About the Author
Mary Lou Connolly, a registered nurse with over thirty years of health care experience, has authored many articles for publication in nursing and home health care journals. She has appeared on the series Frontline in a story about health insurance coverage, and she has testified before a congressional committee about the positive effects of home health care. She routinely speaks to professional audiences about health care issues, and she has spoken before a number of community groups about epilepsy. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County. None of the author's health care experiences or professional achievements prepared her to be the mother of a child with a serious chronic illness. It was, she notes, a "learn as you go" experience. She has shared her story because of a desire to increase public awareness and understanding about living with epilepsy. Mary Lou lives with her husband Barry and children Meaghan and Michael, in Del Mar, California.

Nothing is more impacting to Michael than his mother's will to endure and overcome this disruptive adversity.Through his years, Michael encounters various forms of seizures. Connolly's descriptions are well stated, informative, and current in terminology. Her depictions of side effects due to anti-seizure medications will be helpful information to any family of an epileptic. The importance of doctor-patient relationships is explored and detailed as we see Michael grow up in one area with medical assistance also in family friends.One of the highest reference points in this story is the family bonding over Michael's turmoils with epilepsy. Social aspects are covered through school issues and extended family circles. Through all, the courage to persevere is central and character is born.Finally, as a reviewer and author who deals with seizures myself, I applaud Ms. Connolly for her candid portrait of her family life with Michael. Revealing the ongoing stigma such as her battle with school authorities will certainly help break the mold incorrectly cast by uneducated authorities. A wonderfully written book about a mother's love and devotion to her son as well as a fierce determination to provide her son and family with as much 'normalcy' in life as possible despite a very challenging medical condition. I laughed, I cried... I fell in love with Michael and his family.
This is a great book to help in the understanding of epilepsy in the life of a family. Michael and his family show what they have been through.

This book was excellent. I have epilepsy myself and when I read it, it brought back memories of what happend to me when I was younger. I applaud the parents for showing the support they did for their children!
This book made me feel not so "alone" as I struggle with my own daughters epilepsy which cannot be controlled. I read it and sobbed as I felt like it was my own story. I related so much that I wish that I could sit and have coffee with the author, as I feel like I have so much in common with her. If you have a child suffering with intractible seizures.....this is a must read! I felt better knowing that I am not the only Mom feeling these things and having the same concerns and worries for my daughters future. This is actually the second time that I have purchased this book, as I gave my first copy to a friend whom has a daughter that was just diagnosed. I quickly had to order another copy. There are certain chapters that I have read over and over as the authors attitude is so great and it reminds me that tomorrow is a new day.
Last night, I sat down and read Missing Michael. The book did not leave my hands until I read the last page. For those that were a part of the Mary Lou and Michael's village, this book is a testament that it takes a lot of people to be a safety net for those that we love and respect. I applaud Mary Lou, Michael,Meaghan and Barry for not shutting out the village. For allowing those near and afar to help when and where needed. For taking the chance to allow others see the vulnerablity, yet the dignity that Micheal possessed (even when He did not always realize it). For me, the best part of the book shares that there are people within our village that do understand and care outnumber by far those that don't. This sharing is a primer to those who are friends, family, co-workers, and care professionals of those with Seizure Disorders. Mary Lou thank you - I have a better understanding because of your words.I look forward to the sequel where we get to see what Michael's mark on this world is realized.
Missing Michael is written through the eyes of a loving mother whose family absolutely refuses to give up in its dedication to help a family loved one who struggles with epilepsy. It is both heart-warming and inspirational and will undoubtedly help others understand the importance of never giving up no matter what the challenge. As a person who struggled with epilepsy for more than three decades before the disorder was removed from my life through surgery Dec. 6, 1994 at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., the book helped me understand even more the importance of my family being at my side for so many years both before and after my surgery. It is a book that is very difficult to put down once you've started reading it and drives home the importance of holding together the family structure at all times. The Connolly family should be lauded for its undying effort to help Michael and Mary Lou Connolly deserves a big pat on the back for a wonderfully-written book.
