I've always loved Jorma's music and he brings it to life here, with his family's cultural, professional and educational history, Jack Casady and part of the Airplane story coming to life. Actually, it's more about the former and the Tuna work than the 'on the road' details or Airplane track by track, concert by concert stuff - which is fine, since this is a more accurate reflection of his art and experience. The Airplane stuff is almost secondary - fair enough. He also is honest and clear-eyed about his typical rock trials of drugs, alcohol and rehab. It's very detailed and specific, but - and this didn't strike me until I started feeling a bit overwhelmed and disinterested midway through - it's strongly distanced and unemotional about whole tale. Fair enough - but not a great read, even for a musical fan.

Fans of Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna and the 60s San Francisco scene will be left yearning for more - this memoire doesn't offer up a lot of insider anecdotes or tales of iconic events, just cursory 'I was there' type of reflections - it's really more of one man's sonewhat wistful, melancholic jog down memory lane. Nothing much about Grace Slick or all those iconic characters - it's really Kaukonen's family history, his childhood, and not much about what we fans were hoping for - but it IS his story and he had every right to tell it as he saw fit. I'd be lying if I said I was satisfied with this memoire. I skipped over the pages and pages of car/motorcycle talk - haha.

Really a far more boring read than the subject matter might indicate. Jorma could have used a solid editor/co writer as the book doesn't flow well, his reflections are repetitive, and there are many missed opportunities to add clarifying information or insights. Would have been nice to have more photos and what about some pics of Margareta's art? And beyond his many statements about his 'best friend Jack' he doesn't at all describe Jack's deep musical contributions. Wow. Really?He gives much credit to his wife Vanessa, and is clearly at a good place in his life, something he more than deserves as a pivotal figure in American music. And true to his roots, you'll find spends plenty of time playing the songs he loves and teaching others.The story is his own and here it it. Unlike some tomes from my favorite 60s musicians, I won't be reading this twice.

Jorma (Jerry), thank you for sharing. The honesty and courage to face yours fears, to pass along failures and successes, to publicly describe emotions “normal” people would deny is inspiring. Others have written surface stories about the times, the revolution, the people, the events. You have written about the struggle to fit in, to be yourself, to exist in a conflicted world. Thank you for your music. For my selfish reasons, I am glad you were here long enough for me to see you in a solo concert.

Jorma Kaukonen is best known for the music he created with the Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, among others and his collection of solo performances available on CD. This book goes beyond the music which teases always in the background and crosses into real life beginning in the 1950's to present day. Mr. Kaukonen shares his diary entries, his lyrics, poetry, musings on life and even his music with a CD included in the back of the book. It is his life story, the adventures, the challenges, the success and the failures that he does not gleam over but honestly puts out there for all to see. The confessions of St. Augustine or Rousseau pale over some of the life lessons that Kaukonen shares with his readers. There is also the history of the music that starts in his high school years with Jack Cassady to college where he met Janis Joplin, Paul Kantner, David Freiberg and many other people that come and go in his life same as people come and go in all of our lives. He takes us through the years of the Airplane and Hot Tune, from start to finish and all the bands and people in between. He shares with us the words of his Grandfather in a letter he only discovered recently that impacts him greatly. Kaukonen reminisces with his and Cassidy's last dinner with Paul Kantner in San Francisco and how lives long road twists and turns for all of us. Many people will be able to relate to the trials and tribulations Mr Kaukonen has faced as many if not all of those we too have journeyed down. People will be able to relate to this book in their own personal life journey. But it does not end there. His voyage continues with his Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio and his music and touring. People might want to clip the recent newspaper story of his reflections when told Marty Balin had passed as it is a continuation of the Saga depicted by his book. A wonderful read and history of a time that gets short shifted and twisted by many but not by Jorma Kaukonen. Buy this book and listen to the music.

A thorough & honest memoir from a charming & humble man. As a big fan of both Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, I pre-ordered this as soon as it was available.

I found Jorma's work boring. Where are the Airplane stories? How many drunk stories do we have to endure. What about Jack Cassidy? He receives short shrift.I had high expectations, but I would sell the book for $1.00 if offered.LL

I always respected Jorma as a musician and after reading his book it only strengthens that respect. I remember hearing “Yellow Fever” by Hot Tuna on the Skidmore College radio station years ago and I RAN out to buy the album. This book started me on a spree of finding CD’s by Jorma & JA that I didn’t already have. Support Jorma by doing the same!I also loved bonus CD included in the book!That you Jorma!!!!!!!

This is a breezily readable, generously and eclectically illustrated book, packed with personal, practical and historical revelations and observations that paradoxically don't really add up to anything.But wait: that may very well be the point.First the good stuff. There are many, many pages here that are worth the purchase price: a photo of the model for the Disney Concert Hall that won the 1988 competition and that looks nothing like the finished building, another photo of what the Disney Concert Hall would have looked like had it been clad in travertine as was the original plan, Gehry's stories about surviving the Army and Harvard, Philip Johnson's assessment of the Bilbao Guggenheim, Gehry's practice of leaving building models outside for a year to see what they'll look like in the changing light of the seasons--and many more. I don't want to spoil all of them.Here's what isn't here: any singular philosophy or manifesto, anything admonishing or inspirational, any broad program or narrow purpose. Passed this book around to all the young people in our family, and currently not sure which family has it. That is, AFTER we read it together in the car on a road trip. Awesome book, can't hardly put it down. If you want to get your kids reading, force them to read the first chapter and you won't see them until they've finished. :)

The flashbacks really helped you understand more about the story and characters. Loved how the characters are all connected like in a spiderweb.

I finally decided to check this book out after years of watching the movie. I'm so happy I did, because it's way better than the film (as is usually the case), which is saying something. I won't give anything away with regards to the plot, but I'll say this much - I highly recommend it not just for young adults, but for us older adults as well. ;)

The author did a fantastic job of weaving the past and present together and bringing everything full circle in this book in a way that even young children could understand. It could have easily gotten very complicated and convoluted but he managed to make it intricate yet understandable. My second grader read this book on his own and figured it all out. I read this book aloud to my first grader which worked out nicely because I could discuss it with him as we went along and make sure he understood it. Most of the time he did on his own and he always did after we had a conversation.Both my boys can be sensitive to darker plots and humor but they both really enjoyed this book - it wasn't too much for them. It's recommended for third grade and up but I found it appropriate for my first and second grader. The only mildly inappropriate instance is when one character says, "What the hell?" I didn't even notice when I was reading it but my first grader was quick to point out at our book club meeting that it was his favorite part - because of the "bad" word. Such a proud parenting moment.Speaking of book club, this was a great selection for the Intergenerational Book Club (IGBC) at my church. There were kids from first through fifth grade (mostly boys) and all of them enjoyed this book. For snacks we had worms and dirt (made by the kids), doughnut holes, and pumpkin onion cookies. (Onions play an important role in the story.)

Stanley is a school boy who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is convicted of stealing shoes and sent to correctional camp Green Lake. Camp Green lake is by the side of a dried up lake in the middle of a desert. Escape seems impossible because there is no food or water. The life is tough. Each day the boys have to dig a hole 5 foot deep and 5 foot wide measured by the shovel. The book has a good ending but you need to read the book to find out what happens. You won’t be disappointed. After each chapter you will not want to put the book down. There is another story running parallel telling the events at Green lake 110 years before which tie into the main story.The book is not lengthy and easy to read. Good characters well described. Well written. Not boring. Recommended for all teenagers. Adults can enjoy. I read the book because my son is reading it at school.

Such a good book. All three of my kids read this in middle school and I've read it myself. It has mystery to keep you entertained and the main characters are great examples of good triumphing over evil. If you want a book that is a fun and a fast, read plus is really easy to write an A+ book report on, then choose this book.

Wow, what a book. It's listed for middle-grade, but it really is an adventure that adults could enjoy too. The fascinating aspect for adults is the idea of the story in the first place and how this idea allows the reader to understand characters.

This is a very enjoyable book. I think it is geared for youthful readers. As a parent I would have no problem having my middle school children reading this book. There is no obscene or inappropriate language. The reason I read this book is that it is a selection of my book club. I am not sure exactly why it is a selection as my book club is mostly senior citizens and no very young members.The book itself is not lengthy. Many of the chapters are somewhat short and seems to me to be a fairly easy read. There is a lot of interesting coincidences that occur within the story in order to facilitate the story line. If this was serious adult fiction I would find the story not credible. However I think it makes a great story for youth. I would call it a version of a morality story. There are lessons in bullying, injustice, loyalty, selflessness, perseverance, etc... In the event that a reader from middle school to early adult read this book and liked it and wished to try a slightly more advanced reads that is still appropriate for a young adults, I respectfully submit "Girl, Stolen" by April Henry, and "Girls Like Us" by Gail Giles for consideration.In summary it was a pleasant, easy read. In the event that a parent might be looking for a lesser known book from an earlier time, I recently came upon a relatively short novel, "Understood Betsy" by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. It is set in the early twentieth century in rural Vermont and is probably more for little girls. The book is not long, although some of the chapters are slightly long. Another book from an earlier time that I came upon is "The Boxcar Children" by Gertrude Chandler Warner, which may be for slightly younger children. Thank You...

Right out of the gate let me say this: I bought this book as a sort of joke. Come on, the title and subject are kinda funny. I'm sure the author won't take offense at this. After all, I bought the book and she gets a royalty. Win-win. In my family, when Dad here has to cook a meal, if I can't get a family buy-in on what to make my response is always: "OK, everyone gets a sardine and a saltine." That usually sparks a quick buy-in on something.I grew up eating sardines. Almost always as a sandwich, on crackers, but occasionally straight out of the can, as is. (OK, sort of. I always take the bones out.) My Dad was the editor and writer for an outdoors sports (Hunting, fishing, whatever...) magazine and he always kept a couple of cans in his vehicle in case he got caught out in the boonies and needed something to eat. When he "rotated his stock" I'd join him and learned to tolerate them, if not love them. I ate them as a teen while backpacking. Triscuits were always my choice on this menu itemFast forward a few years when I was a college student - before the days of Ramen, Pell grants and student loans. I was relatively poor, attending a college in a rural area with somewhat limited grocery options and I needed cheap food. I ate sardine sandwiches a couple of times a week and was mighty glad to have them. (Just keep breath mints handy.) I can't honestly say I ever craved them, but I liked them enough to keep eating them.The author makes a pretty good case on why you should at least try them. Alas, I'm afraid she won't convince anyone who need convincing about that. Sardines are the Brussels sprouts of the protein world. You tolerate 'em or you hate 'em. The difference is how open your mind and how they're presented. I'd say give 'em a try. Either as a sandwich, or with recipes in the book. (Or if you're really adventurous straight out of the can.) She might just change your mind.Funny fact: Mom would never let Dad and I eat them in the house because of the smell. To this day (I'm 60), I never have.

I've always read how fantastically healthy sardines are. This book has convinced me at last to give them an honest effort with an open mind. Also given are ways to eat them that make it easier to take the plunge.

This book was a great start on the road of consuming sardines on a regular basis. Thank you. I loved it.

This is a short book that make the case for adding sardines to one's diet. It does lack detail and background which was a disappointment.

The book is short and to the point. If it gets you to try sardines then its worth every penny because your on your way to a healthy lifestyle.

Save your money, unless you think spending a few dollars for a pamphlet of recipes that explain how to eat Sardines from a can (with a fork or a napkin) or serving them on crackers is worthwhile. One of the more complex recipes suggests putting them in a vinaigrette. Frankly, I think most consumers have a handle on how to do those things. None of the few paragraphs of "copy" is anything beyond common knowledge. It is never fun to feel "ripped off", to save yourself feeling the same; AVOID this item!

Love this concept and am reading this book carefully in order to plan my own edible garden (a rehab of a nice but kind of boring ornamental one). Solid information in a useful format. Seems like it's aimed at people with no gardening experience to moderate gardening experience-- which is just my demographic so it's a good level for me. Definitely recommend it-- will try to review properly when I'm finished reading.

Brie is such a great motivational speaker I knew her book would not disappoint. Although I did a mini version of foodscaping many years ago as a 20 sonething with a new townhouse, my methods were haphazard. I love the zone system Brie explains. Its practical and so easy. I ve started with arugula and lettuce near our front door and will expand as it warms up here in the NC mountains. Her photographs are beautiful as well. Her book is a great gift for gardening friends and family.my husband Gary ordered Brie's book for me so his name is listed but I am the reader/ gardener.Shirley Phillips

Not all of it applies to everywhere everyone lives but it's a good general guideline book. I was hoping to read about beneficial nematodes but couldn't find anything on them since the author deals with a former tobacco farm and only had destructive nematodes. We also make our own earthworm compost in bins, we never have it trucked in, that way we'll know what's in it. I do suggest this book.

I first heard about the book when I had the privilege of meeting Brie at a foodscaping conference and immediately ordered a presale copy. I'm so glad I did because since receiving my book it's been so useful in helping me grow edibles among my established suburban yard! I love all the colorful photos especially the ones Brie included of her own yard.

In a suburban garden, why not incorporate form with function? Your spot of heaven on earth can produce beauty and fresh home-grown herbs, vegetables, fruits and herbs. Brie Arthur's book, "Foodscape Revolution" provides the map to cleverly add bonus food plants in with your blooming beauty queen ornamental's, "how-to" garden hints and tips, recipes, party plan ideas for mature crops and more. I have soooo many page flags inserted in my copy. At the end of the book you just wish you were neighbors with Brie Arthur. Great book to read, reference and find garden inspiration!p.s. follow Brie on Facebook too - I love and learn so much by reading her weekly posts.

This is a fabulous book with great tidbits on growing food in any landscape, including suburban HOA situations. Include food and beauty into your landscape. It is packed full of great info and great resources. I highly recommend this book for anyone who EATS FOOD!

I saw the author on a gardening show and was impressed with her there, so bought the book. It has lots of great advice about how to fit edible plants into your flower borders and landscaping. Even though we live in very different plant hardiness zones, her advice will still work for me. A few of the plants she recommends will not grow in eastern Canada, but most of them will. I can hardly wait for spring so I can get started planting veggies in with my flowers and replacing my boring foundation plantings with berry bushes.

I got this book the first day it came out. Great book, easy read, informative. I plan on using some of the ideas this summer!
