An interesting book but not especially well written or organized and therefore rather hard to read. However, I found that once I got into the book, I wanted to struggle to the end since the material discussed is quite engrossing. I can recommend the book with reservations to anyone who is interested in the piano and how it evolved and carried romantic music with it. Chopin’s life is relevant to this as perhaps the supreme “poet of the piano”.

I loved all the details about Chopin's actual life, and the fascinating saga of the modest little piano on which he composed some of his most famous works, and the mystery of where it is now. I also really enjoyed learning more about how pianos evolved over the 19th and 20th century. I just couldn't put the book down!

It's mainly a very entertaining review of Wanda Landowsky-her life as a musician.

I appreciated the historical significance of Wanda Landowska to this story but would have appreciated a deeper analysis of Chopin's lover, George Sand, who propped him up while he composed 10 preludes on the piano, the focus of this book.

I am from Poland and Chopin is my most favorite composer of all time. When I saw this book it peaked my interest. Unfortunately this book does not deliver. It is tedious , dull and boring.

I bought this book for my brother-in-law shortly after my sister gave birth to a daughter. I thought it would be a fun “Hey, you have a daughter, this might be a good thing to start thinking about”-type gift. And so he didn’t feel totally alone while reading it, I bought myself a copy as well.Solnit is clearly a powerful mind and talented writer. Her prose is strong and forceful, and she writes with stirring— at times contagious—- conviction. The book’s most powerful essays (“Men Explain Things To Me” and “#YesAllWomen”) are intelligent, clear-sighted looks at a massive, difficult, dangerous topic. It’s saddens me to applaud Solnit for her courage in writing this, if only because that acknowledges the typical backlash against women who speak out against misogyny, but she IS courageous and that alone warrants commendation.The book starts out with a funny, almost playful anecdote about being mansplained to by a pompous idiot at a party in Aspen, but then quickly moves into darker waters. Solnit goes on to use politics, art, history and new media as springboards for discussing the interconnectedness of cultural misogyny and how mansplaining and rape can be viewed as existing on a continuum. Towards the end of the book she summarizes this nicely: “It’s a slippery slope. That’s why we need to address the slope, rather than compartmentalizing the varieties of misogyny and dealing with them separately.” (p. 134) It’s a new way of looking at an ancient problem, articulated in a way that I don’t think I’ve heard before, and Solnit rounds out her case by anticipating counter arguments (i.e. men being falsely imprisoned for rape) and responding to them to the degree that they deserve.So here’s the part where I complain: While her arguments are culturally important and her writing is strong, Solnit’s rhetoric seems, at times, deliberately hyperbolic and meant to divide readers. On pg. 57 she describes the case of Ariel Castro, a man accused of imprisoning, torturing and sexually abusing three women as being “a vicious version of the traditional [marriage] arrangement.” Later on in the book (p. 153) she takes a similar swipe at capitalism: “There’s more that we need to be liberated from… a system that serves environmental destruction and limitless consumption…” And beyond that there’s a general celebration of revolution, (non-violent) anarchy, as well as Solnit’s insistence that this is, indeed, “a war.” In other words, if you’re traditional / conservative / old-fashioned, then chances are you’re probably going to feel pretty alienated while reading this, if not all out attacked. I don’t consider myself conservative, but there were still times when I felt myself getting defensive. With that said, I was less annoyed with this on ideological terms than I was by what felt like a tactical mis-step. Simply put: This is a wise book. This is an important book. A lot of people should be reading it and absorbing it's message. And I could suddenly feel thousands of readers— good people who’s minds are ready to be expanded— fleeing from it’s very positive message, because they were being lumped in with rapists and murderers. I was frustrated because I felt like the book was preaching to the choir and, in-so-doing, entrenching conservatives deeper into their current belief systems.One could argue that this book isn't intended to convert and so it's unfair to judge it by those standards; that it’s a celebration and reminder of what’s already been accomplished in the fight for gender equality, and that now it’s up to someone else to write the gentler, more palatable book that eases The Other Side into progressive thinking. And you know what— that may very well be the case. In the meantime, I encourage conservative thinkers who are interested in reading this to do so with an open mind instead of just looking for things to disagree with. Because the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of what’s discussed in this book really has nothing to do with superficial left / right politics and everything to do with how we want our nieces/daughters to be treated as they grow up in the world. And that feels like something we can all agree on.

Written to the point and to the heart of the matter. Don't explain things to me that I understand better than you and don't tell me to smile. These seem like small things, but follow the thread. They are significant parts of a much larger picture. I have said these words for YEARS and it's nice to read someone else's thoughts that echo my own. Highly recommended reading for young women who weren't around when this fight began. Perspective is everything in finding our path forward.

I grew up in the 50's and so have lived through the last 60 years of the ongoing struggle for equality, equal rights and equal pay--and the every day ongoing struggle simply to be treated as a human being with free will. And, of course, beyond the equality issue, there's always the inherent danger involved simply because you are born female. I was continually warned and told what I could do, what I could wear and where I could go. I lived in a 3rd World country as an adolescent, and believe me, we young women paid attention to the advice to "dress like a lady" "don't go out after dark alone" "don't meet anyone's eyes" etc. etc. Being female, for much of my life, has been been like having, through no fault of my own, a target painted on my back. Long story short, this book connects a whole lot of dots, with a clear-eyed glance through history and from there into the realities of the present, where not much below the surface gloss has changed. Everyone with a HS or college age girl -- or boy, for that matter - should purchase a copy of this fierce, beautifully written, TRUE book and then preach on the text. In 149 pages, Ms. Solnit turns my gaze toward a better, more honest future in which both sexes can claim power and respect.

Brilliant book. It changed my perspective. It starts with an amusing story about mansplaining. Solnit then ties the dynamic behind mansplaining to a web of much more sinister problems including all angles of men exploiting women and nations exploiting each other. I then took three levels of Wilton cake decorating classes to learn and understand the basics cake decorating. I remember my grandmother and aunt making cakes and flowers with icing and was always so amazed. Now I could make them too! Maybe not as good as theirs, but it was a start. With time and practice I made progress as I made the cakes match the birthday or holiday theme using, Buttercream frosting, royal icing, and color flow....color flow became my favorite....but still I shied away from both Fondant and Gumpaste.I used to love making the 'perfect' themed cakes for my daughter when she was younger....then life throws things at you and it's not that the passion fades, but that the opportunity and life prevent it. It's been a while now, and it's by chance that I came across Yolanda's YouTube channel. I watched a few episodes and was excited to see all the wonderful cake creations she was making using Fondant (a medium to this day I have never tried).I found this book to be well organized, with lots of great detail, well-written and edited, and lots of appropriately supported images. I enjoyed the quick stories that went with each of the cakes as they were presented. I loved the three chapter buildup from easy to medium to most difficult of cakes to create. The tools and supplies section, as well as conversion for recipes, were easy to locate and follow.I no longer consider myself a beginner, but it has been a while so I'm out of practice. In addition I have always feared trying to work with Fondant or gumpaste, which is why I decided to purchase this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in doing a themed or artistically modeled cake.

Yolanda’s book is my new favorite book. She took the time to explain every step from baking to decorating. The vanilla and chocolate cake recipes produce very moist and delicious results! Buy this book; you will not regret it!

I was so excited to get this book. I haven't been a fan for long but when I stumbled upon Yolanda and HTCI I immediately feel in love and became inspired.My husband and I cleared our evening so we test out the ultimate chocolate cake recipe and the Italian meringue buttercream. The cake was so moist and delicious and was so easy to make. I was terrified of the sugar syrup for the meringue but the book laid it out so easily and the instructions were simple enough that my half batch turned out perfect. I've never had such wonderful buttercream before!I'm looking forward digging into the rest of the recipes. Thank you so much Yolanda for such a wonderful book and for being so fun and inspiring!!

I purchased this book for my 16 year old, who has me addicted to watching HtCI every week on YouTube. (Yolanda is almost as OCD as I am). The recipes are easy to follow for beginners and makes bakers to cake enthusiast step up to the challenge. Thanks for putting your love of cake making into a book. My daughter teared when she received the book. Looking forward to HtCI crew making another book signing event in NYC.

This is an excellent book for both ideas and instructions. The pictures show extremely clean work with sharp edges. The recipes are pretty good too. The one thing to note however is that the projects are extremely fondant heavy. The pros to that is that it is easier to create beautiful, clean pieces with sharp edges but the con is no one enjoys eating fondant. I do prefer decorations that people enjoy eating. Other mediums do tend to be harder to work with and harder to create these pretty pieces, especially for the amature home cook.

I adore Yolanda's How to Cake It YouTube channel. I pre-ordered the minute I watched her video announcing the release of a cookbook. I am so pleased with the book. The designs are amazing yet approachable. It is really unique how each recipe is broken down in time steps, so you know what to get done when on the most complicated cakes. The images are beautiful and the cakes are unreal. I can't decide if I like the caramel apple cake or the watermelon cake (Walter!) the best.I recently used the chocolate cake recipe in the book and it was the best I've ever had. I made a cake with candy in the layers like the one Yo made on her YouTube channel.

It's a cake book by Yolanda Gampp - how could you go wrong. The descriptions and pictures are wonderful and I love how she breaks it down into sections so you can say hey, I am a beginning cake maker, would this one be a good choice for me to try, Plus she is awesome and I think she makes some of the most beautiful cakes I have ever seen,

I love following How to Cake it online and was excited to order the cookbook, but it was really lacking for me. I expected a lot of fun cake recipes but there was only a few pages of actual recipe and the rest was just cake decorating pages. Which is all fine and dandy, but I can also get the information from watching the youtube videos. I bought this mainly to get recipes and the ones in there I can also get from her blog, which I appreciate that she shares them openly, but if you are going to sell a cake cookbook it would be nice to have more than 4 cake recipes in it. Just my personal opinion. The quality of the book was fine, the few people who said their pages fell out must have gotten a bag batch cause it was a nice hardcover book with good printing. Just wish the content was different and more of a cookbook than a tutorial book. So perhaps my mistake for assuming it was a recipe book.

Disclaimer, I live in Sedona & know the author, Debra Beck.I wanted to read this book as a friend of the author and as the Mother & step Mother of several now adult girls! I thought that this book really addresses the many issues facing teen girls & gives teen girls great information and tools to navigate through the difficult teen years, empowering them all the way.I was kind of blown away reading the book, as there were several sections that opened up my eyes & helped me learn about myself! A great read for any parents of teen girls & for Adult women to read for the 'teen girl within!" Great job Debra! Well done!

Debra Beck does a great job teaching young girls how to love themselves. It is not that empty, shallow and selfish love but the true love based on confidence and hard work.This book talks about important topics that many books dealt with like drugs, sex and eating disorders, as well as, refreshing topics that I enjoyed having introduced to my daughter such as finishing projects, stress reduction and health maintenance and how they are related to confidence and self appreciation. Ms. Beck also provided short journals that help young girls search and understand themselves; well done!

A nice guide for adolescenses who are strugling in this wonderfulbul confusing world. I have given this book to several of my students and they have enjoyed it and learned how to be better.

There are many examples in this book which would have helped me out immensly when I was young. In particular, not doing something when you are uncomfortable about it. Also, the fact that everyone is unique and we should celebrate our differences, not try to be like some else so they may like us. Kudos to Debra!
