advantage. Element positioning and grouping using the grid system, for example. It's not going to make you an expert (advanced techniques aren't covered as the book is a beginner's guide, especially with typography which is another field in itself that is used in conjunction with layouts), but it will give you an idea how it's done, why and to the point you won't fear leaving some space left u-n-u-s-e-d, too (something really difficult to do with limited real estate to work with, and why books like this help).A definite book on your reference shelf, be it artists, programmers and/or website owners.

As someone who was helped tremendously by Robert Schwartz's insightful first book, Your Soul's Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born, I was eager to read his second book.My life was dramatically changed by the words that came through mediums and channels in Schwartz's first book. As a bereaved mom, my son's death shook my world to a place I could not imagine. I searched for over ten years for meaning and purpose to Scott's sudden death. In the chapter titled Death of a Loved One in Schwartz's first book, I instantly connected with the mom who was in deep grief over the loss of her son. Our children died in different ways, but the message of soul planning came through to me as a beacon of light. I was able to move through my grief to much greater understanding and trust that the deaths of our loved ones are never random.Your Soul's Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born continues beyond Robert Schwartz's amazing first book. Here Schwartz brings more insights to us, insights that help us regain our strength and our knowing of who we are following devastating, life-changing experiences. The need to understand who we are, WHY an experience needs to be so completely all-encompassing, and why we are here flows through each chapter. Understanding that we plan our lives before we are born is somewhat abstract for many, but for me it opened up much needed, revolutionary ways of thinking. We plan our lives before we are born? Yes! Schwartz has gone beyond his first book by going into some of the most difficult and debilitating challenges anyone can experience in a lifetime. Suicide, miscarriage, rape, incest, adoption, and more open up the real meaning of soul planning. WHY would anyone plan such challenges? Each person Schwartz studied confronted their challenges so that we could learn more about their pre-birth planning. This allows us to see beyond--way beyond--what conventional thinking offers us and brings much more meaning into why we plan our lives...and we all do.

NEVER BEFORE have I read about people with so much tragedy in life LIKE ME, I resonated with EVERY chapter! And this book - as a collection of different topics to address - has brought me TREMENDOUS HEALING like I have never gone through before! THANK YOU!Just for info: I have been very traumatised by my childhood, since my very poor parents with extremely low self-esteem were born during the massacres of the World War II, father was in an orphanage as a baby, mother experienced the era of nationalization (property was taken away from people by the communist state), AND - on top of that - I planned to be conceived 4 days after my sister was murdered. So all my time in my mom's belly I experienced her madness from her unbearable fear of more unexpected violence, and then I could not get my parent's love or attention, because they have been absolutely consumed by the grief, guilt and the mutual fight whose fault the murder has been. So I literally grew up in everyday verbal and physical abuse, with no boundaries, all kinds of phobias, and total insecurity in every aspect of my life.BUT NOW I AM GRATEFUL :-) It has been a great experiment, huge learning, and I wish to use it all in my private healing practice in near future.

In Your Soul's Gift, Robert Schwartz enlightens and inspires us with the rich, clear, and profound information his research has created.Schwartz interviews individuals who experienced a variety of life challenges, and he recounts their stories with tenderness. He then investigates their pre-birth plans with four exceptional mediums and channels, asking questions of the mediums and Spirit that the reader might ask if given the opportunity. In one session, for example, Schwartz is speaking with Jeshua (Jesus' given Hebrew name, pronounced "Yeshua") about how and why so many of us are awakening at this time in human evolution. He queries: "Jeshua, when something `bad' happens, particularly if the same thing happens more than once in a person's life . . . a spiritually awake person will take some comfort in the fact that the experience may have been planned before birth, but still the person wonders, `Why does this keep happening to me?' What would you say to that person?"Jeshua responds: "If certain challenges happen again and again in someone's life, there is something there that the soul deeply yearns to understand or live through. It's very courageous of the soul and the personality to decide to experience this challenge repeatedly. It's important that the personality does not think it is doing something wrong or that it is being punished for something if the challenge repeats itself . . . It is important simply to know there is meaning behind it, even if you do not understand yet what it is."The author beautifully interpreted this lesson about knowing as: "Trust is literally a carrier of light, and as light infuses our consciousness, we awaken. When we believe there is meaning in our challenges, we are demonstrating some trust in the goodness of life. Yet, when we choose to know there is meaning, we are deeply and truly trusting in that beneficence. It is then that we fully accept the light of our souls and awaken."Robert Schwartz writes with compassion and empathy. He gently invites readers to view pre-birth agreements, healing, soul plans, past lives, free will, death, and life challenges through the captivating and insightful stories he researched. Schwartz is a clear-thinking, articulate individual with a big and awakened heart, who is committed to enlightening and inspiring others. He invites readers on a journey of a collective spiritual awakening.Spiritual leaders encourage us to set intentions for greater physical health, emotional well-being, expanded awareness, wisdom, peace, and joy. Schwartz reveals a means to these ends. He invites us to explore our thinking and become conscious of our life choices. Your Soul's Gift is a compendium of wisdom and insights that help us understand our life challenges and live a life that has meaning and purpose.I will never look at life the same. If you have questions about the relationships in your life, why you must bear difficult life situations, or how you can accept life challenges, this book will open your eyes to a new perspective. Your Soul's Gift deepened my understanding of and solidified my truth about one of the great mysteries of life. I highly recommend this book.
