Review

“This expansive debut from Benson follows the lives of five women over two generations that interconnect in extraordinary circumstances… Benson’s depiction of motherhood across circumstances will please readers interested in stories about forging homes in other cultures.” —Publishers Weekly“The African backdrop gives an interesting spin to Benson’s exploration of themes related to motherhood, outsiderness, and emotional connection.”—Booklist“This novel transported me from my safe little house in Iowa to a place where lions and hyenas prowl, where blood soaks into the parched earth and where a seedling can consume a living tree and become its own hollow tree with space enough for a grown woman to crawl into. The book throbs with descriptions of the natural world that are so beautifully wrought that their thematic significance seems essential and, at some extra-sensory level, magical. And yet what's most exciting about this story is how, in the midst of so much beauty and wildness and violence—at the dark and quiet center of it, you might say—Benson illuminates human emotion and psychology with such accuracy that you are brought home again, almost dizzily, to your own recognizable heart. That is beautiful storytelling, and this is a beautiful novel.” —Tim Johnston, author of New York Times bestselling Descent"In her debut novel, Adrienne Benson masterfully braids the lives, desires, and fears of three memorable women. Their loneliness and longing, their bravery and resilience are illuminated—with empathy and honesty—against the vivid landscapes of Kenya and Liberia. This clear-eyed novel is both heartbreaking and hopeful." —Joanna Luloff, author of The Beach at Galle Road“This engrossing narrative offers the experience of engaging and empathizing with cultural differences deeper than unfamiliar customs. It can transport you to Kenya and present the doors of kinship.” —Mary Catherine Bateson, author of Composing a Life“Adrienne Benson’s characters are complicated people, damaged by circumstances past and present; her exploration of what it takes for their wounds to heal is aglow with empathy and insight.” —Suzi Wyss, author of The Civilized World“An enchanting and deeply moving story, The Brightest Sun is a lovely portrait of three women’s lives redolent with beautiful evocations of the African landscape and light. A page-turner of a tale and a stirring and finally redemptive story of mothers and daughters.” —Sara Mansfield Taber, author of Born Under an Assumed Name and Dusk on the Campo “The Brightest Sun dazzles. A riveting page-turner filled with wonder, grace, and joy. Adrienne Benson is a fantastic writer.” —Brando Skyhorse, author of The Madonnas of Echo Park and Take This Man: A Memoir

I read this book slowly over the course of 2 weekend afternoons. I wanted to read it quickly because I couldn't wait to see how the story progressed. I had to force myself to slow down to enjoy each sentence and paragraph so I could appreciate The Brightest Sun's writing, character development, and gorgeous descriptions of Africa. Though the 3 main characters are mothers, this book is a compelling read for all sons, daughters, siblings, and parents who have ever questioned the closeness they feel toward family - and who want to heal, grow, and love by doing so.

A beautiful and haunting story with such vivid imagery that it felt less like a novel I read and more like a recaptured memory. It was a fast read because I could't put it down. Get it, read it and share it with your best friend. I can’t recommend it enough!

I love a story involving another culture and country. I enjoyed the descriptions of Africa and the manyatta - the harshness and the beauties of each. I felt that this was such a terribly sad story - for every character and kept waiting for something to celebrate. Aida is such a lost soul and I really felt sorry for her inability to truly fit in anywhere. There are a few good things that happen but they seemed so overshadowed by all the bad things. Every character encounters death at some point and maybe that is truly what this book was meant to be about -how each individual deals with loss in their own way and none of us are immune to it.

I really enjoyed this book and have recommended it to other Kindle owners and bought it for a friend who still likes to carry around a book. If you read the intro to the book you have an idea of the plot which is what made me purchase it. I was interested in how the story told of the life of a couple of young women lived and adapted to a life in Africa and how they influenced each other. The characters were well written and interesting and I did find the story movng and would like to read more by the author.

A great character study though the characters are all emotionally fragile and sad. I usually prefer more uplifting books but this one kept my interest from the first page. And there was a glimmer of hope for them at the end. It is almost three different stories but they do intertwine and you feel like you know each character well. Very descriptive writing!

Intriguing book—I loved learning about the Maasai & how they live. The story was captivating! I recommended it to my husband, who usually doesn’t read fiction, & he’s enjoying it as well!

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about other countries and cultures. The plot includes large animal welfare, local tribe cultures and traditions, and family's struggle to adjust to life in foreign countries.

What a great journey through the generations of these families. It makes the journey to the past & present to let the reader understand how personal experiences with family members & situational attachments to a culture are powerful markers of who we are. This is a wonderful book.
