This is an essential book for aspiring school counselors or current school counselors looking to effectively reach their mentees. True caring is not something taught in textbooks on development or counseling techniques but rather used to be an intangible quality that is vital to the counselor role. Dr. Shapiro takes what I thought could not be taught and makes it tangible...caring. His love and dedication for the teaching and counseling vocations are shown throughout this book and challenges us to go way beyond the “numbers” that rule the education system and makes us see the whole person from the inside out. This book is an eye opener for school counselors and teachers alike.

I'm a youth basketball coach and mentor to many of colleagues in my profession. I found Dr. Shapiro's book to both validate many of my current actions and to bring to light other actions of which I had given little thought. While some people might know what to do in a mentoring relationship, those who understand that at the root of it all is a human-to-human relationship will be the people who make a real difference. Dr. Shapiro's engaging writing style made the book easy to read. I highly recommend this book as part of your personal and professional development.

This is a great book for teachers and counselors looking to enhance mentorship through caring. Dr. Shapiro is a strong writer with a wealth of knowledge and experience, which is evident throughout the book. Readers are introduced to five practices designed to integrate caring into mentorship.
