Daniel Simon is an internationally acclaimed designer and trailblazing virtual image creator. He worked for hyper car maker Bugatti and collaborated with Formula 1, Puma and Lotus. Simon is author of the best-selling book 'Cosmic Motors', a collection of spectacular science-fiction vehicles, and the 2013 book series 'The Timeless Racer'. Since 2008 Simon has worked with famed directors to create vehicles for Hollywood blockbusters such as Tron: Legacy, Captain America, Prometheus, and the upcoming Oblivion. This book was first introduced to me by my best friend Score, Who is an Art Director at a huge corp..I was blown away by the beauty of the Digital Art and the Very Imaginative Compositions. Some of the renderings are Just gorgeous.I've read some of the criticism about this book, Which I must say has a lot to do with envy than the quality of the work in this book, "I'd like to see them do better". Being a Traditional artist myself,I understand that compared to The Masters of Paint, Brush and Canvass, That create realisim and beauty manually, The Digital art can appear "fake" to some, But to consider the fact that one must instill into the computer all the physics needed to create an image the way the masters do manually can justify Digital as its own beautiful style of Art. Whether Paintbrush, Airbrush or Computer, The fact remains that the Artist's ability to compose a beautiful image from his or her minds eye regardless of the tools he or she uses, is what matters. This book verifies that. I just had to purchase this book to add to my collection.It is now next to my collection of Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta, to name a few.This Is One Beautiful Book!
Cosmic Motors offers a new perspective on futuristic racing machines by blending the form factors of things like WWII bombers and F1 racers with Simon's creativity to bring you some of the slickest vehicles around. Daniel Simon also provides a context for his vehicles with dashes of story throughout the book. The book contains several pages of tightly rendered sepia sketches as well as many extremely crisp 3D renderings that show off some seriously insane attention to detail. A lot of the 3D renders contain composited pilots or sexy babes posing by the vehicles to show off scale and maybe a little leg.Overall the book is a nice addition to any concept-book lover's library. I only have two little complaints about this book: 1. I wish there were more loose sketches to paw through and 2. sometimes the composited pilots are so "earth-like" that they contrast oddly against the futuristic vehicles from another galaxy, but that contrast may have been intended.
Fantastic and creative design, sketches, drawings and renderings. Not only drawings, but the book itself designed with a great taste, graphic design and compositions. This book is piece of art. It is a great addition to the car designer’s library or anyone who likes car design, design in general or automotive art.Very nice publication by Design Studio Press, excellent high quality prints on heavy paper.Impatiently waiting the release of new Daniel Simon’s book “The Timeless Racer: Machines of a Time Traveling Speed Junkie.
I've been wanting a long time to buy Cosmic Motors, and it does not disappoint. It's a sweet design/art book jam packed with sweet sketches and even more amazing renderings. Though it's got a few more, uh, cheesecake images than I normally buy, the combo of photo-real renderings (Alias Studio Tools natch) and the real life models is absolutely amazing. Each different ship has a series of sketches and process images, along with several sweet full color renderings complete with pilots, mechanics and other people and props. This is an amazing book
7 years into pursuing my craft I generally don't buy books by other artists. It's mainly so that my work won't be influenced by anyone else, but when I came across Daniel Simon's work and website, my jaw dropped. Yep, anyone can be an automotive designer, but Daniel does it with style and attitude. This is one of those books that you don't want to end. It doesn't really have any wire or clay renders, but then would you want your work to look like someone else's? His work is tight. This is not a "How-to" book, but more like a "This is my stuff..." And I'm fine with that. It's transportation design at it's extreme. I hope we see a part 2. Great job Daniel.
There is one major thing missing from this book.Every page is beautifully laid out... the images are perfectly composed with lighting and detail that will astound.The author is a world class illustrator, but what is missing are the nuances of functional design. The designs themselves are striving to be unique from the work of other concept artists, but sadly are not unique from themselves in a collection that feels somewhat repetitive. The designs feel almost arbitrary, lacking the functional appeal that is necessary for hardware illustration. Sorayama, McQuarrie, McCall, Johnston, Mead even Berkey seem to have attained the critical mass of functional feel that is lacking from the stunning illustrations in Cosmic Motors. The shapes seem without purpose of any kind, and for me, fail to inspire. While drawn to the beauty and skill of the composition, I am not drawn to the machines themselves.Hopefully the author will find the key to bringing a functional presence in future designs, developing the critical eye of an engineer or industrial designer.
awesome, worth having in your collection, daniel simons is a great designer. alot of the pieces in here are collaborations with other artist.I recommend it. I have it near by on my bookshelf of art books in the case you need inspiration.
