The Transparent Society (Parallax: Re-visions of Culture and Society), by Gianni Vattimo

Review

In a mere 100 pages Vattimo has managaed to tell a compelling story about how other stories about postmodernity themselves are told and retold, often in the absence of sympathetic ears. Compared to most critics writing about the subject matter, Vattimo is sophisticated and optimistic, and his story is one of hope. (Briankle G. Chang Journal of Communication)David Webb's graceful and reliable translation of Vattimo's 1989 La societá transparente (augmentented by three new chapters) makes available in English a significant account of postmodernity. (Ronald Bogue Comparative Literature Studies)This book is of major importance to the debate on the postmodern question. (Jean François Lyotard)This is Vattimo at his best―and at his best he is very, very good, which is to say, erudite, witty, engaging, and precise. (Hayden White)

Gianteresio [“Gianni”] Vattimo (born 1936) is an Italian philosopher (who taught at the University of Turin, and elsewhere) and a member of the European Parliament; he is also openly gay. His many books include The End of Modernity: Nihilism and Hermeneutics in Postmodern Culture,Of Reality: The Purposes of Philosophy,A Farewell to Truth,After Christianity, etc.He wrote in the first chapter of this 1989 book, “Much is said about postmodernity nowadays. So much, in fact, that it has become almost obligatory to distance oneself from the notion … It is my belief, however, that the term ‘postmodern’ has a meaning, and that this meaning is linked to the fact that the society in which we live is a society of generalized communication. It is the society of mass media. In the first place, we speak of the postmodern because we feel that, in some essential way, modernity is over… Broadly speaking, this eulogy to being modern is what, in my view, characterizes the whole of modern culture… According to the hypothesis I am putting forward, modernity ends when---for a number of reasons---it no longer seems possible to regard history as unilinear. Such a view requires the existence of a centre around which events are gathered and ordered.” (Pg. 1-2)He continues, “Along with the end of colonialism and imperialism, another decisive factor in both the dissolution of the idea of history and of the end of modernity is the advent of the society of communication. Here I come to my second point, which concerns the ‘transparent society.’ It will not have gone unnoticed that the expression ‘transparent society’ has been introduced here with a question mark. What I am proposing is: (a) that the mass media play a decisive role in the birth of a postmodern society; (b) that they do not make this postmodern society more ‘transparent,’ but more complex, even chaotic; and finally (c) that it is in precisely this relative ‘chaos’ that our hopes for emancipation lie.” (Pg. 4)He suggests, “The self-transparency to which we are at present being led by the ensemble of media and sciences seems to be nothing more than the exposure of pluralism, of the mechanisms and inner fabric of our culture. Even at its best, the media-human sciences complex is emancipatory only inasmuch as it places us in a world less univocal, less certain and so also much less reassuring than that of myth. It is the world for which Nietzsche invented the figure of the Übermensch, the overman, a new human subject to which philosophy responds by way of what may now justifiably be called the hermeneutical turn.” (Pg. 26-27)He observes, “Ultimately, the theory of limited rationality, that is, the general idea that myth as knowledge in narrative form is a type of thought adequate to certain fields of experience (mass culture, interior life, historiography), also lays aside the problem of defining its own historical situation. It is unaware of its foundation on a tacit acceptance of the distinction between [Nature and the Humanities]; and this distinction has become increasingly problematic with the recognition that exact science is itself a social enterprise, and that the objectifying methods of the natural sciences are themselves, therefore, set entirely within the field of the socio-historical sciences.” (Pg. 38-39)He asserts, “When history became, or tended towards, universal history---as the excluded, mute and repressed found their voices---it became impossible to think of it as genuinely universal, as unilinear and directed ultimately towards emancipation. Even from an aesthetic perspective, utopia implied a framework of universal history as unilinear. Yet utopia has disappeared, even from aesthetics, with the advent of a certain ‘universality’ in the channels different models of value and recognition have found to express themselves. As regards aesthetic experience and its relation to everyday life, art has not simply ‘retreated’ to its place within the modern canon. In addition, a modern aesthetic experience has taken shape in the combined voices raised by communitarian systems of recognition and communities that show, express and recognize themselves in different myths and formal models.” (Pg. 67-68)After discussing a variety of philosophers (e.g., Gadamer, Apel, Habermas), he observes, “from the point of view of hermeneutics, these positions propose, at least implicitly, the restoration of metaphysics. This is not solely, or not so much, because the subject whose transparency is to be promoted … is modelled on the subject of metaphysics and modern scientism, whose ultimate form is that of full self-consciousness. Above all, it is because the normative ideal of unrestricted communication displays its categorical character in its recognition of an essential structure, holding for every historical experience, but itself withdrawn from becoming.” (Pg. 109-110)He concludes, “To the extent that hermeneutics recognizes itself as provenance and destiny, as the thought of the final epoch of metaphysics and thus of nihilism, it can find in ‘negativity,’ in dissolution as the ‘destiny of Being,’ given not as presence of the ‘arche’ but only as provenance, the orienting principle that enables it to realize its own original inclination for ethics whilst neither restoring metaphysics nor surrendering to the futility of a relativistic philosophy of culture.” (Pg. 119)Those interested in non-analytic contemporary philosophy (e.g., Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard, Lyotard) will find much to appreciate in this book.

I fully endorse the existing feedback "This book is a Clear and Straight forward guide for this exam with good and simple examples to try out." and this is true for all the study guides written by Matthew M Morris.

Concise and to the point book about the new features of Oracle 12c. The book can also be used to refresh your Oracle 11g new features knowledge and overall daily DBA tasks. Comparatively, few new features were added in 12c compared to the pervious Oracle editions. As I have shifted to SQL Server DBA jobs in the past 3 years, this book helped me to refresh the new features of Oracle 11g material which I went through to prepare for Oracle 11g OCP upgrade exam. Thanks Matthew.

This is not a good book for exam preparation. Not recommend.

I read it to the half so far and enjoyed the information and details as a study guide, it does not contain all details you need from every asect or new feature but it points you on the right direction. Overall I liked it exactly as the name says, a study guide to give an overall of the new features and in some of them it gets deeper, and on the others it only gives a breaf explanation. I recommend as a complement, but you should look for more sources and practice to pass the exam I suppose.

The sections on Core DBA definitely prepares you for the exam questions, as the questions for that section can be from a wide range of information.

What can I say? Concise and to the point.

I highly recommend this book.I upgraded my OCP (certificate) to 12c by reading this book. Several years ago, I upgraded my OCP to 11g by reading the corresponding book ("Study Guide for 1Z0-050" by the same author). Why have I continued coming back to buy this series of books? Because they are short and sweet. Well, not exactly SHORT, but this book is less than half size of other books with the similar title. Admittedly we are all too busy nowadays, and there are too many other more interesting things to do in our lives than studying for certification. My goal is to spend less efforts to get more results. If it's your goal too, this book is for you.I would say this book contains about 85% of the answers for test questions in a systematic way. Of course it's not enough to just depend on this book alone (or any other ONE book alone). You need to cross reference Oracle documents, Google related info, experiment in your database, practice test simulator, and so on. But I found myself spent more time on this book than any other resources. From my experience, this book has one of the highest ROI (Return Of Investment) -- in terms of my time (not to mention the money).

This book is an excellent guide to prepare for 12c ocp upgrade certification exam .however it cover only 12c upgrade portion only and one need to refer to other book for general DBA part preparation

China: A History, by John Keay

Review

"Exquisitely written.... In fluid, effortless prose, Keay moves energetically through the vicissitudes of China's dynastic past."―Guardian (UK)"Absorbingly readable.... A pleasingly cultured account of the great sweep of China's evolution."―Independent (UK)"Here, at roughly 130 pages per millennium, is China's history from the earliest fragments of Xia dynasty to the last emperor, with a little of Chairman Mao added for good (or bad) luck. Its core, though, covers the 'big five' dynasties--Han, Tang, Song, Ming and Qing--from 200 BC to the start of the twentieth century, and Keay's choice is deliberate. There is no understanding China present or future without a sense of its past. Much of that past, by any standard, is awe-inspiring."―Observer (UK)"Without sacrificing substance for brevity, Keay manages to illustrate China's history very much as a narrative of the rise and fall of strong and feeble emperors, bureaucratic cliques and factionalism, the development of philosophical traditions and religious incarnations, and the constant restructuring of the empire's geographical boundaries. Readers already interested in, or wishing newly to embark upon, Chinese history will adore this book. Highly recommended."―Library Journal"John Keay has written...with unflagging zest, clear, accessible prose, and a refreshingly panoramic perspective." ―Open Letters Monthly

Wow, I love this book, but I definitely recommend getting it in paperback or Hardcover. Though this is an overwhelming subject, Keay has shaped the narrative in such a way that a new student to China has a foothold and the stories are amazing, The maps are important to see to connect this complex country, and I didn't realize that there were photographs to underscore the detail until I ordered a used copy to support my Kindle copy. There just are books that should not be read on the Kindle.

The history of China is complex. John Keay gives an overview of China and its rich history starting from before the country was unified under the Qin and up until modern times excluding the Communist party from the second half of the 20th century. There is of course a lot to try to convey in this 3000 year period but the author does well to give the reader an overview of both the history and evolution that China has witnessed. Having grown up with an absence of books on China's entire history this is a good addition to the literature for a wide audience. The author begins with some of the earliest records of China starting before 1000 BC but quickly gets into the period of warring states and the unification and beginning of the Qin dynasty. The author gives all the background needed to understand how later conflicts reference back to the early conflicts faced in China. The author gives the reader a brief picture of the world Confucius lived in and the philosophy he created that was probably the strongest current in Chinese government through its history. The book details the dynasties and the philosophies that drove each age. It also discusses how dynastic transitions were described by Chinese historians as the legitimate passing of the mandate of heaven on as rulers failed in their duties. The author gives an overview of all the major dynasties and in particular he focuses on the Han dynasty which is often seen as the golden age where borders were expanded and leadership was just. He focuses on the Tang dynasty where China resurfaced as a unified power and the Song where China was last ruled by its own people before being over run by a series of outside powers. One reads a history where China has not been unified throughout its history and fragmentation of the empire has been distinct in multiple periods. One learns of how China had frequent dynastic turnover as emperors were invaded and lost the faith of the people only for the cycle to repeat itself. One of course learns of the Mongolian invasion and their Yuan dynasty as well as the peasant uprising that led to the Ming dynasty. It is fascinating to learn about how the mandate of heaven was transferred to a peasant in more than one occasion when the broad population was discontent with the ruler of the times. The relative decline of China is described in the last 500 years as it went from most properous and populous to exploited as industrialization took place in the west and gun boat diplomacy defined trade relations. This happened in particular with the Manchu's as they conquered the Ming in the 17th century. From there one sees a sequence of bullying trade deals and incremental isolation of China. The author spends time discussing the opium wars and the nationalist movement in China with Sun Yat-Sen and leaves us at the end of the second world war.China: A History gives a relatively quick overview of the major dynasties in China and its early modern history. Multiple more volumes could no doubt be written but this is a good starting point to get a sense of how China has evolved and where its civilization started. The archaeological record continues to broaden as its academic world opens up. This book gives you exactly what the title says, a History of China. The writing is clear and the content is interesting, worth the read.

This is the finest history of China I have read. Much better than Spence or Fairbank. It manages to capture the flavor and nuance of of each dynasty as well as the economic and social changes. The writing is clear and often gripping. Of course, even at 500 pages, it is only an overview of the 5,000 years of Chinese History. The only comparison I can think of is "China Marches West" by Peter Perdue, but then he covers only the Qing Dynasty's and it conquest of Manchuria (part), Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet.

Keay's narrative on the history of China is certainly different than the conventional ones written on the subject. For the first few pages, one may find this refreshing and even entertaining. However, reading on, one soon discovers that Keay's own views are persistently found throughout. Keay spends much of the book to dwell on the non Han minorities. This is understandable since throughout Chinese history minorities play an important role, but the book should be more balanced for more descriptions on other areas of Chinese history such as the developments in art, culture, religion. Keay is an expert on Indian history; I suspect more so than on Chinese history, and perhaps that expertise caused him to write more on tribal cultures and influences. Furthermore, Keay's opinions on the characteristics of dynastic and monarchic rule continue to show up in the narration, which is first tiresome and then becomes annoying. Not recommended as a first book on the history of China. It is an interesting read for a different but opinionated perspective on the subject, probably for readers who already have basic knowledge of the subject.

This book is about many over looked women in the design fields. A few names were familiar but the majority of the names were new me even if I knew of their work. Each women has a short biography, samples of their work and a few photographs. The writing is good and I really enjoyed the photographs/illustrations. The author does a good job highlighting why these women deserve more recognition. Enjoy discovering these fascinating women

Rather interesting book on the women who have achieved great and beautiful thing in the art and design world. Some of the names come to mind easily, some not so, to someone who does not follow that field. I found their work and achievement outstanding and there stories of their journeys intriguing.

Walking with Henry: Big Lessons from a Little Donkey on Faith, Friendship, and Finding Your Path, by Rachel Anne Ridge

Review

Memoirist Ridge (Flash), adopts another donkey in her second memoir of finding path of joy, exasperation, faith, and love in an equine friend. Henderson Number Ten, or Henry, is a miniature rescue donkey who had signs of abuse when she received him from a donkey rescue facility as company for Flash, her first rescue donkey. Henry comes into the pasture with an attitude, staking out his territory and ignoring his penmates. At first, Ridge isn’t sure whether Flash and Henry will make friends, but she’s determined to do what she can. Her optimism grows as she takes daily walks with Henry, who insists on starting out by walking backward before turning himself around. With The Book of Common Prayer as a companion, Ridge records her own journey from grief to joy as she watches Henry recover and show his full personality. She takes readers through his adoption and recovery using tenets of the faith such as the Apostles Creed to prove that “no matter where our journey takes us, we never walk alone.” Ridge’s levity and deep faith will delight fans of her first memoir and round up new animal-loving readers, as well. Walking With Henry is a rapturous representation of what it means to wrestle with God & come up more assured of His goodness—sweat, tears & all. Rachel’s humble transparency in her memoir is a tranquil breath of God’s with-us-ness for anyone faced with the tension of deconstructing ideologies along their own faith walk—a vital reassurance for those who may be in the throes of holding constructs of belief up to the Light and letting Him melt the impurities away while holding fast to the Everlasting. That little donkey will capture your heart as he embodies big lessons, reminding us all that even when our questions are not answered according to our tenacious timetable, we are delighted in by our Heavenly Father. Our inquiries are not a threat to His sovereignty, sanctification is a slow, reverent work, and the One who leads is ever faithful.

Sometimes you just need a book that simply shows God’s love and grace in our daily lives and this book did exactly like that. I love how God can show his love for us as sinners through his creation including animals. The author does such a good job of telling the story of Flash and Henry the donkeys and how they taught her, her family, and so many others lessons of grace, humility, gratitude, and so much more. This book will truly warm your heart and soften it to God’s love for you and those around you.

This book felt like sitting down with a cup of coffee and a good friend who has "been there, done that". So many encouragements from a woman in transition in life and faith: kids raised, career changed, faith needing a recharge. A little donkey named Henry and some ancient faith traditions soothed my soul along with the author's."It's up to us to open our eyes to the ways God is present and the means through which He speaks. Maybe it will be through a donkey! Maybe it will be through spending time in His creation. Maybe it will be through the heartfelt advice we don't want to consider from a friend. Maybe it will be through His living, breathing Scripture - when we don't rush through it but pay attention to its message." (Rachel Ann Ridge)Maybe it will be through a book like this...

Where do I start? There are so many lessons in this book. Lessons about forgiveness, friendship, trust, vision, hope, grief, marriage, parenting and much more. "I have discovered that something is awakened through failure, tragedy, and disappointment. It is a place of learning and potential creativity. In such moments you can get lost in despair or denial, or you can recognize the failure and run toward the hope of something new." There are so many nuggets, I finally had to take out pen and paper to capture them. One of the nuggets that impacted me the most is turn around and trust who is leading you. Let's just say I am looking forward to the devotional from Walking with Henry. I said purchase several because you will be giving this book to lots of people. Rachel Ridge thank you.

I absolutely adored this book!! I immediately fell in love with Henry (the irresistible, backward-walking donkey) and was amazed by the way that the author honestly shared her heartbreaks/ life struggles in a way that points us to God and His goodness! I loved the prayers that she shared, and definitely want to incorporate them into my daily conversations with the Lord. I pre-ordered this book for two of my good friends who live on farms and love the Lord...I know that they will be blessed by the book just as much as I have been! I highly recommend this book; my spiritual life has been deeply impacted by the lessons that were shared.

Reading this book was like visiting an old friend you haven’t seen for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with Rachel and Flash and meeting the new member of the family, Henderson Number 10, better known as Henry. Henry will “back” himself into your life and heart as you read about his antics and the lessons he had for Rachel. We all have our times of crisis of faith, and Rachel shares her story with heartfelt honesty and transparency. Who would ever think that a little rescue donkey could make such a profound impact on people’s lives. Walk along with Rachel and Henry and you may just find that your faith is inspired too.

Absolutely loved this book! Truly a great story of patience, perseverance, and acceptance - something the world could use more of! The author’s style of writing made me feel as if I were right beside her, witnessing the antics and interactions between Henry and others. I laughed out loud, chuckled quietly, & wiped a few tears as I read through the many stories and messages shared. Will be reading again for a more in-depth review of the lessons learned by the author.

If you liked "Flash the Donkey," you will adore "Walking with Henry." In this lovely book, Rachel Anne Ridge candidly tells her story of the tragedy, struggles and questions she's dealt with.Rachel and Tom thought Flash needed a companion donkey, so they (sort of) jumped on the opportunity to adopt a rescued miniature donkey. Rachel watched and learned from Flash, "Henry" (the new kid), and their slow-growing friendship. Somehow, as she slowed down and gave her own heart some breathing space, these poky-but-gentle creatures helped her see her doubts and questions in a new light. Meanwhile, she discovered guidance in other unexpected places, until her bruised faith kindled again into a warm flame. This is one of the most encouraging books I've read in a long time. No doubt Rachel's transparency and delightfully engaging voice get much of the credit.Tyndale, the publisher, sent me an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
