Or no, maybe potato chips... you know you'll be left with burned lips and an empty bag, but you just can't stop till they are gone! This first book in the series was absolutely my favorite but all of them were an entertaining romp around the picturesque village of Snupperton-Mumsley. I really hope the series continues, with perhaps a bit more gothic ambience, some historic churches or graveyard scenes but really, I just want more books. *I must admit I was staunchly rooting for Simon to take up with the Inspector Robin, rather than Giles, but I've come around and accepted Giles as he matured* Any chance of a book five? As long as the author keeps writing these I would keep reading them. These books leave you craving for more!
I'm disappointed. The idea of a gay vampire detective had so much potential that I bought the book in spite of the disgusting cover art. It doesn't give much of the story away to tell that the vampire takes "little white pills" that allow him to skip sucking blood for nourishment, go outside in broad daylight, etc. but also negates all of his other vampire traits like having acute senses and being able to change shape. In other words, he isn't a vampire. He's still gay (no little white pill for that apparently) but he is a lot more like Miss Marple than Stephanie Plum. So, for the most part, it's just another cozy mystery set in a picturesque British village with the usual suspects and Miss Marple leering at the boys.
Dame Agatha would have been right at home in the quaint but cozy English village of Snupperton Mumsley, but I don't know how she would have reacted to the village's latest resident, Simon Kirby-Jones. You see he's a little different. He's an American, but not your typical "ugly" American. He's a delightful Southern gentleman and renowned historian and biographer, who actually earns his keep by secretly churning out historical romances as Daphne Deepwood and hard-boiled female P.I. adventures as Dorinda Darington.He's also gay, and to complicate matters even more, he just happens to be a vampire. Actually, he's far removed from the cliché "I vant to bite your neck" vampires of the typical horror film. It seems that medical science has finally discovered a cure for vampirism. It's a wonder drug that while it doesn't bring you back to life it does eliminate the rather unsavory aspects of being a vampire - the bloodsucking and becoming a crispy critter when exposed to sunlight. The only real drawback with the drug is the fact that drinking a cup of tea laced with garlic will usually prove fatal. And in this charming English village, that's a real possibility.That's because all the inhabitants of Snupperton Mumsley have guilty little secrets. So when the village snoop and postmistress reveals that she has a play for the village church restoration affair that will reveal all the hidden secrets of the villagers, it comes as no surprise when she is discovered murdered. That's when Simon decides to use his vampire capabilities and mystery writing skills to solve the murder. That is if the murderer doesn't discover his hidden little secret.Simon Kirby-Jones is a refreshing twist to the traditional English cozy, cup-of-tea murder mystery sleuth. Dean James has created a witty and totally original concept for a mystery series. I found it totally enjoyable, and since I do believe in vampires and things that go bump in the night I'm looking forward to Simon's next odyssey in Snupperton Mumsley.
This debut novel in a series known as "A Simon Kirby-Jones Mystery", was a delightful surprise to me. We have an expatriate, Simon, having just moved to a English village known as Snupperton Mumsley. Now Simon is a Southern Gentleman formerly from Mississippi. He brings the fact that he is an Historical biographical author whom dabbles in writing romances and mysteries under alias, however, he also just happens to be gay and a vampire with magic little pills.Put the above into a typical stylization of a "Merry Margaret Mead," and you have an up to date English cozy. The characters are humorous, full-bodied and each one has a past they would rather keep to themselves. The Village post-mistress wants to write a play disclosing these very interesting pasts.This book is Not a run of the mill British cozy though and I was laughing out loud throughout. I agreed with the Author about the victim. I found myself supporting causes and just delighted.Personally, I found myself pleased. I was pleased about the light hand given to the character of Simon. He could have been 'too much' instead his personality was just right. I look forward to furthering our acquaintance in volume two,
I remember this book being a lot less stereotypical when I originally read it, but sadly, time has clearly fogged my memory. The protagonist is rendered sexless and toothless to make him palatable to the kind of reader who regards homosexuals with suspicion, and the rest of the cast feel like little more than cardboard cutouts. I'd say the most interesting part is our protagonist's money making methods; his official work under his own name as a scholar, and the two pseudonyms that churn out pulp romances (and pay his bills).
About 11 years ago my father rented the second book of this series for me from the library and I ADORED it; I also completely lost the title, author, and all other pertinent info that would lead me to get my hands on this series again. Fast forward to now: I was looking for another mystery series while in the bookstore when I was struck by a memory of a gay vampire detective (of sorts) and now here I am! Finally found S. Kirby-Jones again and I still love it!(4/5 because the killer was predictable despite the fun story).
